Litter Breakdown In Mountain Streams Affected By Mine Drainage: Biotic Mediation Of Abiotic Controls, Dev Niyogi, William M. Lewis Jr., Diane M. Mcknight Apr 2001

Litter Breakdown In Mountain Streams Affected By Mine Drainage: Biotic Mediation Of Abiotic Controls, Dev Niyogi, William M. Lewis Jr., Diane M. Mcknight

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Breakdown of plant litter in streams was studied as an example of a major ecological process subject to change through multiple stresses associated with mine drainage. Rates of litter breakdown were measured at 27 sites in streams of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA. Eight of the sites were pristine, and 19 were affected to varying degrees by mine drainage. The pH, concentrations of dissolved zinc, and deposition rates of metal oxides were measured in each stream. Rates of litter breakdown were estimated from changes in mass of willow leaves in litterbags. Biomass of shredding invertebrates in litterbags was monitored …

The Impact Of Conventional Force Reductions On Strategic Deterrence: A Game-Theoretic Analysis, D. Marc Kilgour, Frank C. Zagare Apr 2001

The Impact Of Conventional Force Reductions On Strategic Deterrence: A Game-Theoretic Analysis, D. Marc Kilgour, Frank C. Zagare

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Many game-theoretic analyses of deterrence confirm the commonsense view that what determines whether a defender can effectively deter a challenger from an unwanted action is (1) the challenger’s perception of the level of punishment that the defender will be able to impose on the challenger should it take the action, and (2) the challenger’s level of belief about the likelihood of the defender actually carrying out this punishment. Reduction of the defender’s forces may affect both the defender’s ability to retaliate and its perceived willingness to do so. Game-theoretic methods are used to assess how the limits on both of …

Globalization has hurt both developed and developing countries. Capitalism's relations of exploitation can hurt people of color in disabling ways. Discusses the relationships among race, gender, ethnic, and class identities in order to articulate a political framework that moves toward transnational ethnic alliances, abolishing the role of capital and the forms of exploitation and violence that flourish under capitalism.

The Scientific Foundations Of Habitat Conservation Plans: A Quantitative Assessment, Elaine K. Harding, Elizabeth E. Crone, Bret D. Elderd, Jonathan M. Hoekstra, Alexa J. Mckerrow, John D. Perrine, Jim Regetz, Leslie J. Rissler, Amanda G. Stanley, Eric L. Walters, Nceas Habitat Conservation Plan Working Group

Biological Sciences

The number of habitat conservation plans ( HCP) has risen dramatically since the first plan was written over 18 years ago. Until recently, no studies have quantitatively investigated the scientific foundations underlying these documents. As part of a larger study of HCPs, we examined 43 plans primarily to assess the availability and use of scientific data and secondarily to determine the extent of involvement by, and influence of, independent scientists within the process. Specifically, our analysis focused on five key steps taken when an HCP is developed: assessing status of a species, determining take, predicting the project effects, mitigating for …

Visitor Capacity In The National Park System, Dr. Glenn E. Haas, National Park Service, U.S. Department Of The Interior Apr 2001

Visitor Capacity In The National Park System, Dr. Glenn E. Haas, National Park Service, U.S. Department Of The Interior

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This paper reviews social science research on visitor capacity relevant to units of the National Park System (NPS). Visitor capacity is defined as a prescribed number and type of people that an area will accommodate given the desired natural/cultural resource conditions, visitor experiences, and management program. Some 40 years of scientific investigation illustrate the complexity of the interaction between human use and park resources. This paper provides insights from environmental psychology on person-environment relationships, nine capacity-related research findings, a matrix of NPS studies, and recommendations for a program of research.

Weed Control Methods Handbook: Tools & Techniques For Use In Natural Areas, Mandy Tu, Callie Hurd, John M. Randall, The Nature Conservancy

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Invasive non-native plants are a serious threat to native species, communities, and ecosystems in many areas around the world. They can compete with and displace native plants, animals, and other organisms that depend on them, alter ecosystem functions and cycles significantly, hybridize with native species, and promote other invaders. The good news is that many plant invasions can be reversed, halted or slowed, and in certain situations, even badly infested areas can be restored to healthy systems dominated by native species. In most instances this requires taking action to control and manage those invasive plants. This handbook provides you with …

Positive Possibilities For Child And Family Welfare: Options For Expanding The Anglo-American Child Protection Paradigm, Gary Cameron, Nancy Colleen Freymond, Denise Cornfield, Sally Palmer Apr 2001

Positive Possibilities For Child And Family Welfare: Options For Expanding The Anglo-American Child Protection Paradigm, Gary Cameron, Nancy Colleen Freymond, Denise Cornfield, Sally Palmer

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

The creation of the ‘problem of child maltreatment’ and how we deal with it are best understood as particular discourses which grow out of specific histories and social configurations. The Anglo-American child protection paradigm can be viewed as a particular configuration rooted in our vision for children, families, community, and society. However, other settings have constructed quite different responses reflecting their own priorities and desired outcomes. This paper is an effort to understand the choices made in Ontario’s child protection system by examining its history and the underlying beliefs and values which have fostered its development. In addition, the paper …
