Toward A New Theory Of The Shareholder Role: A Sacred Space In Corporate Transactions, Robert B. Thompson, D. Gordon Smith Dec 2001

Toward A New Theory Of The Shareholder Role: A Sacred Space In Corporate Transactions, Robert B. Thompson, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Scholarship

Corporate law expresses a profound ambiguity toward the role of shareholders. Courts announce that shareholders are critical to the theory that legitimates the exercise of power - by directors and officers over vast aggregations of property that they do not own. At the same time shareholders have a very difficult time actually making any corporate decisions. In this Article, we strive to define a new role for shareholders by drawing on economic theories of the firm and the structure of corporate law. More particularly we examine the role of shareholders in hostile corporate takeovers, the area where the interests of …

World Maritime University Dissertations

The adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982, constituted the major political and legal achievement that the International community has ever achieved, regarding the uses of the sea. It is considered as the Constitution of the Oceans binding upon all States, whether they are party or not to the Convention, as part of the current customary international law. Countries holding unilateral positions in this regard are every day less accepted and supported by the international community as a whole. The fundamentals of the 200nm thesis are now part of the main legal regimes …

Britton, Alexander Macdonald, Thomas M. Primus, Margaret J. Goodall, Christi A. Yoder, Lowell A. Miller, Kathleen A. Fagerstone

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Urbanization and associated landscaping has increased the abundance of year-round habitat for waterfowl, resulting in vegetation damage, loss of recreational activities, air transportation mishaps and health hazards. As part of a research program to develop socially acceptable techniques for management of pest bird populations, we are evaluating nicarbazin as a contraceptive in pest and surrogate avian species. As reproductive studies with Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) are tedious due to the difficulty of conducting controlled field studies and/or breeding geese in captivity, we evaluated the effects of oral nicarbazin administration on the production and hatchability of chicken studies are …

Tailoring Harmonic Radiation To Different Applications Using A Genetic Algorithm, L. Roos, M. B. Gaarde, A. L'Huillier

Faculty Publications

We use a genetic algorithm to theoretically optimize several properties of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation, generated as high-order harmonics in xenon and argon. We maximize the harmonic pulse energy, minimize the pulse duration or optimize the temporal coherence by varying at the same time two or three parameters that are easily accessible in experiments, related to the characteristics of the laser beam and the nonlinear medium. For the 15th and 29th harmonics in argon, we find up to 109 photons per pulse, and pulse durations as short as 6 fs generated by a 50 fs laser pulse. We can also …
