Apoptosis Of Rat Myoblasts Is Induced In Vitro By Late, But Not Early, Wound Fluids, Raymond E. Sicard, Linh Nguyen, John Menezes

Interstitial fluids from late wound repair environments are not "regeneration permissive" as judged by their inability to promote either proliferation or differentiation of myoblasts in vitro. This irwestigation considered whether apoptosis (induced death) was an alternative fate for myoblasts exposed to these interstitial fluids. Myoblast fate was assessed by cell counts, tritiated thymidine release, and propidium iodide staining. Fluids from early wounds increased mean cell counts and induced little thymidine release or propidium iodide labeling. In contrast, fluids from late wounds reduced cell counts and induced both thymidine release and propidium iodide labeling. These data suggest that interstitial fluids from …

The identity, geographical distribution, and host range of codling moth is reviewed, and the evidence for sweet cherry being a host is critically analyzed. A model is described which assesses the risk of codling moth being spread through international trade in sweet cherries, as exemplified by exports from, respectively, New Zealand and USA to Japan in winter and summer. The model is based on the recorded incidence of codling moth in cherries and its estimated probability of survival during storage, transport to, and arrival in Japan, using data from specific studies and from wider knowledge of the phenology, life history, …

Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth is a program of surveys of young people conducted by ACER with funding from the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs. The surveys focus on the education and labour market experiences of groups of young Australians, beginning from their middle years of secondary schooling. Data collected include basic demographic variables, as well as information about educational and labour force participation extending over a number of years. Rapid Bioassessment Protocol (RBP) is a set of guidelines developed by the USEPA to standardize the practice of using qualitative survey techniques on aquatic organisms to gauge stream health. One component of RBP involves selecting a small section of a stream, known as a "representative reach", which is supposed to represent the conditions found over a larger area of the stream. This study was conducted to examine the variability between reaches in close proximity to each other, and to determine if that variability could be great enough to influence RBP results. The Great Plains Spittlebug, Lepyronia gibbosa (Homoptera: Cercopidae) is a state threatened specie in Michigan. The distribution, population size, host plant use, and basic biology details of this insect were determined in southwestern Michigan during the summer of2001. Juvenile populations and host-plant use data were obtained using standard transects. Adult populations were obtained by sweeping a 25-meter transect with a standard sweep net. Adult host plant use was determined by using a gas-powered vacuum to sample insects on individual plant species. The concept of learning and memory is a neurological process believed to reside in the nervous system of living organisms. In particular; the growth-associated protein, GAP-43, has been shown to alter its state of phosphorylation via a protein kinase C mediated reaction following long-term potentiation, a paradigm of learning and memory. Most recent studies of GAP-43 in goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) hve focused on its presence in regenerating or developing optic nerves. Schroeder argues that, for students, postmodern instability in literacy and meaning has become a question of the legitimacy of current discourse of education. Schroeder is committed, then, to constructing literacies jointly with students and by so doing to bringing students to engage more deeply with education and society. To accomplish this, of course, he must advocate rebalancing instruction to a more radically student-centered curriculum. This does not mean he abandons traditional discourse or traditional practice in the classroom; rather, tradition becomes only one voice among many in the classroom, instead of being the dominating one. The 1992 moratorium on fishing for Northern Cod marked a symbolic end to the way of life that had sustained Newfoundland's out ports for hundreds of years. It also marked the completion of an ecological regime shift, from an ocean ecosystem dominated by cod and other predatory ground fish, to one in which such fish are comparatively scarce, and lower-trophic-level invertebrates more common. We examine patterns of change seen in large-scale social indicators, which reflect the smaller-scale adaptations of individuals and communities during this ecological shift. Trends in population, migration, age, unemployment and dependency suggest declining conditions in rural Newfoundland …

Situated along a mountainous coastline between cold seas and continental ice, Greenland’s human populations face severe environmental constraints. Both individual and cultural survival have always depended upon flexible use of the available resources and, when these fail, relocation. The 20th century saw great transitions, notably from Danish colonial to Greenlandic Home Rule government; an almost fivefold increase in population (from 12,000 to 56,000); and from a seal-hunting subsistence economy to commercial fisheries in a new global marketplace. But throughout these transitions, the economy remained tied to renewable resources, and therefore could not transcend the underlying environmental constraints. Greenland’s 20th century …

Since sustainable forestry is a complex endeavor, paradoxes naturally exist in the certification criteria and indicators. There are different ways to establish the sustainability horizon and alternative harvest profiles that, although sustainable, may not meet specific criteria. The application of historic range of variation data and criteria must confront issues of time and spatial scales as well as how much human disturbance is natural. Defining “local” in the bioregional context is important for addressing socioeconomic criteria. The forester’s ability to deal with the self-contradictions in the criteria and indicators of sustainable forestry will improve with experience in the certification process.

Water quality is an important indicator of the health of an environmental system. Traditionally, water quality analysis has involved directly sampling areas in question. This method is difficult, if not impractical, to apply to large areas where data needs to be taken frequently. Remote sensing offers the possibility of covering a large spatial area with a high temporal frequency. It also provides a spatial distribution of the constituents which direct sampling cannot economically accomplish. Spatial distributions provide deeper insight into many of the hydrologic and biological processes that are directly affected by the concentrations of water constituents. The drawback of …

The UROtsa cell line was isolated from a primary culture of normal human urothelium through immortalization with a construct containing the SV40 large T antigen. It proliferates in serum-containing growth medium as a cell monolayer with little evidence of uroepithelial differentiation. The working hypothesis in the present study was that this cell line could be induced to differentiate and express known features of in situ urothelium if the original serum-containing growth medium was changed to a serum-free formulation. We demonstrated that the UROtsa cells could be successfully placed into a serum-free growth medium consisting of a 1:1 mixture of Dulbeco's …

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) may increase susceptibility of the host to pulmonary infection. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received a single dose of DEP (5 mg/kg), carbon black (CB, 5 mg/kg), or saline intratracheally. Three days later, the rats were inoculated intratracheally with approximately 5,000 Listeria monocytogenes and sacrificed at 3, 5, and 7 days postinfection, and we determined the number of viable Listeria in the left lobe of lungs. The remaining lungs underwent bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and the retrieved BAL cells were identified and counted. Luminol-dependent chemiluminescence, a measure of reactive …
