A Demographic Approach To Race And Ethnicity In Metropolitan And Non-Metropolitan Regions Of Arkansas, 1990 And 1999, Todd W. Hodgson, Frank L. Farmer, Wayne P. Miller, Donald D. Voth

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

This manuscript provides an empirical portrait of emergent trends in the growth, distribution, and racial and ethnic composition of Arkansas’ resident population. Particular attention is given to variation in the racial and ethnic composition of the estimated population among different regions of the state. During the 1990’s, racial and ethnic diversity increased statewide due in large part to Hispanic population growth in all regions. Black population growth was greatest in central Arkansas while Asian and Native American population growth increased most rapidly in the northwest metropolitan regions of the state. Overall, both metropolitan and non-metropolitan Arkansas communities have a more …

The Chinese At Work : Collectivism Or Individualism?, Yui Tim, Edward Wong Feb 2001

The Chinese At Work : Collectivism Or Individualism?, Yui Tim, Edward Wong

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

One of the significant features of the national culture of the Chinese in China and other Chinese-majority societies is “collectivism” or “low individualism” (Hofstede, 1984; Hofstede and Bond, 1988; Hofstede, 1993). Does it imply that the Chinese at work are collective subjects, with “group orientation”? Different people may have different views on this question. This paper challenges such popular assumptions about Chinese work behavior of “collectivism”. Drawing on studies from P.R.C., Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, it questions whether the logic of Chinese Confucian collectivism, prevailing in traditional Chinese family, still applies in today’s work organization. Based on the studies …

Treatment Of Choice Or A Last Resort? A Review Of Residential Mental Health Placements For Children And Adolescents, Karen Frensch, Gary Cameron, Gerald R. Adams Feb 2001

Treatment Of Choice Or A Last Resort? A Review Of Residential Mental Health Placements For Children And Adolescents, Karen Frensch, Gary Cameron, Gerald R. Adams

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Residential treatment is often regarded as a treatment of ‘last resort’ and, increasingly, residential treatment programs are being asked to address the needs of very troubled children and adolescents. This paper is an effort to summarize what is currently known about the effects of residential treatment for children and adolescents. The review is organized into two sections: studies of the effectiveness of group home residential treatment and studies of the effectiveness of residential treatment delivered in residential treatment centres. In both areas, we attempt to identify trends within treatment, as well as patterns found in the literature that characterize post …

The Strategy In The Use Of Contingent Workers In Hong Kong : Case Studies In Retail Firms, Mei Ling, May Wong Feb 2001

The Strategy In The Use Of Contingent Workers In Hong Kong : Case Studies In Retail Firms, Mei Ling, May Wong

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

The research studies the strategy in the use of contingent employment in four retail firms - three Japanese and one British - in Hong Kong under different economic conditions, and the purposes of the use of contingent employment. From the data of in-depth qualitative case studies, it is found that the four case firms had different organisational responses to the economic conditions from the increase of sales before the Asian financial crisis and the shrinkage of sales after the crisis, notwithstanding these firms face similar contextual environment of Hong Kong. One of such responses is the companies ' employment policies …

The Corporate Defamation Plaintiff In The Era Of Slapps: Revisiting New York Times V. Sullivan, D. Mark Jackson Feb 2001

The Corporate Defamation Plaintiff In The Era Of Slapps: Revisiting New York Times V. Sullivan, D. Mark Jackson

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Corporations have increasingly used defamation suits as an offensive weapon. Many of these suits may be defined as SLAPP suits-Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation. These suits, often meritless, are designed to harass and silence a corporations' critics. Following a survey oft he history of defamation law and the protection of free speech, this Note argues that corporations should be treated as per se public figures in defamation suits. This derives from the uniquely public nature of a corporation and an assumption of the risk of defamatory falsehoods that arises from the act of incorporation.Treating corporations in this manner would place …

Brief 5: For Funders Of Multi-Institutional Collaborations In Higher Education: Support Partnership Building, New England Resource Center For Higher Education, University Of Massachusetts Boston

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

This brief was derived from the discussions of NERCHE’s think tank for coordinators of GEAR UP school-college partnerships. The insights of these coordinators point to the principle that it is the quality of the relationships among the partners that determines the effectiveness of multi-institutional collaborations. This means then that those who support and invest in multi-institutional collaborations should also focus on supporting the process of partnership building. But what does this mean in practical terms? It means being strategic right from the beginning in the design of grant structures, and throughout the relationship with the grantees. This brief provides examples …

The Role Of Microsimulation In Longitudinal Data Analysis, Douglas A. Wolf Feb 2001

The Role Of Microsimulation In Longitudinal Data Analysis, Douglas A. Wolf

Center for Policy Research

The term “microsimulation” has been linked to a range of tools and techniques that are finding growing use in empirical social science applications. This paper considers one such area, namely the potential for microsimulation to serve the needs of the data analyst, in contrast to the more common use of microsimulation by the model user. Furthermore, the focus is on longitudinal rather than cross-sectional data analysis. The paper identifies several types of longitudinal data modeling approaches in which microsimulation is particularly relevant, suggesting algorithms with which to conduct such microsimulations. Microsimulation can be used to extend the range of inferences …

Self-Organized Critical & Complex Adaptive Systems In A Simulated Manufacturing Environment, Kaine Gill Feb 2001

Self-Organized Critical & Complex Adaptive Systems In A Simulated Manufacturing Environment, Kaine Gill

Theses

The application of this thesis compares three different manufacturing theories, varying on resource allocation, to decide which performs best. Three Resource Allocation methods are analyzed including a static resource allocation method, a semidynamic resource allocation method, and a dynamic resource allocation method. The last methodology used in this thesis develops a resource allocation method intended to display complex behavior. A Base Case manufacturing simulation is developed to represent a static resource allocation system. A Theory of Constraints manufacturing model using the Theory of Constraints process represents a semi-dynamic resource allocation system. A Complex Adaptive System manufacturing model using autonomous agents …
