Women In Public Middle School Administration In Georgia: A Feminist Analysis Of The Perceptions Of Women In Power, Karen L. Doty Jan 2001

Women In Public Middle School Administration In Georgia: A Feminist Analysis Of The Perceptions Of Women In Power, Karen L. Doty

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

The field of educational leadership is currently experiencing an era of educational change. Women who work in primarily male-dominated careers as principals of middle schools have experienced a variety of complex issues related to their leadership roles and their gender roles. There has been a notable increase in the number of female principals in Georgia, and in the nation, therefore the role of the principal was studied to determine how much this role has changed. Feminist standpoint theory was used to provide different insights and perspectives about the problem of marginalization of women in educational administration. Georgia middle school principals …

The Relationship Between Jealousy And Self-Esteem In Collegiate Athletes, Paula M. Parker Jan 2001

The Relationship Between Jealousy And Self-Esteem In Collegiate Athletes, Paula M. Parker

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Previous research has found contradictory results when examining the possible relationship between jealousy and self-esteem (Guerrero & Afifi, 1998, Mathes & Severa, 1981; Mikulincer, Bizman, & Aizenberg, 1989, Peretti & Pudowski, 1997; Stewart & Beatty, 1985; White, 1981). Jealousy has been most often researched in romantic relationships (Peretti & Pudowski, 1997; Salovey & Rodin, 1986) and social comparison situations (Bers & Rodin, 1984, Mikulincer, Bizman, & .Aizenberg, 1989). Few studies have examined jealousy in an athletic setting. Sport jealousy has received little attention because until recently, there was no reliable instrument to measure jealousy in sport. Pease (1987) investigated the …

An Investigation Of Captive Florida Manatee (Trichecus Manatus Latirostris) Behavior And Social Interactions, Jennifer Sadler Young Jan 2001

An Investigation Of Captive Florida Manatee (Trichecus Manatus Latirostris) Behavior And Social Interactions, Jennifer Sadler Young

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Human impacts such as pollution, habitat alteration, and boating have caused many injuries and deaths of the Florida manatee, Trichechus manutus latirostris. Rehabilitation centers have been established in Florida to help return sick or injured manatees back to the wild. Manatees that are released back to the wild after undergoing rehabilitation in captivity might lose some of their abilities to survive in the wild. A factor that might alter behavior in captive individuals was examined by determining if length of time spent in captivity influenced the behavior of manatees during rehabilitation. Even though all facilities follow similar guidelines, invariable …

An Econometric Look At Inefficiency Among Us States, 1977-1986, Gregory J. Brock Jan 2001

An Econometric Look At Inefficiency Among Us States, 1977-1986, Gregory J. Brock

Economics: Faculty Publications

U.S. states during the 1977-1986 business cycle are found to have small but significant technical inefficiency in the private sector. Inefficiency is influenced by several factors, including prior economic performance, location, Hicks labor augmenting technical progress in the manufacturing sector in an earlier 1970s period, college graduation, and income inequality. The existence of a monetary channel, urban agglomeration, and a high school diploma "sheepskin" effect for improved technical efficiency are rejected. Results from earlier studies using noneconometric methods to measure technical efficiency are independently confirmed, indicating that interstate technical inefficiency exists and can be measured using both parametric and nonparametric …

Related Enzymatic Activities In Solid-Substrate Fermentation Of Sago Hampas With Pycnoporus Sanguineus, Rifat Ara Matta

Student Works (2000-2009)

Solid substrate fermentation (SSF) of sago pith residue known as 'hampas' with Pycnoporus sanguineus for enzyme production was carried out. Good growth of Pycnoporus sanguineus in SSF was noted on 'hampas' supplemented with 0.38% urea, 0.2% KH₂PO₄ and 0.05% MgSO₄·7H₂O over a period of 30 days. Xylanase, lignin peroxidase and laccase activities were detected in Pycnoporus sanguineus cultures. Maximum xylanase and laccase activities of 5.26U/g of substrate on day 10 of SSF and 14.35U/g on day 15 of SSF of substrate were obtained respectively. The lignin peroxidase activity was less pronounced with an activity of 1.31 U/g of substrate on …

