Prediction Of Rice Texture From Starch Profiles Measured Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Hazel Fromm, J. F. Meullenet Jan 2001

Prediction Of Rice Texture From Starch Profiles Measured Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Hazel Fromm, J. F. Meullenet

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Starch determines a large proportion of the textural properties of cooked rice. The amylose: amylopectin ratio plays a significant role in the functionality of native starch. In this study a medium-grain rice cultivar, ‘Bengal’, was used for starch structure characterization using high performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC). This cultivar is characterized by having lower amylose content (15% to 20%) than long grain cultivars and being sticky when cooked, similar to short-grain cultivars. Rice samples were harvested in 1999 from five locations around Arkansas at state verification trials where cultural practices are closely monitored. Samples of this cultivar stored at a specified …

Atomically Resolved Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Intramolecular Junctions, Min Ouyang, Jin-Lin Huang, Chin Li Cheung, Charles M. Lieber

Barry Chin Li Cheung Publications

Intramolecular junctions in single-walled carbon nanotubes are potentially ideal structures for building robust, molecular-scale electronics but have only been studied theoretically at the atomic level. Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to determine the atomic structure and electronic properties of such junctions in single-walled nanotube samples. Metal-semiconductor junctions are found to exhibit an electronically sharp interface without localized junction states, whereas a more diffuse interface and low-energy states are found in metal-metal junctions. Tight-binding calculations for models based on observed atomic structures show good agreement with spectroscopy and provide insight into the topological defects forming intramolecular junctions. These studies have important …

Genetic And Biological Variation In Equine Infectious Anemia, Michael Belshan, Prasith Baccum, J. Lindsay Oaks, Brett A. Sponseller, Sean C. Murphy, James Cornette, Susan Carpenter

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Genetic and biological variation in the regulatory protein Rev of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) were examined throughout a clinically dynamic disease course of an experimentally infected pony. Following infection with the virulent EIAVWyo, the pony underwent a variable disease course, including an acute fever episode at 12 days postinfection (DPI), multiple recurrent fever episodes until 135 DPI, a prolonged subclinical period, and two late fever episodes. Viral RNA was isolated from the inoculum and sequential sera samples, and the rev exon 2/gp45 overlapping ORFs were amplified, cloned, and sequenced. Novel variants were found throughout infection, and genetic …

Encountering Amateurism: John Henry Wigmore And The Uses Of American Formalism, Annelise Riles Jan 2001

Encountering Amateurism: John Henry Wigmore And The Uses Of American Formalism, Annelise Riles

Public Law and Legal Theory Papers

This article explores the productive uses of amateurism in comparative law through a close reading of the life and work of John Henry Wigmore, the founder of the American tradition of comparative law who first came to the subject as a young missionary for the Langdellian style of American legal education in turn-of-the-century Japan. Drawing on anthropological and linguistic theory, the article explains amateurism as a post-Realist epithet for formalism. It seeks to counter the received view of the discipline as a pure product of American and European critiques of legal classicism by demonstrating how Wigmore's turn to the performative …

Manure Impacts On Interrill Erosion, John E. Gilley, Bahman Eghball, J. M. Blumenthal, David D. Baltensperger

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

This study was conducted to measure runoff and erosion from interrill areas as affected by the long-term application of manure and fertilizer to a Tripp sandy loam soil located near Mitchell, Nebraska. Soil that had been removed from the top 0.1 m of the soil profile was placed in a 1 m2 soil pan. Rainfall was then applied to the soil pan during initial and wet simulation events. Total runoff was similar on the manure and no-manure treatments. The long-term application of manure (55 years) at a rate of 27 Mg ha-1 (wet basis) per year did not …

Review Of Hazel Rue, Bomby The Bombardier Beetle, Brett C. Ratcliffe Jan 2001

Review Of Hazel Rue, Bomby The Bombardier Beetle, Brett C. Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Well, I thought that the style of brainwashing seen in this revisionist book went out with the 1950s Cold War era. However, the Institute for Creation Research demonstrates that brainwashing is alive and well as it continues to wage its own cold war against reason in order to replace it with superstition. In this highly disjointed little book, the target is young children, which makes the authors’ sin of deliberate ignorance even more reprehensible. Educating children about the wonders of nature is a delightful endeavor, but here it is a vehicle for blatantly meshing pseudo-natural history with creationist dogma that …

