Class, Cultism, And Multiculturalism: A Notebook On Forging A Revolutionary Politics, Peter Mclaren, Ramin Farahmandpur

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The writers examine the globalization of capitalism and its implications for class, cultism, and multiculturalism. They cite the need for a revolutionary multicultural pedagogy that would connect the social identities of the marginalized and oppressed with their reproduction within capitalist production relations.

Sars, A Sara Homolog Repressible By Agr, Is An Activator Of Protein A Synthesis In Staphylococcus Aureus, Ambrose L. Cheung, Katherine Schmidt, Brian Bateman, Adhar C. Manna

Dartmouth Scholarship

The expression of protein A (spa) is repressed by global regulatory loci sarA and agr. Although SarA may directly bind to the spa promoter to downregulate spa expression, the mechanism by which agr represses spa expression is not clearly understood. In searching for SarA homologs in the partially released genome, we found a SarA homolog, encoding a 250-amino-acid protein designated SarS, upstream of the spa gene. The expression of sarS was almost undetectable in parental strain RN6390 but was highly expressed in agr and sarA mutants, strains normally expressing high level of protein A. Interestingly, protein A …

Circadian Clock-Specific Roles For The Light Response Protein White Collar-2, Michael A. Collett, Jay C. Dunlap, Jennifer J. Loros Apr 2001

Circadian Clock-Specific Roles For The Light Response Protein White Collar-2, Michael A. Collett, Jay C. Dunlap, Jennifer J. Loros

Dartmouth Scholarship

To understand the role of white collar-2 in theNeurospora circadian clock, we examined alleles ofwc-2 thought to encode partially functional proteins. We found that wc-2 allele ER24 contained a conservative mutation in the zinc finger. This mutation results in reduced levels of circadian rhythm-critical clock gene products, frq mRNA and FRQ protein, and in a lengthened period of the circadian clock. In addition, this mutation altered a second canonical property of the clock, temperature compensation: as temperature increased, period length decreased substantially. This temperature compensation defect correlated with a temperature-dependent increase in overall FRQ protein levels, with the …

Aluminium Toxicokinetics: An Updated Minireview, Robert A. Yokel, Patrick J. Mcnamara Apr 2001

Aluminium Toxicokinetics: An Updated Minireview, Robert A. Yokel, Patrick J. Mcnamara

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

This MiniReview updates and expands the MiniReview of aluminium toxicokinetics by Wilhelm et al. published by this journal in 1990. The use of 26Al, analyzed by accelerator mass spectrometry, now enables determination of Al toxicokinetics under physiological conditions. There is concern about aluminium in drinking water. The common sources of aluminium for man are reviewed. Oral Al bioavailability from water appears to be about 0.3%. Food is the primary common source. Al bioavailability from food has not been adequately determined. Industrial and medicinal exposure, and perhaps antiperspirant use, can significantly increase absorbed aluminium. Inhalation bioavailability of airborne soluble Al …

Identity Crisis: “Intersectionality,” “Multidimensionality,” And The Development Of An Adequate Theory Of Subordination, Darren Lenard Hutchinson Apr 2001

Identity Crisis: “Intersectionality,” “Multidimensionality,” And The Development Of An Adequate Theory Of Subordination, Darren Lenard Hutchinson

UF Law Faculty Publications

While essentialism remains a prominent feature of progressive social movements, critical scholars have offered persuasive arguments against traditional, single-issue politics and have proposed reforms in a variety of doctrinal and policy contexts. The feminist of color critiques of feminism and antiracism provided the earliest framework for analyzing oppression in complex terms. Feminists of color and other critical scholars have examined racism and patriarchy as “intersecting” phenomena, rather than as separate and mutually exclusive systems of domination. Their work on the intersectionality of subordination has encouraged some judges and progressive scholars to discard the “separate spheres” analysis of race and gender. …

Integrating Water Management And Land Use Planning: Uncovering The Missing Link In The Protection Of Florida's Water Resources?, Mary Jane Angelo Apr 2001

Integrating Water Management And Land Use Planning: Uncovering The Missing Link In The Protection Of Florida's Water Resources?, Mary Jane Angelo

UF Law Faculty Publications

Except for limited provisions, Florida law does not establish a formal link between land planning and water planning. In light of the importance of water resources for the future development of the State, this is a significant "missing link."

This article explores the link between water management and land use planning. First, in Section II, this article provides an overview of water management in Florida. Then, in Section III, this article analyzes the differences between planning and regulatory permitting and asserts that both are needed for effective protection of water resources. Section IV reviews the current role that land use …

Acid Phosphatase Activity In Human Breast Tumors, Reginald Halaby, Jafar Abdollahi, Minerva L. Martinez Apr 2001

Acid Phosphatase Activity In Human Breast Tumors, Reginald Halaby, Jafar Abdollahi, Minerva L. Martinez

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We examined lysosomal participation in the degradation of tumor cells from human breast biopsies, utilizing the histochemical activity and localization of acid phosphatase (AP). Enzyme activities in benign and malignant lesions were compared. AP was faintly detected in normal mammary epithelia and was marked in malignant cells. The histochemical patterns of AP distribution in the breast tissues showed differences between normal and neoplastic cells. AP staining was more intense in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) associated with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) cases compared to when IDC was present alone. These results suggest that non-invasive breast cancers, such as DCIS, may …

Problem-Based Learning. A Critical Review Of Its Educational Objectives And The Rationale For Its Use, Samy A. Azer Apr 2001

Problem-Based Learning. A Critical Review Of Its Educational Objectives And The Rationale For Its Use, Samy A. Azer

Saudi Medical Journal

Over the past 30 years there has been an increasing interest in curriculum innovation in medical schools in North America, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Australia. Since the introduction of problem-based learning at McMaster University in Canada in 1969, several medical schools throughout the world have adopted problem-based learning as the educational and philosophical basis of their curricula. Several studies have shown that problem-based learning is an important educational strategy for integrating the curriculum, motivating the students and helping them to identify their learning issues and set their own learning goals. However, there is a great deal of concern regarding …

Grandma Got Run Over By The Supreme Court: Suggestions For A Constitutional Nonparental Visitation Statute After Troxel V. Granville, Eric B. Martin Apr 2001

Grandma Got Run Over By The Supreme Court: Suggestions For A Constitutional Nonparental Visitation Statute After Troxel V. Granville, Eric B. Martin

Washington Law Review

Every state in the Union has a statute allowing for court-ordered child visitation by non-parents. Until the summer of 2000, the U.S. Supreme Court had never ruled on the constitutionality of such statutes. When the Court finally tackled Washington's statute in Troxel v. Granville, the Court left the most significant questions unanswered, while casting doubt on the validity of Washington's statute. Prior to Troxel, the Washington Supreme Court had held Washington's nonparental visitation statute facially unconstitutional, finding that the statute violated the Fourteenth Amendment rights of parents. After granting certiorari, the U.S. Supreme Court held Washington's statute unconstitutional …
