Single Rabbit Stomach Smooth Muscle Cell Myosin Heavy Chain Smb Expression And Shortening Velocity, Thomas J. Eddinger, Daniel P. Meer
Single Rabbit Stomach Smooth Muscle Cell Myosin Heavy Chain Smb Expression And Shortening Velocity, Thomas J. Eddinger, Daniel P. Meer
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Isolated single smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from different regions of the rabbit stomach were used to determine a possible correlation between unloaded shortening velocity and smooth muscle (SM) myosin heavy chain (MHC) S1 head isoform composition (SMA, no head insert; SMB, with head insert). α-Toxin-permeabilized isolated single cells were maximally activated to measure unloaded shortening velocity and subsequently used in an RT-PCR reaction to determine the SMA/SMB content of the same cell. SM MHC SMA and SMB isoforms are uniquely distributed in the stomach with cells from the fundic region expressing little SMB (38.1 ± 7.3% SMB; n = 16); …

Relative Kinematics Of The Rib Cage And Abdomen During Speech And Nonspeech Behaviors Of 15-Month-Old Children, Christopher A. Moore, Tammy J. Caulfield, Jordan R. Green
Relative Kinematics Of The Rib Cage And Abdomen During Speech And Nonspeech Behaviors Of 15-Month-Old Children, Christopher A. Moore, Tammy J. Caulfield, Jordan R. Green
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Speech motor control emerges in the neurophysiologic context of widely distributed, powerful coordinative mechanisms, including those mediating respiratory function. It is unknown, however, whether developing children are able to exploit the capabilities of neural circuits controlling homeostasis for the production of speech and voice. Speech and rest breathing were investigated in eleven 15-month-old children using inductance plethysmography (Respitrace). Rib cage and abdominal kinematics were studied using a time-varying correlational index of thoracoabdominal coupling (i.e., reflecting the synchrony of movement of the rib cage and abdomen) as well as simple classification of the moment-to-moment kinematic relationship of these two functional components …

Extinction is a natural process. Today, however, plant and animal species are disappearing world-wide at an accelerated pace. Based on current trends, half of the species on earth will be extinct within the next 100 years. The major cause of this phenomenon is large-scale destruction of native habitats, which has increased since European settlement began in the mid 1800's - in Oregon and throughout the New World.
Once lost, a species can never be recovered, and there is no way of knowing how useful it may have been. We do know that human beings and many of their industries depend …
Dose-Effect Relations In Simulated Psychotherapy As Measured By The Outcome Questionnaire-45.11, Brian J. Whitehall
Dose-Effect Relations In Simulated Psychotherapy As Measured By The Outcome Questionnaire-45.11, Brian J. Whitehall
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Outcome assessment has been used to evaluate the length of treatment needed and has been disputed for some time. Changes within both mental health and health insurance companies have contributed to a trend toward time-limited therapy and the optimal number of sessions has become a central issue. This study sought to extend research in the area of treatment outcome. Specifically. it examined the efficacy of psychotherapy after five and ten sessions on the subjective well-being of university students. Three hypotheses were tested in th.is study: (1) Subjective Well-Being scores (as measured by the Outcome Questionnaire-45. l l) for the treatment …

Life-History Evolution In Guppies. Vii. The Comparative Ecology Of High- And Low-Predation Environments, David Reznick, Mark J. Butler Iv, Helen Rodd
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Prior research has demonstrated a strong association between the species of predators that co-occur with guppies and the evolution of guppy life histories. The evolution of these differences in life histories has been attributed to the higher mortality rates experienced by guppies in high-predation environments. Here, we evaluate whether there might be indirect effects of predation on the evolution of life-history patterns and whether there are environmental differences that are correlated with predation. To do so, we quantified features of the physical and chemical environment and the population biology of guppies from seven high-and low-predation localities. We found that high-predation …

