Genetic Algorithms For Communications Network Design - An Empirical Study Of The Factors That Influence Performance, Hsinghua Chou, G. Premkumar, Chao-Hsien Chu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We explore the use of GAs for solving a network optimization problem, the degree-constrained minimum spanning tree problem. We also examine the impact of encoding, crossover, and mutation on the performance of the GA. A specialized repair heuristic is used to improve performance. An experimental design with 48 cells and ten data points in each cell is used to examine the impact of two encoding methods, three crossover methods, two mutation methods, and four networks of varying node sizes. Two performance measures, solution quality and computation time, are used to evaluate the performance. The results obtained indicate that encoding has …

Inorganic elements and organic residues of the soil samples were characterized. Results indicated that AI-Buraimi soil is rich in nitrate …

Parametric Study Of Heavy Metal Partitioning In A Pilot Scale Incinerator Burning Simulated Municipal Solid Waste, Sukrut S. Thipse May 2001

Parametric Study Of Heavy Metal Partitioning In A Pilot Scale Incinerator Burning Simulated Municipal Solid Waste, Sukrut S. Thipse

Dissertations

Incineration is a combustion process used to convert toxic waste to benign gases and residue in presence of excess air. The products of the incineration process are bottom ash, fly ash and the flue gas. Most of the metal-based phases formed in incineration are toxic and their emissions need to be strictly controlled. Therefore, behavior of metal species during incineration must be well understood. Such understanding is possible based on the experimental identification of the metal phases formed in the waste combustion and determination of their concentration in various incineration products.

A pilot-scale incinerator of 140,000 Btu/hr capacity was constructed, …

Waqs : A Web-Based Approximate Query System, George Jyh-Shian Chang May 2001

Waqs : A Web-Based Approximate Query System, George Jyh-Shian Chang

Dissertations

The Web is often viewed as a gigantic database holding vast stores of information and provides ubiquitous accessibility to end-users. Since its inception, the Internet has experienced explosive growth both in the number of users and the amount of content available on it. However, searching for information on the Web has become increasingly difficult. Although query languages have long been part of database management systems, the standard query language being the Structural Query Language is not suitable for the Web content retrieval.

In this dissertation, a new technique for document retrieval on the Web is presented. This technique is designed …

Volume Change Behavior Of Clay Soils And The Effect On Discrete Fractures, Heather Ann Hall May 2001

Volume Change Behavior Of Clay Soils And The Effect On Discrete Fractures, Heather Ann Hall

Dissertations

This study examines the behavior of subsurface fractures in fine-grained soil such as clays in response to changing environmental conditions. Fractures serve as conduits for moisture transfer, which can lead to substantial shrinking and swelling of the surrounding fracture boundary soils. These volume changes, in turn, affect fracture geometry and moisture transmission rates. A new predictive model, termed the 'Fracture Volume Change Model' (FVC Model), has been developed to relate moisture transfer, soil volume change and associated changes in fracture aperture. The model assumes a discrete horizontal fracture in a laterally-infinite, saturated, expansive clay with rigid, outer no-flow boundaries and …

A Dynamical Model Of The Distributed Interaction Of Intracellular Signals, Adrienne C.N. James May 2001

A Dynamical Model Of The Distributed Interaction Of Intracellular Signals, Adrienne C.N. James

Dissertations

A major goal of modern cell biology is to understand the regulation of cell behavior in the reductive terms of all the molecular interactions. This aim is made explicit by the assertion that understanding a cell's response to stimuli requires a full inventory of details. Currently, no satisfactory explanation exists to explain why cells exhibit only a relatively small number of different behavioral modes.

In this thesis, a discrete dynamical model is developed to study interactions between certain types of signaling proteins. The model is generic and "connectionist" in nature and incorporates important concepts from the biology. The emphasis is …

Gated Multi-Cycle Integration (Gmci) For Focal Plane Array (Fpa) Applications, Haijiang Ou May 2001

Gated Multi-Cycle Integration (Gmci) For Focal Plane Array (Fpa) Applications, Haijiang Ou

Dissertations

In this thesis, the model and the theory of gated multi-cycle integration (GMCI) were first developed specifically for focal plane array dealing with repetitive or modulated image. The operational modes of GMCI include gated integration (GI), phase sensitive integration (PSI), multi-point summation, multi-point subtraction, multi-sample averaging and some of their combinations. Thus, the analytic theory of GMCI somehow unifies the theories of gated integration, phase sensitive detection, multiple summation and average. PSI works with background and/or dark current subtraction. As a result, the storage well of a pixel is mainly used for signal integration even if there exists a strong …

Predicting Thermodynamic And Transport Parameters For Metal Contaminant Sorption To Hydrated Metal Oxides In Aquatic Systems, Paras Trivedi May 2001

Predicting Thermodynamic And Transport Parameters For Metal Contaminant Sorption To Hydrated Metal Oxides In Aquatic Systems, Paras Trivedi

Dissertations

Hydrated oxides such as HAO,'HFO, goethite, and BA40 are prevalent in soils and sediments as discrete particles or as coatings. These microporous oxides have large surface areas and high affmity for metal ions, and hence they act as both a sink and a source for anthropogenically released metal contaminants. To better understand risks posed by metals in the environment and to develop effective waste management programs, mechanistic models are needed to accurately predict their fate in soils and sediments.