Review Of Cetoniimania, A Publication Devoted To Cetoniinae, Valginae, And Trichiinae., Brett C. Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

This beautifully produced publication devoted to Cetoniinae (Scarabaeidae) and their relatives is the brainchild of Robert Alexis (editor) and Michel Delpont (director of publication). Volume 1 (No. 1, 52 pp) was printed in September 2000 and contained articles clarifying the status of Potosia cuprea Fabr. (with magnificent color illustrations of beetles, habitats, and range maps), collecting on Krk island in Yugoslavia, the cetoniine fauna of Lesbos island in Greece, and Cetoniidarum Specierum Lexicon, which is a supplemental but integral part of Cetoniimania in which new taxa are described in both French and English (again, with excellent color illustrations and line …

The Tem1 Small Gtpase Controls Actomyosin And Septin Dynamics During Cytokinesis, John Lippincott, Katie Shannon, Wenying Shou, Raymond J. Deshaies, Rong Li Jan 2001

The Tem1 Small Gtpase Controls Actomyosin And Septin Dynamics During Cytokinesis, John Lippincott, Katie Shannon, Wenying Shou, Raymond J. Deshaies, Rong Li

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cytokinesis in budding yeast involves an actomyosin-based ring which assembles in a multistepped fashion during the cell cycle and constricts during cytokinesis. In this report, we have investigated the structural and regulatory events that occur at the onset of cytokinesis. The septins, which form an hour-glass like structure during early stages of the cell cycle, undergo dynamic rearrangements prior to cell division: the hourglass structure splits into two separate rings. The contractile ring, localized between the septin double rings, immediately undergoes contraction. Septin ring splitting is independent of actomyosin ring contraction as it still occurs in mutants where contraction fails. …

Abrogation Of Disease Development In Plants Expressing Animal Antiapoptotic Genes, M. B. Dickman, Y. K. Park, T. Oltersdorf, W. Li, T. Clemente, Roy C. French Jan 2001

Abrogation Of Disease Development In Plants Expressing Animal Antiapoptotic Genes, M. B. Dickman, Y. K. Park, T. Oltersdorf, W. Li, T. Clemente, Roy C. French

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

An emerging topic in plant biology is whether plants display analogous elements of mammalian programmed cell death during development and defense against pathogen attack. In many plant– pathogen interactions, plant cell death occurs in both susceptible and resistant host responses. For example, specific recognition responses in plants trigger formation of the hypersensitive response and activation of host defense mechanisms, resulting in restriction of pathogen growth and disease development. Several studies indicate that cell death during hypersensitive response involves activation of a plant-encoded pathway for cell death. Many susceptible interactions also result in host cell death, although it is not clear …

Three Distinct Mechanisms Facilitate Genetic Isolation Of Sympatric Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Lineages, Jeffrey Hall, Roy C. French, Gary L. Hein, Thomas Jack Morris, Drake Stenger Jan 2001

Three Distinct Mechanisms Facilitate Genetic Isolation Of Sympatric Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Lineages, Jeffrey Hall, Roy C. French, Gary L. Hein, Thomas Jack Morris, Drake Stenger

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Cross-protection and vector transmission bottlenecks have been proposed as mechanisms facilitating genetic isolation of sympatric viral lineages. Molecular markers were used to monitor establishment and resolution of mixed infections with genetically defined strains of wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV). Two closely related WSMV strains from the U.S. (Type and Sidney 81) exhibited reciprocal cross-protection in wheat, confirming this classic phenomenon as a mechanism of genetic isolation. In contrast, cross-protection between either U.S. strain and the divergent El Batan 3 strain from Mexico was unilateral, erratic, and only partially effective. Distribution of WSMV strains within individual leaves of plants supporting a …