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2001-02-01, Wooster Voice Editors
The Voice: 2001-2011
This edition of the Wooster Voice was published on February 1 of 2001, and it is twelve pages in length. It discusses the administration's decision to shift the home of Greek organizations to Bissman and the Science and Humanities to Andrews Hall, in order to combat an overhaul of the housing department. Due to recent drug arrest on campus, the Voice restates the college's policy on drug use. The issue details upgrades being made to McGaw Chapel. The college is preparing for a trial in August regarding the hazing allegations made by former student Chris Babis. An article on page …

Environmental Certification Systems And U.S. Environmental Law: Closer Than You May Think, Errol E. Meidinger
Environmental Certification Systems And U.S. Environmental Law: Closer Than You May Think, Errol E. Meidinger
Journal Articles
Many industrial organizations are committing to achieve improved environmental performance through non-governmentally instituted environmental certification programs. Such programs typically define the environmental standards that firms must meet as well as the organizational mechanisms required to achieve and "certify" compliance. Well known examples include the chemical industry's "Responsible Care" program, the International Organization for Standardization's "ISO 14000" environmental management program, and the Forest Stewardship Council's well-managed forests program.
Because of their ostensibly private and voluntary nature, environmental certification programs are often presumed to be separate and distinct from law. In fact, however, they are deeply intertwined with law, and seem likely …

Planning For A Peaceful Korea, Henry D. Sokolski Mr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
With the change of administrations in Washington, current U.S. policy toward North Korea will naturally undergo review and scrutiny. The essays in this volume offer an option to the current engagement approach. The authors suggest an alternative strategy for promoting peace and security in the Korean peninsula different from the ones contemplated or implemented by Washington in recent years.

Predicting Forage Quality In Switchgrass And Big Bluestem, Rob Mitchell, John Fritz, Ken Moore, Lowell E. Moser, Ken Vogel, Daren D. Redfearn, David Wester
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Predicting forage quality would help producers scheduled hay harvesting to obtain desired hay quality. Our objective was to determine if growing degree day (GDD), day of the year (DOY), mean stage count (MSC), and mean stage weight (MSW) could be used to predict in vitro digestible dry matter (IVDDM), crude protein (CP), and neutral-detergent fiber (NDF) of ‘Trailblazer’ switchgrass (Panicum virgatum.) and ‘Pawnee’ big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) grown in Nebraska and Kansas. This field study was conducted from 1990 to 1993 at Mead, NE on Typic Argiudoll soils and from 1992 to 1993 at Manhattan, KS …
Familial Mediterranean Fever, Hatem E. El-Shanti
Familial Mediterranean Fever, Hatem E. El-Shanti
Saudi Medical Journal
Familial Mediterranean Fever is a genetic disorder frequently diagnosed among the Arabs. It is also prevalent among Jews, Armenians and Turks. The clinical picture consists of febrile and painful attacks that differ in quality across patients and even within the same patient. There may be accompanying joint pain, chest pain, skin manifestations and other findings, and amyloidosis may occur in some patients as a complication. The primary treatment is Colchicine, which decreases the frequency of the attacks and prevents the occurrence of amyloidosis. The gene responsible for Familial Mediterranean Fever, MEFV, has been mapped and cloned and mutations were identified …

Characterization Of The Laminated Layer Of In Vitro Cultivated Echinococcus Vogeli Metacestodes, Katrin Ingold, Wenjuan Dai, Robert L. Rausch, Bruno Gottstein, Andrew Hemphill
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The metacestode (larval) stages of the cestode parasites Echinococcus vogeli and E. multilocularis were isolated from the peritoneal cavity of experimentally infected C57BL/6 mice and were cultured in vitro for a period of up to four months under conditions normally applied for the in vitro cultivation of E. multilocularis metacestodes. In contrast to E. multilocularis, E. vogeli did not exhibit extensive exogenous budding and proliferation but increased in size with a final diameter of up to 10 mm. Most metacestodes contained protoscoleces, singly or in groups, either associated with brood capsules or growing directly out of the germinal layer. …
