Regulation Of Polymorphonuclear Leukocyte Function By Platelets, Khalil A. Aziz, Mirko Zuzel Jun 2001

Regulation Of Polymorphonuclear Leukocyte Function By Platelets, Khalil A. Aziz, Mirko Zuzel

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the full effect of platelet-derived constituents on various polymorphonuclear neutrophil leukocyte responses. METHODS: Polymorphonuclear neutrophil leukocytes and platelets were separated from fresh blood of normal healthy volunteers. Platelets were then stimulated partially, or maximally to release constituents of their a- or a- and dense granules. The effects of these constituents on polymorphonuclear neutrophil leukocyte function (oxidase activity, degranulation and migration) were investigated. RESULTS: Platelet-derived constituents were found to both enhance, and inhibit polymorphonuclear neutrophil leukocytes-oxidant production, depending on the incubation time. Enhancement was due to dense granule-derived nucleotides (adenosine diphosphate and adenosine diphosphate), while inhibition was due …

The Qualitative Report

Valid and reliable research is pivotal to successful sport marketing strategy. Market research may be gathered via either quantitative or qualitative means. This paper explores the theoretical background and practical applications of qualitative research techniques. It explains the appropriate context for qualitative approaches, and discusses sampling procedures with particular emphasis on the powerful but simple technique known as theoretical sampling. In addition, it clarifies and explores data analysis procedures. The purpose of this paper is to provide sport market research practitioners with a model for implementing qualitative methodologies in sport marketing campaigns.

A New Racial Threat In The New South? (A Conditional) Yes, Byron D’Andra Orey Jun 2001

A New Racial Threat In The New South? (A Conditional) Yes, Byron D’Andra Orey

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

This paper examines three competing hypotheses: racial threat, social contact and racial resentment. Using individual level and aggregate level data, these three hypotheses are tested by examining white racial attitudes, and a variety of contextual variables, on the prospective vote for a white racially conservative candidate. The evidence provides support for all three of these hypotheses. Racial threat is found to be conditioned by the black population density and the resentment that whites direct toward African Americans. The probability that a white person will support a racially conservative candidate does not depend solely on the black population. Indeed, it is …

Territorial Defense By Coyotes (Canis Latrans) In Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming: Who, How, Where, When, And Why, Eric M. Gese Jun 2001

Territorial Defense By Coyotes (Canis Latrans) In Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming: Who, How, Where, When, And Why, Eric M. Gese

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Territorial defense and maintenance are an important facet of the social ecology of most carnivore species. From January 1991 to June 1993, we observed 54 coyotes (Canis latrans) for 2507 h in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, during which we observed 112 instances of territory defense. The identity of the coyotes involved in challenging and evicting intruding animals was known. Alpha coyotes were most likely to be involved in territorial evictions of intruding animals, followed by beta individuals; pups participated little in territory defense. Coyotes evicting intruders generally had a numerical advantage when challenging the intruders. Territory-defense rates were …

Evaluation Of Mirrors To Deter Nesting Starlings, Thomas W. Seamans, Charles D. Lovell, Richard A. Dolbeer, Jonathon D. Cepek

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) nesting in buildings and other structures can cause health, nuisance, and safety problems. We evaluated effectiveness of flashing lights combined with mirrors, and mirrors alone, as deterrents for starlings nesting in starling nest boxes in northern Ohio, 1998-2000. Each year, 100 nest boxes attached to utility poles were randomly assigned equally among 4 treatments (including untreated boxes): 1998- mirrored (internally placed on the back and 2 side walls of nest boxes), mirrored with red-flashing lights, and mirrored with green-flashing lights; 1999-convex mirror above entrance hole, convex mirror at back of nest box, and flat …

Anindobothrium N. Gen. (Eucestoda: Tetraphyllidea) Inhabiting Marine And Freshwater Potamotrygonid Stingrays, Fernando P.L. Marques, Daniel R. Brooks, Carlos A. Lasso

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Anindobothrium n. gen. is proposed to accommodate Caulobothrium anacolum inhabiting Himantura schmardae from Colombia, and two new species, one inhabiting Potamotrygon orbigny in Brazil and the other inhabiting Paratrygon aereiba in Venezuela. Members of the new genus resemble members of Pararhinebothroides, Rhinebothroides, and Anthocephalum by having bothridia with poorly differentiated apical suckers and vasa deferentia expanded into external seminal vesicles. It further resembles Pararhinebothroides, Rhinebothroides, and Anthocephalum cairae by having vas deferens inserted near the poral rather than aporal end of the cirrus sac. The 3 species assigned to the new genus form an apparent monophyletic …

Parasite Systematics In The 21st Century: Opportunities And Obstacles, Daniel R. Brooks, Eric P. Hoberg Jun 2001

Parasite Systematics In The 21st Century: Opportunities And Obstacles, Daniel R. Brooks, Eric P. Hoberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Taxonomic names and phylogenetic hypotheses are indispensable tools for modern biological research, both basic and applied. Like all disciplines, parasitology suffers from the ‘taxonomic impediment’ – a global shortage of professional taxonomists and systematists. Only a fraction of the species of parasites on this planet have been identified, and the evolutionary relationships of only a minority of those are understood; thus, information on how to manage parasite biodiversity, including known and potential disease agents, is incomplete. A renewal of systematic parasitology has a key role in redefining the relationship between mankind and the organisms whose biology fascinates us so much.

