Genetic Testing's "Soft Underbelly": Christian Vision And Bio-Utopia, M Therese Lysaught
Genetic Testing's "Soft Underbelly": Christian Vision And Bio-Utopia, M Therese Lysaught
Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works
To distinguish genetic testing's positive aspects from its downsides, we who work in Catholic health care must begin examining these new technologies in the light of our faith tradition. In this article, as a first step in creating such a theological-moral critique, I identify: • four dimensions of genetic testing that belie its benevolent image • Three central Christian beliefs that are useful in assessing or challenging various assumptions and practices associated with genetic testing By bringing the latter to bear on the former, I hope to provide a model for how further theological-moral critique might proceed.
Innocence Protection Act: Death Penalty Reform On The Horizon, Ronald Weich
Innocence Protection Act: Death Penalty Reform On The Horizon, Ronald Weich
All Faculty Scholarship
The criminal justice pendulum may be swinging back in the direction of fairness. The Innocence Protection Act of 2001, introduced in both the Senate and the House of Representatives earlier this year, promises meaningful reforms in the administration of capital punishment in the United States.
Unlike previous slabs at reform, the Innocence Protection Act (lPA) has a real chance to become law because it commands unusually broad bipartisan support. The Senate bill (S. 486) is sponsored by Democrat Pat Leahy of Vermont and Republican Gordon Smith of Oregon. The House bill (H.R. 912) is sponsored by Democrat Bill Delahunt of …

Closing The Window Of Opportunity: The Limited Rights Of Putative Fathers Under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 48-3-601 And In Re Byrd, Lauren Vaughan
Campbell Law Review
This note will discuss whether the court's interpretation of N.C. Gen. Stat. § 48- 3-601 is consistent with legislative intent and with North Carolina case law, and will then address whether this statute adequately protects the constitutional rights of unmarried putative fathers as mandated by the United States Supreme Court.

Trusting Doctors: Tricky Business When It Comes To Clinical Research, Frances H. Miller
Trusting Doctors: Tricky Business When It Comes To Clinical Research, Frances H. Miller
Faculty Scholarship
This article examines the troublesome ethical dilemmas arising out of physician conflicts of interest in the context of research on human beings. It focuses on the inevitable conflict between the objectives of clinical investigators and those of their human subjects to illuminate subtle divergences of interest in doctor-patient relationships that patients often do not recognize - or want to believe. Once perceived, however, these potentially corroding conflicts can stun research subjects and their families, and leave them feeling deeply betrayed by their clinicians. The article concludes that a researcher's substantial financial conflicts constitute material information which, absent compelling circumstances, the …

First Nations Students: What Some Teachers Do That Make Them Successful, Robert M. Peacock Edd
First Nations Students: What Some Teachers Do That Make Them Successful, Robert M. Peacock Edd
Dissertations
With the European settlement of North America, the education of First Nations children shifted from being carried out in a natural setting by all community members, communicated through observation and trial, and instructed through values, needs, and traditions; to a whole-group learning model founded on a standard curriculum based on successes and failures. For at least the past fifty years First Nations adults have demanded greater control over their children's education. Recently, the Ministry of Education in British Columbia (BC) has advocated for greater success of First Nations students by providing funding for additional support and by increasing the number …

Primary Structure And Sexual Stage-Specific Expression Of A Lammer Protein Kinase Of Plasmodium Falciparum, J-L Li, Gat Targett, Da Baker
School of Biomedical Sciences
We have isolated a LAMMER-like gene from Plasmodium falciparum by vectorette technique. The gene consists of 3316 bp encoding a protein 881 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of approximately 106.7 kDa. The encoded protein, termed PfLAMMER, is composed of two distinct domains. The N-terminal domain is not related to any previously described protein kinases and has several interesting features including multiple consensus phosphorylation sites for a range of protein kinases, a number of RS/SR dipeptides, a large proportion of charged amino acids, two putative nuclear localisation signals and 14 copies of a tetramer DKYD repeats. The C-terminal domain …

Tissue microarrays allow high-throughput molecular profiling of cancer specimens by immunohistochemistry. Phenotype information of sections from arrayed biopsies on a multitissue block needs to be representative of full sections, as protein expression varies throughout the entire tumor specimen. To validate the use of tissue microarrays for immunophenotyping, we studied a group of 59 fibroblastic tumors with variable protein expression patterns by immunohistochemistry for Ki-67, p53, and the retinoblastoma protein (pRB). Data on full tissue sections were compared to the results of one, two, and three 0.6-mm core biopsies per tumor on a tissue array. Ki-67 and p53 staining was read …

