Wellness Curriculum In Relation To Eating Disorders, Lindzee Christina Perez

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to develop a handbook to assist secondary health teachers in providing a tool to develop healthy body image, through health promotion. Many health teachers are left with few resources to teach healthy body image. Through the review ofliterature, the writer presented the definition of healthy body image, the history behind eating disorders, the physiological/psychological effects of eating disorders, as well as the benefits of implementing a Healthy Body Image-Health Promotion handbook. This handbook should be a significant aid to secondary health teachers, and others who have an interest in helping adolescents understand eating disorders …

Emerging Fields Of Study, Lesley C. Graydon Jan 2001

Emerging Fields Of Study, Lesley C. Graydon

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

When I learned that CLAGS had secured an interdisciplinary program in Lesbian and Gay Studies and that the first course, An Introduction to Lesbian and Gay/Queer Studies, was to be offered in the Fall, I knew that I wanted to be in what I conceived as the first step in a much larger offering and celebration of critical ideas and counter-hegemonic discourse. I thought: finally, I won't be the only student reading and thinking from a radically left, feminist, lesbian, perspective - not that all of these four leanings must in any way accompany the position of lesbian, gay or …

Feeding Ecology Of The Blackwing Searobin Prionotus Rubio (Jordan, 1886) Over The Western Continental Shelf Off Alvarado, Veracruz, Mexico, Victor H. Cruz-Escalona, L. Andres Abítia-Cárdenas, Lucia Campos-Dávila, Felipe Galvan-Magaña

Gulf of Mexico Science

Seasonal changes of food habits of the blackwing searobin Prionotus rubio were studied over the continental shelf off Alvarado, Veracruz, Mexico, from Sept. 1994 to Aug. 1995. A total of 234 stomachs (182 with identifiable food) were analyzed. Brown shrimp Farfantopenaeus aztecus, blue crab Portunus spinicarpus, and rock shrimp Sicyonia dorsalis were the main dietary items. Low values of prey diversity and dietary breadth suggest the main prey were always relatively abundant over the western continental shelf of the Gulf of Mexico. We concluded the blackwing searobin is part of a trophic guild of demersal marine fish that …

Inland Fishes Of Mississippi, Stephen T. Ross Jan 2001

Inland Fishes Of Mississippi, Stephen T. Ross

Faculty Books

Mississippi has a diverse and fascinating inland fish fauna, yet no single, current reference provides information on identification, fishery importance, biology, and conservation status of the fishes. The pioneering book, Freshwater Fishes in Mississippi, by Fannye Cook (1959) has become outdated as much new information has accrued on the occurrence, systematics, distribution, life history, and ecology of the species. For instance, the known species diversity of native freshwater or diadromous fishes in Mississippi has increased by 41%, from 145 to 204.

My objectives in writing this book were to provide a comprehensive reference for the identification of fishes found …

Diet Composition Of Juvenile Pigfish, Orthopristis Chrysoptera (Perciformes: Haemulidae), From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Jeffrey C. Howe Jan 2001

Diet Composition Of Juvenile Pigfish, Orthopristis Chrysoptera (Perciformes: Haemulidae), From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Jeffrey C. Howe

Gulf of Mexico Science

Diets of 954 juvenile pigfish, Orthopristis chrysoptera, collected from 14 1-m3 concrete block artificial reefs approximately 20 km south of Mobile Bay, AL, were examined. A total of 137 specimens (14.4 %) contained food items and were used to perform stomach content analysis. Index of Relative Importance was used to evaluate the contribution of major foods by combining frequency of occurrence, volume, and number. Diets were dominated by shrimps and polychaetes and, to a much lesser extent, sea anemones, fishes, crustaceans, cephalopods, and gammarids. Many stomachs contained various quantities of sand, which indicated a certain amount of bottom …

Age Determination In The Sand Dollar Mellita Tenuis, Chih-Yi Tan, John M. Lawrence Jan 2001

Age Determination In The Sand Dollar Mellita Tenuis, Chih-Yi Tan, John M. Lawrence

Gulf of Mexico Science

Mellita tenuis were collected from six locations along the Florida gulf coast from March 1997 through Sep. 1998. The anterior-posterior length of the test was measured, and growth lines in the interambulacral plates near the ambitus on the aboral surface (which are oldest) were counted. The number of growth lines is size independent as would be expected if seasonality of growth and growth rate were uncoupled. However, a collection of small individuals had many more growth lines and one of the large individuals had many less than would be anticipated. Lines near the ambitus are difficult to count because they …

Distribution And Abundance Of Phytoplankton, Zooplankton, Ichthyoplankton, And Micronekton In The Deepwater Gulf Of Mexico, Douglas C. Biggs, Patrick H. Ressler Jan 2001

Distribution And Abundance Of Phytoplankton, Zooplankton, Ichthyoplankton, And Micronekton In The Deepwater Gulf Of Mexico, Douglas C. Biggs, Patrick H. Ressler

Gulf of Mexico Science

Expeditions in the 1960s and 1970s are the basis for the general paradigm that standing stocks and productivity of phytoplankton are both low ( <0.1 mg chl·m-3; <150 mg C.m-2·d-1) seaward of the shelf-slope break in the Gulf of Mexico. The present review supports this description of the mean (stable) state but also shows "hot spots" in primary production (>2 g C·m-2·d-1) occur when/where nutrient availability is locally enhanced seaward of the shelf-slope break. Recent collections with Bongo and MOCNESS nets, midwater trawls, and bioacoustic surveys of the Loop Current and associated cyclonic and anticyclonic …

Abundance, Spatial Distribution, And Mortality Of Young-Of-The-Year Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) Along The Gulf Coast Of Florida, Gary A. Nelson, Deborah Leffler Jan 2001

