Virtual Worlds: A First-Hand Account Of Market And Society On The Cyberian Frontier, Edward Castronova Nov 2001

Virtual Worlds: A First-Hand Account Of Market And Society On The Cyberian Frontier, Edward Castronova

The Gruter Institute Working Papers on Law, Economics, and Evolutionary Biology

Having just returned from a dangerous exploratory journey through this new world, I can report a number of interesting findings about its people and economy. About 12,000 people call it their permanent home, although some 60,000 are present there at any given time. The nominal hourly wage is about $3.42 per hour, and the labors of the people produce a GNP per capita somewhere between that of Russia and Bulgaria. A unit of Norrath's currency is traded on exchange …

The Holocaust, Gulag, And Sociology: Why Is There Less Scholarly Interest In The Soviet Repressive System?, Rachel Schroeder Nov 2001

The Holocaust, Gulag, And Sociology: Why Is There Less Scholarly Interest In The Soviet Repressive System?, Rachel Schroeder

Honors Theses

The Soviet Gulag and the Holocaust are two formative events that claimed millions of victims in the twentieth century; however, the Gulag has received markedly less interest from scholars. It explores the scale and dimensions of the discrepancy through a comparative analysis of a Gulag bibliography and a Holocaust bibliography. The paper also offers a response to the question of why the discrepancy exists by inquiring into the …

Examining The American Bar Association's Ratings Of Nominees To The U.S. Courts Of Appeals For Political Bias, 1989-2000, James T. Lindgren Nov 2001

Examining The American Bar Association's Ratings Of Nominees To The U.S. Courts Of Appeals For Political Bias, 1989-2000, James T. Lindgren

Public Law and Legal Theory Papers

Yet this is not a simple story of apparent ABA bias toward Clinton nominees. Among confirmed nominees with the most important credential - prior judicial experience - Bush nominees fare roughly as well and sometimes even better than Clinton nominees. The problem arises for those without judicial experience. Here …