Inhibition Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica By L-Leucinephosphonic Acid. Spectroscopic And Crystallographic Characterization Of The Transition State Of Peptide Hydrolysis, Carin Stamper, Brian Bennett, Tanya Edwards, Richard C. Holz, Dagmar Ringe, Gregory A. Petsko Jun 2001

Petsko

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

The nature of the interaction of the transition-state analogue inhibitor l-leucinephosphonic acid (LPA) with the leucine aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP) was investigated. LPA was shown to be a competitive inhibitor at pH 8.0 with a Ki of 6.6 μM. Electronic absorption spectra, recorded at pH 7.5 of [CoCo(AAP)], [CoZn(AAP)], and [ZnCo(AAP)] upon addition of LPA suggest that LPA interacts with both metal ions in the dinuclear active site. EPR studies on the Co(II)-substituted forms of AAP revealed that the environments of the Co(II) ions in both [CoZn(AAP)] and [ZnCo(AAP)] become highly asymmetric and constrained upon the addition of …

Networking Senescence-Regulating Pathways By Using Arabidopsis Enhancer Trap Lines, Yuehui He, Weining Tang, Johnnie D. Swain, Anthony L. Green, Thomas P. Jack, Susheng Gan Jun 2001

Networking Senescence-Regulating Pathways By Using Arabidopsis Enhancer Trap Lines, Yuehui He, Weining Tang, Johnnie D. Swain, Anthony L. Green, Thomas P. Jack, Susheng Gan

Dartmouth Scholarship

The last phase of leaf development, generally referred to as leaf senescence, is an integral part of plant development that involves massive programmed cell death. Due to a sharp decline of photosynthetic capacity in a leaf, senescence limits crop yield and forest plant biomass production. However, the biochemical components and regulatory mechanisms underlying leaf senescence are poorly characterized. Although several approaches such as differential cDNA screening, differential display, and cDNA subtraction have been employed to isolate senescence-associated genes (SAGs), only a limited number of SAGs have been identified, and information regarding the regulation of these genes is …

Characterizing And Calibrating A Large Helmholtz Coil At Low Ac Magnetic Field Levels With Peak Magnitudes Below The Earth's Magnetic Field, Robert A. Schill, Karin V. Hoff Jun 2001

Characterizing And Calibrating A Large Helmholtz Coil At Low Ac Magnetic Field Levels With Peak Magnitudes Below The Earth's Magnetic Field, Robert A. Schill, Karin V. Hoff

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Characterizing and calibrating a low impedance large Helmholtz coil generating 60 Hz magnetic fields with amplitudes well below the earth’s magnetic field is difficult and imprecise when coil shielding is not available and noise is an issue. Parameters influencing the calibration process such as temperature and coil impedance need to be figured in the calibration process. A simple and reliable calibration technique is developed and used to measure low amplitude fields over a spatial grid using a standard Hall effect probe gaussmeter. These low amplitude fields are typically hard or impossible to detect in the presence of background fields when …

Gang Affiliation In Adolescence And Attachment In Infancy, Joan E. Unis Jun 2001

Gang Affiliation In Adolescence And Attachment In Infancy, Joan E. Unis

Student Work

According to Attachment Theory (Bowlby, 1969, 1973, 1980), infants become attached to their primary caregiver for protection and security. Gang literature reports that individuals join gangs for the companionship and protection a gang can offer (Hochhaus & Sousa, 1987-88; Friedman, Mann, & Friedman, 1975). The aim of this present study was to examine the proposition that individuals who eventually become gang members in adolescence have an insecure attachment to caregivers, a secure attachment to peers, and will have lower scores on constructs related to attachment. The participants in this study were 90 individuals, divided equally into gang and non-gang members. …

Biracial Sensitive Practice: Expanding Social Services To An Invisible Population, Ronald E. Hall Jun 2001

Biracial Sensitive Practice: Expanding Social Services To An Invisible Population, Ronald E. Hall

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although literature acknowledges the existence of a biracial population, there has been minimal discussion of the differences indicative of biracial clients and how these differences impact provision of services. Too frequently, race criterion has been utilized to categorize biracial clients resulting in an all but invisible population. A biracial individual may then assume a multiplicity of identities including African-, Asian-, Latino- and Native-American, when negotiating with macro institutions including social services. As an alternative to racial paradigms, identity across the lifespan is suggested as a more comprehensive model for biracial clients. In the aftermath said clients will be rendered visible …

For the actual study, six parents participated in individual, in-depth tape-recorded interviews. Each interview was transcribed, thematically analyzed, and revealed seven predominant themes including (a) constant vigil, (b) effects on marriages, (c) child management, (d) parental issues, (e) interactions with professional community, (f) emancipation concerns, and (g) medical implications. The ways in which family counselors can intervene are reviewed and include the role of clinician, …