The Effects Of Incorporation Of Polyethylene Glycol On Properties Of Silica-Carbon Black-Filled Rubber Compound, Yoke Cheng Tang Jan 2001

The Effects Of Incorporation Of Polyethylene Glycol On Properties Of Silica-Carbon Black-Filled Rubber Compound, Yoke Cheng Tang

Student Works (2000-2009)

The use of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to modify the surface of precipitated silica by means of physical adsorption was investigated. The effects of adding PEG on processing, cure and physical properties of a silica-carbon black-filled natural rubber truck tread compound were examined. For each series of investigation, two sets of experiments were conducted. Set I was to check the effects of both physical adsorption due to PEG and chemical modification due to a silane coupling agent, Si-69 on the surface of silica. Set 2 was to check the effects of physical adsorption due to PEG alone on the surface of …

A study was carried out to determine the physico-chemical treatment of the wastewater collected from a soap and detergent factory in Selangor, Malaysia. The study was initiated by determining the characteristics of the wastewater. Treatability studies involving coagulation and flocculation were determined by the jar test method. The parameters of interest were coagulant dosage, pH, mixing intensity, mixing time and settling time. The coagulants were restricted to alum and ferric sulfate and coagulant aids utilized were polyvinyl alcohol, sodium alginate and polycthylcninimine. An extended evaluation to determine the effect of double chemical treatment was also carried out with the most …

The Importance Of Early Successional Habitats To Rare, Restricted-Range, And Endangered Birds In The Ecuadorian Andes, Mark R. Welford Jan 2001

The Importance Of Early Successional Habitats To Rare, Restricted-Range, And Endangered Birds In The Ecuadorian Andes, Mark R. Welford

Earth, Environment & Sustainability: Faculty Publications

Since the mid-1980s, exhausted pastures in Ecuador have been increasingly abandoned, allowing forest regeneration. At approximately 2,200 m in the Tandayapa valley I surveyed four abandoned pastures to evaluate their use by birds. Each former pasture represented a different age of vegetation maturity. The number of bird species recorded in each successively older abandoned pasture increased but only half the number of species recorded in the undisturbed forest site was recorded in the most mature pasture. However, at least four restricted-range bird species were recorded in a single pasture. As pastures rapidly convert to secondary forest, more bird species and …

Epstein-Barr Virus Serology In The Diagnosis Of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma From Sarawak, Madeline Wong Mei Fong Jan 2001

Epstein-Barr Virus Serology In The Diagnosis Of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma From Sarawak, Madeline Wong Mei Fong

Student Works (2000-2009)

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is closely associated with nasopharyngcal carcinoma (NPC). The role(s) of EBV in NPC remains unclear but antibodies to two EBV proteins namely the viral capsid antigen (VCA) and early antigen (EA), are clinically useful diagnostic markers of NPC. The NPC scenario in Malaysia has been based on studies done on West Malaysian patients but not much has been described for NPC in Sarawak, East Malaysia. In this study, 164 NPC sera from newly histologically confirmed NPC patients were collected from the Radiotherapy Unit of Kuching General Hospital, Sarawak prior to radiotherapy. One hundred and forty seven …

The Bakaly Debacle: The Role Of The Press In High-Profile Criminal Investigations, Julie R. O'Sullivan Jan 2001

The Bakaly Debacle: The Role Of The Press In High-Profile Criminal Investigations, Julie R. O'Sullivan

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Others have examined why prosecutors or law enforcement agents may be inclined to "leak" information regarding ongoing criminal investigations, documented the rules that govern federal prosecutors' interaction with the press in such circumstances, outlined the difficulties encountered in enforcing those rules, and critiqued the performance of Mr. Starr's office in this regard. In other words, the dynamic as it flows from governmental actors to the press has been scrutinized. I would like to suggest that a more searching examination be conducted of the press's role, and perhaps its responsibilities, in this context. Because I am neither a journalist nor a …