Abundance, Spatial Distribution, And Mortality Of Young-Of-The-Year Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) Along The Gulf Coast Of Florida, Gary A. Nelson, Deborah Leffler

Gulf of Mexico Science

We used fixed-station and random-station sampling data from the period 1989-97 to examine spatial and temporal patterns in the abundance and size structure of young-of-the-year (YOY) spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, in three Florida estuaries. YOY seatrout first appeared at shallow-water (<1.5 m) seine sites in May-June in Choctawhatchee Bay (Florida Panhandle) and in April-May in Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor (both along the southwest Florida peninsula). Spotted seatrout were caught at deepwater (> 1.6 m) trawl stations within 1-3 mo of their initial appearance at shallow-water sites. Most spotted seatrout were caught in waters <3.7 m. Spring and summer peal's in YOY abundance, corresponding to strong influxes of newly spawned individuals, were observed only in southwest peninsula estuaries. Depending on the estuary, the occurrence of YOY spotted seatrout at shallow-water sites was associated with some combination of seagrasses, mangroves, salinity, depth, temperature, and mud. Estimates of total instantaneous mortality rates for YOY spotted seatrout in Tampa Bay were 0.027·d-1 for fixed sites and to 0.025·d-1 for randomly selected sites.

Opportunistic Sampling At A Deep-Water Synthetic Drilling Fluid Discharge Site In The Gulf Of Mexico, Robert G. Fechhelm, Benny J. Gallaway, G. Fain Hubbard, Steve Maclean, Larry R. Martin Jan 2001

Opportunistic Sampling At A Deep-Water Synthetic Drilling Fluid Discharge Site In The Gulf Of Mexico, Robert G. Fechhelm, Benny J. Gallaway, G. Fain Hubbard, Steve Maclean, Larry R. Martin

Gulf of Mexico Science

Two opportunistic benthic surveys were conducted at an offshore semisubmersible oil drilling rig located in 565 m of water on the continental slope of the Gulf of Mexico to determine the extent of synthetic-based drilling fluid (Petrofree LE) concentrations in surrounding sediments and the composition of the associated macrofauna and megafauna communities. Sediment concentrations of Petrofree LE ranged from 89 to 198,320 μg/g in surficial sediments (0-2 cm) and from 4 to 85,821 mg/g in the 2-5 cm stratum. The highest Petrofree LE concentrations were located 50-75 m northeast of the discharge site, a phenomenon that may have been related …

Experimental Evaluation Of Potential Effects Of Habitat Size And Presence Of Conspecifics On Habitat Association By Young-Of-The-Year Red Snapper, H. Killabrew Bailey Iv, James H. Cowan Jr., Robert L. Shipp Jan 2001

Experimental Evaluation Of Potential Effects Of Habitat Size And Presence Of Conspecifics On Habitat Association By Young-Of-The-Year Red Snapper, H. Killabrew Bailey Iv, James H. Cowan Jr., Robert L. Shipp

Gulf of Mexico Science

The potential effects of habitat size and the presence of larger conspecifics on habitat association by young-of-the-year (YOY) red snapper Lutjanus campechanus was evaluated in 2.2 m3 laboratory tanks. Our results indicate that YOY red snapper have a strong affinity for structure, which ranged in these experiments from open-sand bottom to concrete-block, artificial reef-like habitats. Mean distance of YOY red snapper from the blocks decreased significantly and the time spent near the structures increased significantly as the size of the habitat increased. However, when larger subadult snapper were present, both distances to the reefs and time that YOY spent …

Physiography And Late Quaternary-Holocene Processes Of Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf Off Mississippi And Alabama, James V. Gardner, Peter Dartnell, Kenneth J. Sulak, Brian Calder, Laurent Hellequin Jan 2001

Physiography And Late Quaternary-Holocene Processes Of Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf Off Mississippi And Alabama, James V. Gardner, Peter Dartnell, Kenneth J. Sulak, Brian Calder, Laurent Hellequin

Gulf of Mexico Science

High-resolution multibeam mapping of the mid- and outer continental shelf and upper slope off Mississippi and Alabama reveals a complex bathymetry that reflects conditions during the last eustatic rise and the present high stand of sea level. The most prominent bathymetric features are pinnacles and hardgrounds that are scattered throughout the area. These features generally stand <10 m above the surrounding seafloor, cover large areas, and display a variety of morphologies. Almost all the reef pinnacles and hardgrounds have zones of high acoustic backscatter on their summits and on the seafloor immediately adjacent to their southwest walls. In addition, they also have erosional moats on the seafloor to the southwest. Large fields of bedforms are scattered throughout the mapped area. The asymmetries and orientations of the bedforms suggest that they were formed by excursions of the northeast-flowing Loop Current. In contrast, the pervasive ponding of sediment on the northeast sides of bathymetric highs indicates that one of the predominant directions of sediment transport has been to the south and southwest. The shelf break is a zone of numerous landslides of various sizes and complexities. The morphology of several landslide scars indicates that some of the failures occurred recently. One large reef-capped salt dome was mapped in the area, surrounded by a large field of pockmarks. Fields of pockmarks are also scattered on the shelf. The growth and demise of the reefs are related to the fluctuating transgression of eustatic sea level during the last deglaciation. Two episodes of reef drowning are correlated with the increased rates of sea-level rise during documented melt-water pulses; the first occurred from 14.8 to 14.2 ka and the second from 11.8 to 11.2 ka. Rates of sea-level rise exceeded the maximum growth rate of hermatypic corals only during these two intervals since the last glacial maximum and thus drowned the coral communities.
