A Demographic Approach To Race And Ethnicity In Metropolitan And Non-Metropolitan Regions Of Arkansas, 1990 And 1999, Todd W. Hodgson, Frank L. Farmer, Wayne P. Miller, Donald D. Voth
AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins
This manuscript provides an empirical portrait of emergent trends in the growth, distribution, and racial and ethnic composition of Arkansas’ resident population. Particular attention is given to variation in the racial and ethnic composition of the estimated population among different regions of the state. During the 1990’s, racial and ethnic diversity increased statewide due in large part to Hispanic population growth in all regions. Black population growth was greatest in central Arkansas while Asian and Native American population growth increased most rapidly in the northwest metropolitan regions of the state. Overall, both metropolitan and non-metropolitan Arkansas communities have a more …

Virulence Of Puccinia Triticina On Wheat In Nebraska During 1997 And 1998, J. E. Watkins, J. Schimelfenig, P. Stephen Baenziger, Kent M. Eskridge
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Urediniospore isolates of Puccinia triticina were obtained from wheat leaf collections made in three wheat-growing regions in Nebraska in 1997 and in four regions in 1998. Using 16 Thatcher lines that are near-isogenic for leaf rust resistance, 17 virulence phenotypes were found among 121 single uredinial isolates in 1997, and 42 virulence phenotypes were found among 178 isolates in 1998. The most prevalent phenotype in 1997 was MDRR (virulent on Lr1, 3, 3ka, 10, 11, 18, 23, 24, and 30). In 1998, virulence phenotypes MDRR and MDRM (virulent on Lr1, 3, 3ka, 10, 11, 23, 24, and 30 …

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
This report is the compilation of a multi~year project that was directed at identifying the impact and possible mitigation solutions of non-point pollution from row crop agriculture in a watershed in the Arkansas Delta. The first part of the project involved an inventory of the condition of the major streams that make up the study watershed. The remainder of the project was focused at demonstrating and reporting best management nutrient and sediment runoff control practices (BMP) that could be implemented. The final assessment of the demonstration work is a GIS analysis that provides an overview of the effectiveness of these …

Commercial Systems For The Direct Detection Of Explosives (For Explosive Ordnance Disposal Tasks), Claudio Bruschini
Global CWD Repository
The main goal of this study, carried out by the author on behalf of the Swiss Defence Procurement Agency (DPA), was to characterise existing technologies, and identify corresponding commercially available systems, for the direct detection of explosives for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) tasks. Systems should be able to determine if a given piece of munition contains explosives or is inert, and ideally in the former case to establish the type of explosive (see also Annex A2.1). This will be often referred to in the following as the “task at hand”, or the “task of interest to us”. Note that the …

Sustainable Tourism Plan For The Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Fisheries Western Australia
Sustainable Tourism Plan For The Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Fisheries Western Australia
Fisheries Management Papers
The Abrolhos coral reefs are the southernmost living reefs in the Indian Ocean. They have a unique assemblage of tropical species of fish, reef corals and other invertebrates, which live in close association with temperate species, particularly of algae, and species endemic to Western Australia. The Abrolhos is the centre of the fishery for the commercially valuable western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus). Terrestrial flora and fauna of the Abrolhos are relict and provide important reference areas on ecological interactions. Virtually all the islands of the Abrolhos archipelago have sea bird nesting and breeding areas, and populations of some species of …

Treatment Of Choice Or A Last Resort? A Review Of Residential Mental Health Placements For Children And Adolescents, Karen Frensch, Gary Cameron, Gerald R. Adams
Partnerships for Children and Families Project
Residential treatment is often regarded as a treatment of ‘last resort’ and, increasingly, residential treatment programs are being asked to address the needs of very troubled children and adolescents. This paper is an effort to summarize what is currently known about the effects of residential treatment for children and adolescents. The review is organized into two sections: studies of the effectiveness of group home residential treatment and studies of the effectiveness of residential treatment delivered in residential treatment centres. In both areas, we attempt to identify trends within treatment, as well as patterns found in the literature that characterize post …

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances
Thank you for inviting me to be with you this morning. I am happy both to be here at your conference, and to be in Nebraska.
My wife Virginia and I slipped into the state literally the week before Christmas, arriving in the face of a strong north wind and windchills hitting 35 to 40 below. It was an exciting advent to our new home, driving for hours over icy, snow packed roads. Living in New Mexico all those years, I’d forgotten how tightly a person can grip a Steering wheel during a white-out!