Constitution-Talk And Justice-Talk, Mark V. Tushnet Jan 2001

Constitution-Talk And Justice-Talk, Mark V. Tushnet

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Inside the courts, one might distinguish between constitution-talk and justice-talk on the ground that the former, but not the latter, results in enforceable legal judgments. So, inside the courts, we might interpret the Constitution with justice in mind, but what we do is produce legally enforceable judgments. Outside the courts, however, it might seem that all we do is interpret and talk. It is not immediately obvious that cloaking justice-talk as constitution-talk outside the courts has much rhetorical force. As I will argue, the fact that invoking the Constitution outside the courts, in the course of discussing justice, does have …

Federalism And International Human Rights In The New Constitutional Order, Mark V. Tushnet Jan 2001

Federalism And International Human Rights In The New Constitutional Order, Mark V. Tushnet

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This Essay examines the contours of what I have elsewhere called the new constitutional order with respect to international human rights and federalism. The background is my suggestion that the U.S. political-constitutional system is on the verge of moving into a new constitutional regime, following the end of the New Deal-Great Society constitutional regime. The Supreme Court's innovations in the law of federalism in connection with Congress's exercise of its powers over domestic affairs has provoked speculation about the implications of those innovations for the national government's power with respect to foreign affairs. Most of the speculation has been that …

"Shut Up He Explained", Mark V. Tushnet Jan 2001

"Shut Up He Explained", Mark V. Tushnet

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Part I of this Commentary examines the conversational model of politics. I argue that the virtues Bennett finds in the conversational model exist only when, and to the extent that, participants in civil and political society can engage in undominated conversation. The requirement that conversation be undominated generates a substantial set of social prerequisites, mostly dealing with equality. And yet, determining what social arrangements actually satisfy those prerequisites is itself a matter of constitutional controversy. Resolving such controversies through politics is no solution, because the political arena is where we seek to ensure that nondomination prevails in civil society, and, …

Two Views Of The River: A Critique Of The Liberal Defense Of Affirmative Action, Charles R. Lawrence Iii Jan 2001

Two Views Of The River: A Critique Of The Liberal Defense Of Affirmative Action, Charles R. Lawrence Iii

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In response to the attack on affirmative action at educational institutions, the argument that the benefits of diversity necessitate keeping affirmative action has emerged as the dominant defense of race-conscious admissions policies. Describing this argument as the “liberal defense of affirmative action,” Professor Lawrence critiques the liberal defense because it fails to challenge the manner in which traditional standards of merit perpetuate race and class privilege, and pushes aside more radically, substantive defenses of affirmative action which articulate the need to remedy past and ongoing discrimination. While recognizing the difficulties and ambivalence inherent in advancing a new vision for defending …

Open Access And The First Amendment: A Critique Of Comcast Cablevision Of Broward County, Inc. V. Broward County, David Wolitz Jan 2001

Open Access And The First Amendment: A Critique Of Comcast Cablevision Of Broward County, Inc. V. Broward County, David Wolitz

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

To what extent does the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment bar the adoption of “open access” regulations? Open access (or “net neutrality”) refers to a policy that would require broadband Internet providers, such as cable and phone companies, to allow competitive Internet Service Providers (ISPs) onto their broadband lines at nondiscriminatory rates. A federal district court in Florida recently held Broward County’s open access ordinance unconstitutional on the grounds that it would force speech – in the form of Internet content – on to the local cable company. If the district court’s analysis is correct, then open access …

The Influence Of Family And Community Ties On The Demand For Home Equity Conversion Mortgages, Kenneth Allen Knapp Jan 2001

The Influence Of Family And Community Ties On The Demand For Home Equity Conversion Mortgages, Kenneth Allen Knapp