The mineral carbonation, a process of converting CO2 into stable minerals (mineralization), has been studied extensively to capture and store CO2. However, most of the mineral carbonation studies have been largely investigated at lab scale. Preliminary and pilot scale studies for accelerated mineral carbonation (AMC) were conducted at one of the largest coal-fired power plants (2120 MW) in the USA by reacting flue gas with fly ash particles in a fluidized bed reactor. In the preliminary experiments, flue gas CO2 and SO2 concentrations decreased from 13.0 to 9.6% and from 107.8 to 15.1 ppmv, respectively during the first 2 min. …

Correlates Of Life Satisfaction After Retirement, Richard A. Tackett
Dissertations
Much of the literature on aging, retirement, and stages of life has focused on men. The changing role from productive members of society to that of being retired can be either viewed as an opportunity to experience new adventures or depressing for those who are unable to move successfully into the next developmental stage of life. This study examined factors that could contribute to life satisfaction in 144 individuals who were over 65 years of age. The factors that were included in this examination are self-esteem, morale, depression, and demographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity, educational level, marital status, income, …

Topic Detection, Tracking, And Trend Analysis Using Self-Organizing Neural Networks, Kanagasabai Rajaraman, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We address the problem of Topic Detection and Tracking (TDT) and subsequently detecting trends from a stream of text documents. Formulating TDT as a clustering problem in a class of self-organizing neural networks, we propose an incremental clustering algorithm. On this setup we show how trends can be identified. Through experimental studies, we observe that our method enables discovering interesting trends that are deducible only from reading all relevant documents.
In Support Of A Rationally Managed Fishery: Age And Growth In Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus Eleginoides), Julian R. Ashford
In Support Of A Rationally Managed Fishery: Age And Growth In Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus Eleginoides), Julian R. Ashford
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) occur on the continental shelves and shelf breaks of southern South America and the Southern Ocean. Stock structure, critical to good fisheries management, can be inferred from growth differences between areas, but available growth data are compromised by inconsistencies in age estimation methods, sampling and sample sizes, and techniques used to derive estimates. I asked the scientific question: how is growth in Patagonian toothfish structured spatially within the Southern Ocean? I developed a multi-stage randomized design to sample fish caught by commercial longline, and an age estimation methodology. Because toothfish are difficult to age, …
Effects Of Human Disturbances On The Behavior Of Dabbling Ducks, Melissa Lynn Pease
Effects Of Human Disturbances On The Behavior Of Dabbling Ducks, Melissa Lynn Pease
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Disturbance of wintering and migrating birds by human activities can cause birds to expend energy in avoidance of humans and reduces the time available for resting and feeding at a time in the annual cycle when fat deposition and energy conservation are important. Also, human disturbances can effectively cause habitat loss by displacing birds from feeding or resting habitat. Managers of natural resources are increasingly faced with decisions about the types and amounts of public use that should be allowed without lowering the value of the resource for wildlife. In order for managers to make decisions about how to minimize …

Urban Terrorism: Strategies For Mitigating Terrorist Attacks Against The Domestic Urban Environment, John J. Kiefer
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management
This study identifies strategies to mitigate the impact of terrorist attacks against the domestic urban environment. It uses multiple qualitative research methods to identify patterns of attack used by terrorists against urban targets in the United States and suggest ways for policymakers to mitigate the effects of a terrorist attack through not only physical, but also organizational, political, legal, and social strategies. It uses case analysis, literature review, and interviews with experts in domestic terrorism preparedness to develop and suggest solutions.
Terrorism, as with other criminal acts, can best be met by implementing strategies to mitigate the impact of this …
The Implications Of The Target-Area Hypothesis On The Population Dynamics Of The Spotted Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Guttatus, Denice N. Robertson
The Implications Of The Target-Area Hypothesis On The Population Dynamics Of The Spotted Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Guttatus, Denice N. Robertson
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The target-area hypothesis, based on the theory of island biogeography, predicts that larger islands are more effective at intercepting passive immigrants. Most marine invertebrates have meroplanktonic larvae and open population dynamics, so immigration to populations in isolated benthic habitats is primarily by pelagic larval recruits. Thus, recruitment to isolated habitat “islands” may be more continuous and predictable on large islands than on small ones. Consequently, populations on large islands should not only be larger than those on small islands, but should also have more evenly distributed size structures. These differences in size structure among populations in isolated habitats of differing …