Lies, Damn Lies And Public Protection: Corporate Responsibility And Breast Cancer Activism, Laura Potts Jun 2001

Lies, Damn Lies And Public Protection: Corporate Responsibility And Breast Cancer Activism, Laura Potts

Journal of International Women's Studies

Introduction:

The first world conference on breast cancer, held in Kingston, Ontario, in July 1997, provided a unique opportunity for activists, concerned about the possible links between breast cancer and the environment, to share their concerns in an international forum, with oncologists, radiologists, epidemiologists, survivors and alternative therapists. It also clearly exposed the fracture lines between competing discourses of risk and responsibility, between groups charged with a duty to protect and to care - health professionals, epidemiologists, statutory bodies, and those taking on those duties - generally activists, from environmental, feminist and survivor groups. These lines were even more clearly …

Roots Of Identity: The National And Cultural Self In Présence Africaine, Marga Graf Jun 2001

Roots Of Identity: The National And Cultural Self In Présence Africaine, Marga Graf

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Roots of Identity: The National and Cultural Self in Présence Africaine," Marga Graf investigates some of the difficulties African, American, Brazilian, and Caribbean Blacks of the mid-twentieth century encountered in their attempts to voice their cultural and racial self-understanding, a self-understanding struggling to a large extent to challenge the established dichotomy between black racial inferiority versus white superiority. After the Second World War, black intellectuals meeting at the Sorbonne in Paris founded the journal Présence Africaine, a journal that became the voice of blacks investigating their history and culture throughout the different regions of Africa as well …

The Environmental Duties Of Public Utilities Commissions, Michael Dworkin, David Farnsworth, Jason Rich Jun 2001

The Environmental Duties Of Public Utilities Commissions, Michael Dworkin, David Farnsworth, Jason Rich

Pace Environmental Law Review

In addition to being economic regulators, most state utility commissions are vested with an obligation to protect the environment. The authors explore the various forms of this authority, and conclude that they preclude some commissions, but require most public utility commissions to make decisions with environmental costs in mind.

Oregon Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan, Erik Hanson, Mark Sytsma Jun 2001

Oregon Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan, Erik Hanson, Mark Sytsma

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) are a serious problem in Oregon. There are currently over 134 nonindigenous aquatic species reported in Oregon. More species are expected to arrive. Current state activities and authorities address some ANS, their prevention, and control. Yet, the activities are not coordinated or comprehensively managing the impacts of ANS. The importance of Oregon’s aquatic resources requires a coherent response to the threat posed by ANS. This management plan is the initial step in establishing a program in Oregon to specifically address ANS issues.

Covenantal Ethics: A Living System For Living Systems, Matthew D. Viel Jun 2001

Covenantal Ethics: A Living System For Living Systems, Matthew D. Viel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Covenantal ethics is a living system for living systems. We humans are not simple, isolated individuals living stagnant, dead lives. Rather we are immersed in a complex system of living, glowing and developing interpersonal relationships with others. Philosophy in general and ethics in particular are often looked upon as dead or dormant entities. Covenantal ethics is neither. It is a living approach to the philosophy of ethics that recognizes the dynamic system in which we live. Our world recently welcomed a new millennium. We moved forward, leaving behind much of the old and eagerly anticipating what was to come. One …

Il-2 And Antisense Tgf-B1 Gene Therapy Of The H238 Tumor And Analysis Of Tgf-B Receptors, Azim Moiz Mohamedali Jun 2001

Il-2 And Antisense Tgf-B1 Gene Therapy Of The H238 Tumor And Analysis Of Tgf-B Receptors, Azim Moiz Mohamedali

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-p) belongs to a family of immunosuppressive cytokines, capable of regulating macrophages, T, B and NK cells. We have detected the TGF-p transcript being synthesized by H238 cells. This is herpes simplex-Type2 transformed murine fibrosarcoma cell line. The amount of TGF-p formed/106 cells was >2000pg/ml. Previous attempts to control H238 tumorigenicity had sub-optimal efficacies. In addition, studies had shown that the FI238 cell line was not responsive to TGF-p. This project was an attempt to develop an improved modality to reduce H238 tumorigenicity and investigate potential abnormalities in expression of TGF-p receptors in the H238 cell line. …

Effect Of Relaxation On Neuro-Immune Responses Of Persons Undergoing Chemotherapy, Patricia K. Taylor Pothier Phd, Ms, Rn Jun 2001

Effect Of Relaxation On Neuro-Immune Responses Of Persons Undergoing Chemotherapy, Patricia K. Taylor Pothier Phd, Ms, Rn

Dissertations

Chemotherapy can be considered both a physiologic and a psychological stressor. Anxiety, nausea, emesis, and immunosuppression are commonly associated with chemotherapy, and may adversely affect the outcome or the process of treatment. Chemotherapy-related anxiety can exacerbate negative side-effects. Some psychological stressors, such as anxiety, can result in down-regulation of certain immune functions. Studies have demonstrated that behavioral interventions, such as specific relaxation strategies, can modify stress-related immune modulation. These behavioral interventions have also been shown to decrease the degree of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy. The purpose of this study was to examine whether a relaxation intervention would result …