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Reverse mortgages are loans against home equity that do not have to be repaid until the borrower moves, sells the home, or dies. The loans generally are available only to older homeowners, usually aged 62 or over. This paper explores whether demand for reverse mortgages is influenced by the strength of area’s family and community ties. One type of reverse mortgage is analyzed: the FHA-insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM). Several researchers have estimated the potential demand for reverse mortgages. To my knowledge, this is the first study of how actual demand may be determined, and of how it may …

Mechanisms Of Cd4 + T Cell Apoptosis And The Role Of Ethanol As A Cofactor In Hiv Pathogenesis, Qing Dong Jan 2001

Mechanisms Of Cd4 + T Cell Apoptosis And The Role Of Ethanol As A Cofactor In Hiv Pathogenesis, Qing Dong

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was first reported in the United States in 1981 and has since become a major worldwide epidemic. The typical course of HIV disease begins with a primary infection followed by a relatively long latency phase and finally ends in the advance phase also called AIDS. There are two aspects considered the most important in HIV pathogenesis, namely viral replication and CD4 + T cell depletion. During the latency phase, tumor necrosis factor (TNF ) has been shown to play a predominant role in HIV-1 replication and disease progression. Since ethanol is also an important risk factor …

Crime Legends In Old And New Media, Pamela Donovan Jan 2001

Crime Legends In Old And New Media, Pamela Donovan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This project explores the contemporary meanings and persistence of the "crime legend." A case study approach was used: three crime legends with a considerable history of public debunking were chosen. These cases were: the market in snuff films, the theft of vital organs for black-market transplant, and the abduction of children from theme park restrooms. Current versions circulating in Internet newsgroups and via electronic mail lists were collected. Discussions in Internet newsgroups were examined and twenty regular newsgroup participants were interviewed. The public newsgroup communication environment is such that salience is established by the interlocutors themselves, rather than by the …

The Influence Of An Active Postvention On The Length Of Time Elapsed Before Survivors Of Suicide Seek Treatment., Frank Ray Campbell Jan 2001

The Influence Of An Active Postvention On The Length Of Time Elapsed Before Survivors Of Suicide Seek Treatment., Frank Ray Campbell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Those who are significantly impacted by the death of someone to suicide are known as survivors of suicide. This study examined two groups of suicide survivors, one group received an active postvention model (APM), and the other group received no active postvention model. The study utilized both t-test and chi-square to compare the groups based on key demographic characteristics. The study compared model of postvention (active versus passive) for the time elapsed between the suicide and the survivors seeking treatment. The two groups studied were survivors who sought treatment at a well established metropolitan crisis intervention center in the southern …

Some Technical Vocabulary Of Rhetorical Invention In The Treatise Of Anonymous Seguerianus, Hermogenes' "On Statis", And Book Three Of The [Pseudo-]Hermogenic Work "On Invention", Mark Allen Williams Jan 2001

Some Technical Vocabulary Of Rhetorical Invention In The Treatise Of Anonymous Seguerianus, Hermogenes' "On Statis", And Book Three Of The [Pseudo-]Hermogenic Work "On Invention", Mark Allen Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

From the debates of the Christian councils to the homilies of the local priests, from the opaque scripting of the Byzantine epistle to the clarities of stasis theory, from the entertaining fictions of declamation to the promulgation of Byzantine cannon law, the citizens of Byzantium were never far from the rhetorical, and they themselves knew it. But the development of rhetorical theory in the Greek West has gained little attention, and what has been given to it has generally concentrated on questions of style. This dissertation examines some of the most basic qualities of that theory of rhetorical invention which …

An Economic Analysis Of The Allocation Of Research Funding At The National Institutes Of Health., Janet B. Daniel Jan 2001

