We investigated site fidelity and apparent survival in a promiscuous population of Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrows (Ammodramus caudacutus) in southern Rhode Island. Based on capture–recapture histories of 446 color-banded sparrows studied from 1993 to 1998 at our primary study site, Galilee, we observed significant variation in apparent survival rates among years, but not between sexes. Return rates of adult males (37.6%) and females (35.6%) were not significantly different during any year. Juveniles exhibited high return rates, ranging from 0 to 44%, with males (61% of returns) more likely to return than females (35%). In addition, we monitored movements of …

Michigan Journal of International Law

This article examines the extent to which international law has and will potentially influence the direction of the reform and implementation of adoption disclosure norms. Though it does not yet appear that international law mandates recognition of an absolute right to identifying information when such disclosure is opposed by a birth parent or adoptee, examination of these conventions and the response of the international community underscores the critical importance of identifying information to many adoptees, and a growing movement to afford primacy to their interests.

Ethnic Differences In Risk From Mercury Among Savannah River Fishermen, Joanna Burger, Karen F. Gaines, Michael Gochfeld

Fishing plays an important role in people's lives and contaminant levels in fish are a public health concern. Many states have issued consumption advisories; South Carolina and Georgia have issued them for the Savannah River based on mercury and radionuclide levels. This study examined ethnic differences in risk from mercury exposure among people consuming fish from the Savannah River, based on site-specific consumption patterns and analysis of mercury in fish. Among fish, there were significant interspecies differences in mercury levels, and there were ethnic differences in consumption patterns. The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand, is a major threat to hemlocks in the eastern United States. As part of efforts to control this pest, Scymnus (Neopullus) sinuanodulus Yu et Yao, a potential predator, was collected from hemlocks in Yunnan, China. Three shipments were imported during 1996 and 1997 to a quarantine laboratory to study the beetle’s biology. Beetles began oviposition immediately after transferal from 5°C in the spring, ceased oviposition by June, and laid the same number of eggs, whether egg laying began in February or in April. Two-year-old beetles laid as many eggs per year …

Closed shell bonding can be described by a theory that relates the manner that atoms fill their outer shells to algebraic formulas. Equations can be derived that are capable of deciding whether a given electron configuration gives a closed shell electron structure or not. A combinatorial analysis can be used to try every possible electron configuration for a given structure. The equations are then used to determine whether each structure gives a closed shell electron configuration. The goal of this capstone project was to develop the Cycle of Restoration curriculum and implement its contents as part of an action research based investigation that evaluates its effectiveness and usability. The design and implementation of the RON - Cycle of Restoration curriculum was completed as part of a cooperative internship with the Return of the Natives Restoration Education Project and the Bureau of Land Management. any marine organisms are highly dependent on the small-scale water current flows around reefs for many aspects of their physiological and biological processes. Because of these dependencies, many scientists are interested in studying these flows. Traditional means of measuring currents assumes water movement to be consistent over large areas and generally fails to describe patterns of flow with the high resolution needed to show movements over and around small reefs. Water movements, like many other physical attributes of the marine environment, are heterogeneous, changing dramatically over spatial and temporal scales. 8-Quinolinol-5-sulfonic acid was nearly devoid of antimicrobial activity, due to what was believed to be an unfavorable partition coefficient. Since twenty six 8-quinolinol-5- and 7 -sulfonic acids were available from our previous work, they were tested against six fungi. The 7 -chloro and 7 -bromo-5-sulfonic acids and the 5-chloro and 5-bromo-7 -sulfonic acids showed fungal inhibition within one order of magnitude of that of 8-quinolinol. It is suggested that a nonchelating mechanism is in part responsible for this fungitoxicity. Five additional 5-sulfonic acids with chlorine in positions 3-, 6-, 3,6-, 3,7-, and 6,7- that were suitable for studies in synergism …

3,5,6-, 3,5,7-, 4,5,7-, and 5,6,7-trichloro- and -tribromo-8-quinolinols as well as 3,5,6,7- tetrachloro- and -tetrabromo-8-quinolinols were prepared and tested against six fungi (Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Myrothecium verrucaria, Trichoderma viride, Mucor cirinelloides, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes) in Sabouraud dextrose broth. The compounds strongly inhibit five fungi but not M. cirinelloides. They are less active than the related dichloro-8-quinolinols which is attributed to steric hindrance