Book Review: Fauna Iberica, Volume 14: Coleoptera, Scarabaeoidea I. (Martin-Piera, F. And J. I. Lopez-Colon), Brett C. Ratcliffe
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
At over 500 pages, this is only the first volume of a probable three volume Spanish language treatment of the Scarabaeoidea of the Iberian peninsula. Volume one is a comprehensive and detailed piece of work in the grand tradition of faunas and floras. This first volume treats all of the "lower" scarabaeoids (Laparosticti) except for the Aphodiidae and Aegialiidae, which will appear in the next scarabaeoid volume. The third volume will treat the "higher" scarabs (Pleurosticti).
The book begins with a brief overview of the morphology and life cycle of scarabaeoids followed by a discussion on various relationship hypotheses of …

Post-Fledging Dispersal Of Burrowing Owls In Southwestern Idaho: Characterization Of Movements And Use Of Satellite Burrows, R. Andrew King, James R. Belthoff
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Using radiotelemetry, we monitored dispersing juvenile Western Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) within a migratory population in southwestern Idaho during 1994 and 1995. Owls remained within natal areas for an average (± SE) of 58 ± 3.4 days post-hatching before moving permanently beyond 300 m, which was our operational cutoff for dispersal from the natal area. On average, owls dispersed on 27 July (range: 15 July to 22 August), which was approximately 4 weeks after fledging. After initiating dispersal, juveniles continued moving farther away from their natal burrows and, by 61-65 days post-hatching, they had moved 0.6 ± …

Appreciating The Beauty Of Earth, Jame Schaefer
Appreciating The Beauty Of Earth, Jame Schaefer
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Categories used by contemporary environmental philosophers to explore esthetic appreciation for the beauty of the physical world have parallels in reflections by patristic and medieval theologians on the beauty of God's creation, A sampling of the theologians' notions yields a promising foundation for ecological ethics from a theistic perspective, especially when understood from their world view at the time the text was written, reformulated to reflect broad scientific findings about the world today, and worked creatively to identify norms for human behavior.

Objective: Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) and granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) are frequently used in cancer patients to overcome the granulocytopenic effects of chemotherapy, and also to mobilize the stem cells. The mobilized stem cells are collected from the peripheral blood and used for transplantation following high doses of chemotherapy. However, the molecular mechanism by which these colony stimulating factors (CSFs) bring about proliferation of myeloid precursor cells is not clearly known. Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), which has an established role in DNA synthesis, could be a link between administration of CSF and stem cell proliferation. The purpose of this study …

Use Of Flow Cytometry, Fluorescence Microscopy, And Pcr-Based Techniques To Assess Intraspecific And Interspecific Matings Of Armillaria Species, Mee-Sook Kim, Ned B. Klopfenstein, Geral I. Mcdonald, Kathiravetpillai Arumuganathan, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
For assessments of intraspecific mating using flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy, two compatible basidiospore-derived isolates were selected from each of four parental basidiomata of North American Biological Species (NABS) X. The nuclear status in NABS X varied with basidiospore-derived isolates. Nuclei within basidiospore-derived isolates existed as haploids, diploids (doubled haploids), or a mixture of haploids and diploids (doubled haploids). Depending on the nuclear status of the basidiospore-derived lines of NABS X, intraspecifically mated cultures can exist as diploids or tetraploids, and possibly triploids or aneuploids under in vitro conditions. Based on previous in vitro mating studies, seven basidiospore isolates were …