An Economic Analysis Of The Allocation Of Research Funding At The National Institutes Of Health., Janet B. Daniel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Our model examines the allocation of medical research funds at the National Institutes of Health using public interest theory, incremental budgeting theory, and special interest group theory. We use the allocation of research funds among various diseases and measures of the burden of disease on the population to test the hypothesis that the N.I.H. is allocating funds on a pure public interest basis, to test for incremental budgeting effects, and to test for the influence of lobbying and other political variables representing special interest groups. We use pooled cross-sectional, time-series data in a one-way fixed effects model, and also use …

An Introduction To Jacques Leguerney's Settings Of The Poetry Of Pierre De Ronsard., Carol Fuqua Lines Jan 2001

An Introduction To Jacques Leguerney's Settings Of The Poetry Of Pierre De Ronsard., Carol Fuqua Lines

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Jacques Leguerney, French composer who lived from 1906--1997, is at last gaining a much-deserved place in the history of the French melodie. Primarily a composer of melodie, Leguerney was strongly drawn to the poetry of the French Renaissance, with more than one-third of his songs utilizing the poetry of members of the French Renaissance School known as La Pleiade, founded by poet Pierre de Ronsard. Ronsard's poetry is found in the majority of Leguerney's Pleiade settings, of which ten are presented in this study. The ten selections are: Je vous envoie, Genievres Herisses, Je me lamente, Bel aubepin, Si mille …

Effects Of Lipids, Amino Acids, And Beta-Cyclodextrin On Gelatinization, Pasting, And Retrogradation Properties Of Rice Starch., Xiaoming Liang Jan 2001

Effects Of Lipids, Amino Acids, And Beta-Cyclodextrin On Gelatinization, Pasting, And Retrogradation Properties Of Rice Starch., Xiaoming Liang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the addition of lipids, amino acids, and beta-cyclodextrin effects on commercial rice starch gelatinization, pasting, and retrogradation properties by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rapid visco analysis (RVA), and x-ray diffractometry (XRD). Analyses from commercial rice starch showed that the presence of 0.6% monopalmitin (MP) increased the peak viscosity (PV), minimum viscosity (MV), and final viscosity (FV) by 38, 27, and 72 RVU respectively. The pasting temperature was also increased by 6°C, whereas the total setback (TSB) was increased by 45 RVU. Incorporation of lysophosphatidylcholine (LC) and lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LE) also showed …

Effects Of Nitric Oxide Synthase Inhibitors On Equine And Bovine Follicular Dynamics And Steroidogenesis., Carlos Roberto Fontes Pinto Jan 2001

Effects Of Nitric Oxide Synthase Inhibitors On Equine And Bovine Follicular Dynamics And Steroidogenesis., Carlos Roberto Fontes Pinto

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current scientific literature has shown that: (1) NO is a pro-ovulatory agent and inhibition of its production inhibits ovulation, and (2) NO has strong antisteroidogenic activity, especially on estradiol (E2) production by granulosa cells. The experiments described in this dissertation were designed to answer the following questions involving effects of NO on ovarian physiology: (1) is the inhibitory effect of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors on ovulation irreversible (follicular atresia) or temporary (delayed ovulation)? and (2) what is the relationship between NO and hCG-induced preovulatory luteinization? Accordingly, cycling mares were subjected to treatment with NOS inhibitors (L-NAME or aminoguanidine) during …

"A New Town Will Appear On Charleston Neck": North Charleston And The Creation Of The New South Garden City., Dean Thrift Sinclair Jan 2001

"A New Town Will Appear On Charleston Neck": North Charleston And The Creation Of The New South Garden City., Dean Thrift Sinclair

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1912, five residents of Charleston, South Carolina purchased 5,000 acres of land in the area called "the Neck," a marshy and pestilential portion of the peninsula connecting the City of Charleston with the balance of South Carolina. On this property these leaders, tied to the progressive spirit sweeping America and the effort to create the New South, planned a new city called North Charleston. The 1,000-acre city was to be a complete community, with industrial, commercial, and residential activities to serve a population of 30,000 residents. An adjacent 4,000-acre tract was planned as an agricultural development to revitalize farming …