To achieve this objective, sorption of metal ions Sr, Cd, Zn, Ni, and Ca to these oxides were studied with macroscopic …

Adult Children With Developmental Disabilities: The Impact On The Mothers, Tracy J. E Mitchell

Theses and Graduate Projects

This qualitative study discussed and evaluated the affect adult children with developmental disabilities have upon their mothers. Extensive research has been done on children with disabilities and the impact upon their mothers, but little has been done regarding the adult children. Interviews were conducted with 5 mothers of adult children with developmental disabilities through the use of a snowball sample. The results indicated the mothers had mostly positive feelings towards their adult child. However, the study also found many of the mothers had unresolved grief issues regarding the raising of their adult child. The findings give implications to the social …

Effect Of A Single Amino Acid Change In Mhc Class I Molecules On The Rate Of Progression To Aids, Xiaojiang Gao, George W. Nelson, Peter Karacki, Maureen P. Martin, John Phair, Richard A. Kaslow, James J. Goedert, Susan Buchbinder, Keith Hoots, David Vlahov, Stephen J. O'Brien, Mary Carrington

Biology Faculty Articles

Background From studies of genetic polymorphisms and the rate of progression from human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), it appears that the strongest susceptibility is conferred by the major-histocompatibility-complex (MHC) class I type HLA-B*35,Cw*04 allele. However, cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses have been observed against HIV-1 epitopes presented by HLA-B*3501, the most common HLA-B*35 subtype. We examined subtypes of HLA-B*35 in five cohorts and analyzed the relation of structural differences between HLA-B*35 subtypes to the risk of progression to AIDS. Methods Genotyping of HLA class I loci was performed for 850 patients who seroconverted and …

Partial Characterization Of Extruded Collagen Tubes With Varied Material Deposition And Orientation Based On Rotation Rate And Linear Draw Speed, Richard Peter Hoppe

Theses

This study established protocols for extrusion of collagen tubes from an extruder made by the ZOKO Corporation of Czechoslovakia. Using a viscous collagen base material, collagen tubes can be formed with changes in rotation rates from 0 rpm to 260 rpm and linear draw speeds from 383 mm/min to 1270 mm/min with a constant extrusion rate of 50 cm2/min. These tubes, with further research and treatment, can be used for various medical applications including vascular implants and nerve conduits.

Post-extrusion, chemical crosslinking of the collagen increased the cohesiveness and mechanical integrity of the tubes. Microscopic photographs confirmed higher …

Benthic Communities In Spartina Alterniflora And Phragmites Australis Dominated Salt Marshes, Catherine E. Yuhas May 2001

Benthic Communities In Spartina Alterniflora And Phragmites Australis Dominated Salt Marshes, Catherine E. Yuhas

Theses

The benthic communities were investigated in Phragmites australis and Spartina altemiflora salt marshes, conducted in natural and mitigated salt marshes located in a highly urbanized area, the Hackensack Meadowlands, New Jersey. Benthic samples were taken with a 5-centimeter core at two habitats, the creek bank and the edge of the vegetation in the low marsh zone. Salinity levels and textural and structural sediment characteristics were also collected at each site. A recolonization experiment that utilized sediment from an undisturbed and uncontaminated salt marsh was conducted to determine if substrate is important in benthic colonization. The results suggest that there were …

Density Of Prairie Skinks (Eumeces Septentrionalis) In Old-Field Habitats, William C. Pitt May 2001

Density Of Prairie Skinks (Eumeces Septentrionalis) In Old-Field Habitats, William C. Pitt

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

From 1996–1998 I estimated the density of prairie skinks (Eumeces septentrionalis) in old fields and evaluated the influence of habitat characteristics on density. I estimated prairie skink density from a trapping grid using a mark-recapture method in seven old fields. For each field I estimated arthropod density, percent plant cover and recorded field age and if the field had been burned in the last 5 y. Arthropod density was highly variable among years and fields. Percent plant cover did not explain this variation, as it varied little among fields and years. Prairie skink density ranged from 58–206 adults …

Acidification-Induced Sensitization To Thermoradiotherapy In Breast Cancer, Dennis B. Leeper, L T. Komarnicky May 2001

Acidification-Induced Sensitization To Thermoradiotherapy In Breast Cancer, Dennis B. Leeper, L T. Komarnicky

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Hyperthermia is an extensively studied cytotoxic agent, with strong radio- and chemosensitizing potential. Recent positive clinical trials combining superficial or deep heating techniques with radiation therapy strongly support a role for hyperthermia as an adjuvant to radiation. Many in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that acute extracellular acidification will compromise fundamental protective cellular responses and enhance tumor response to hyperthermia and chemotherapy.

Breast cancers, like most other tumors, exhibit elevated levels of lactate production that provides a basis for selective acidification. A phase I/II clinical trial is underway to test the hypothesis that hyperglycemia-induced acute acidification will sensitize …
