Plaque Rupture And Stabilization In Coronary Artery: Current Concepts And Therapeutic Implications, Albert Wai-Suen Leung Apr 2001

Plaque Rupture And Stabilization In Coronary Artery: Current Concepts And Therapeutic Implications, Albert Wai-Suen Leung

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Rupture of an atherosclerotic plaque has become the most important mechanism leading to acute coronary syndrome. A plaque that is prone to rupture has certain characteristic structural, cellular and molecular features, all of which indicate a state of active inflammation within the plaque. The vulnerability of a plaque to rupturing is related to multiple factors including chronic inflammation or infection, oxidative stress, and mechanical and haemodynamic stresses. Once a plaque ruptures, thrombus formation occurs, which can be occlusive or non-occlusive, depending on the thrombogenic and haemodynamic factors. Plaque stabilization is a concept of how to prevent plaque rupture. Lipid-lowering drugs …

Ground Movement Associated With Microtunneling, Zhenyang Duan Apr 2001

Ground Movement Associated With Microtunneling, Zhenyang Duan

Doctoral Dissertations

Microtunneling is a trenchless technology for construction of pipelines. Its process is a cyclic pipe jacking operation. Microtunneling has been typically used for gravity sewer systems in urban areas. Despite its good success record overall, several large ground settlement cases caused by microtunneling have been reported. Also, in contrast with large diameter urban tunneling, there are few research projects about the ground settlement caused by microtunneling.

In this dissertation, the ground settlement caused by microtunneling is studied using a theoretical approach, empirical approach, numerical simulation approach, and artificial intelligence approach.

In the theoretical approach, the equivalent ground loss and settlement …

Reducing Decomposition Time In Landfills By An Aerobic Process, Cameron Clark Apr 2001

Reducing Decomposition Time In Landfills By An Aerobic Process, Cameron Clark

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This experiment was performed to determine if sludge produced by the paper industry could be composted faster by promoting the aerobic degradation process. To perform this experiment, I chose a sludge produced by a virgin pulp mill. Once I collected sludge, it was dewatered to a moisture content of sixty-five percent or less. As soon as the sludge was dewatered, I set up four separate composting systems, three of which were run under aerobic conditions and one that was run under anaerobic conditions. The anaerobic conditions only had sludge and plastic for its bulking agent. In the aerobic systems there …

Environmental Provisions In The Wto And Asian Developing Country Perspective, Aparna Sawhney Apr 2001

Environmental Provisions In The Wto And Asian Developing Country Perspective, Aparna Sawhney

Working Papers

This paper analyses the impact of the SPS and TBT agreements on developing Asian countries with special reference to India. The implementation of these provisions has raised questions of economic protection versus environmental protection. Departure from harmonized international standards, and proliferation of eco-branding in the North, has resulted in market fragmentation for developing country exports. While consumer sovereignty/environmental risk preferences of different nations have to be respected, developing countries need to express their own environmental priorities. Only then would global diversity in environmental endowment and knowledge be accurately reflected in the multilateral trading system and help achieve sustainable development.

Etsu Today - Spring 2001, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

With each issue of ETSU TODAY, it is my pleasure to share with you thoughts about this university, a place we hold with such great pride. The university has served generations of students well, with faculty who have prepared them for bright futures and many opportunities that life brings. ETSU has launched many great personal triumphs and revels in the successes of all our university family. Just a few years ago, I asked leaders of our ETSU Foundation to consider undertaking a fund-raising campaign. This campaign, our first ever, would be necessary to reach beyond our usual support, to encourage …

Infrared Spectroscopy Of H-Bonded Bridges Stretched Across The Cis-Amide Group: I. Water Bridges, Joel R. Carney, A. V. Fedorov, John R. Cable, Timothy S. Zwier Apr 2001

Infrared Spectroscopy Of H-Bonded Bridges Stretched Across The Cis-Amide Group: I. Water Bridges, Joel R. Carney, A. V. Fedorov, John R. Cable, Timothy S. Zwier

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The water-containing clusters of oxindole (OI) and 3,4-dihydro-2(1H)-quinolinone (DQ) have been studied in the hydride stretch region of the infrared by the technique of resonant ion-dip infrared spectroscopy (RIDIRS). Both OI and DQ are constrained cis-amides with adjacent N-H and C=O groups between which water can form H-bonded bridges. The hydride stretch fundamentals of OI-W-n with n = 1-3 and DQ-W-n with n = 1, 2 without exception divide up into free OH stretch fundamentals near 3700 cm(-1) and a set of H-bonded bridge fundamentals in the 3200-3450 cm(-1) region. The bridge fundamentals show a distribution of intensities that reflects …

In Vivo Titration Of Mitomycin C Action By The Presence Of Four Escherichia Coli Genomic Regions On Multicopy Plasmid, Y. Wei, Amy Cheng Vollmer, R. A. Larossa

Biology Faculty Works

Mitomycin C (MMC), a DNA-damaging agent, is a potent inducer of the bacterial SOS response; surprisingly, it has not been used to select resistant mutants from wild-type Escherichia coli. MMC resistance is caused by the presence of any of four distinct E. coli genes (mdfA, gyrl, rob, and sdiA) on high-copy-number vectors. mdfA encodes a membrane efflux pump whose overexpression results in broad-spectrum chemical resistance. The gyrI (also called sbmC) gene product inhibits DNA gyrase activity in vitro, while the rob protein appears to function in transcriptional activation of efflux pumps. SdiA is a transcriptional activator of ftsQAZ genes involved …
