Multimode Quantitative Scanning Microwave Microscopy Of In Situ Grown Epitaxial Ba1-XSrXTio3 Composition Spreads, K. S. Chang, M. Aronova, O. Famodu, I. Takeuchi, S. E. Lofland, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, H. Chang

Faculty Publications

We have performed variable-temperature multimode quantitative microwavemicroscopy of in situepitaxial Ba1−xSrxTiO3 thin-film composition spreads fabricated on (100) LaA1O3 substrates. Dielectric properties were mapped as a function of continuously varying composition from BaTiO3 to SrTiO3. We have demonstrated nondestructive temperature-dependent dielectric characterization of local thin-film regions. Measurements are simultaneously taken at multiple resonant frequencies of the microscope cavity. The multimode measurements allow frequency dispersion studies. We observe strong composition-dependent dielectric relaxation in Ba1−xSrxTiO3 at microwave frequencies.

Shoes And Steel : Dependency Deindustrialization And Its Relationship To Community Strain In Portsmouth, Ohio 1970-1999, Dan Shope

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Portsmouth, Ohio, is an Appalachian city with a long history as a member of the U.S. manufacturing production hierarchy with a large working class population. Its largest manufacturing employers were shoe and steel companies. Historically, Portsmouth depended on manufacturing jobs for its economic survival. During the late 3 I 970s and early 1980s, Portsmouth's manufacturing base was diminished due to the deindustrialization process. This structural transformation affected the total population involved in the manufacturing jobs and yielded a city that depended on outside forces for its economic livelihood. Portsmouth moved into a state of dependent deindustrialization and community strain. When …

Approximate Solutions For Galvanostatic Discharge Of Spherical Particles I. Constant Diffusion Coefficient, Venkat R. Subramanian, James A. Ritter, Ralph E. White Jan 2001

Approximate Solutions For Galvanostatic Discharge Of Spherical Particles I. Constant Diffusion Coefficient, Venkat R. Subramanian, James A. Ritter, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

Approximate models are developed, based on second, fourth, and sixth order polynomials, that describe the concentration profile of an electrochemically active species in a spherical electrode particle. Analytical expressions are obtained that describe the way the concentration profiles, surface concentrations, and electrode utilization change during the galvanostatic discharge of an electrode particle. Based on a comparison with an exact analytical model over a wide range of dimensionless current densities, all three approximate models performed extremely well in predicting these quantities. Quantitative criterion for the validity of these models is also developed and shows that the sixth order, four parameter approximate …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Hydrous Ruthenium Oxide-Carbon Supercapacitors, Manikandan Ramani, Bala S. Haran, Ralph E. White, Branko N. Popov Jan 2001

Synthesis And Characterization Of Hydrous Ruthenium Oxide-Carbon Supercapacitors, Manikandan Ramani, Bala S. Haran, Ralph E. White, Branko N. Popov

Faculty Publications

It is shown that composite Ru oxide-carbon based supercapacitors possess superior energy and power densities as compared to bare carbon. An electroless deposition process was used to synthesize the ruthenium oxide-carbon composites. Ru is dispersed on the carbon matrix as small particles. The effect of electrochemical oxidation and temperature treatment on the material performance has been studied extensively. Increasing the oxidation temperature reduces the proton transport rate and also increases the degree of crystallinity of the deposits. This adversely affects the performance of the composite. Loading a small amount of Ru oxide (9 wt %) on carbon increases the capacitance …

Clear-Sky Albedo Measured At Seven Rangland Sites In Southwest Idaho, Clayton L. Hanson Jan 2001

Clear-Sky Albedo Measured At Seven Rangland Sites In Southwest Idaho, Clayton L. Hanson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

As a component of the energy budget, albedo is used in the calculation of evapotranspiration in many natural resource and hydrologic models. There are few measurements of albedo over sagebrush-dominated rangelands, so albedo was measured at seven sites on the Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed in southwest Idaho during 1989–1993. For all sites, the average albedo measured during midday under clear skies was 0.14 during the growing season. Albedo varied from a low of 0.11 during June at the Mountain big sagebrush site to a high of 0.17 at the low-elevation Wyoming big sagebrush site. Albedo varied little between about 2 …

Research Needs Concerning Non-Target Impacts Of Biological Control Introductions, K.R. Hopper Jan 2001

Research Needs Concerning Non-Target Impacts Of Biological Control Introductions, K.R. Hopper

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Two workshops were held in 1999 on research needs concerning non-target impacts of biological control introductions. One took place on the Internet for 9 months, and the other in Montpellier, France, for 1 day. Altogether, over 200 researchers from over 30 countries participated, representing a wide variety of viewpoints on the issues involved. The deliberations of these workshops are summarized here. Both workshops highlighted the need for retrospective studies to: (i) identify cases of significant non-target impacts; (ii) explore mechanisms involved when such impacts are found; (iii) evaluate the reliability of host-range testing protocols; and (iv) determine whether and under …

Meiotic Stability, Chloroplast Dna Polymorphisms, And Morphological Traits Of Upland X Lowland Switchgrass Reciprocal Hybrids, J. M. Martinez-Reyna, Kenneth P. Vogel, Carol Caha, Donald J. Lee

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) has two cytotypes or cytoplasm types, L and U, that are associated with the lowland and upland ecotypes, respectively. The L cytotypes are tetraploids while the U cytotypes can be either tetraploids or octaploids. The objective of this research was to characterize meiotic stability of reciprocal crosses of U and L plants as indicated by chromosome pairing at meiosis and to determine the mode of inheritance of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) in the hybrids of these cytotypes. Morphological markers that characterize the parents and hybrids also were investigated to confirm that progeny were true hybrids. Reciprocal …

Nutrients In Runoff Following The Application Of Swine Manure To Interrill Areas, John E. Gilley, Bahman Eghball, Brian J. Wienhold, Phillip S. Miller

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The P content of swine manure can be reduced through the addition of feed supplements or the use of selected corn hybrids. This study was conducted to compare interrill runoff losses of P and N from three soils following the application of swine manure obtained from selected diets. The soils used in this investigation included a Hersh sandy loam, Pierre silty clay, and Sharpsburg silt loam. Simulated rainfall was applied during both initial and wet runs to a soil pan on which swine manure produced from low phytate corn (LPC), phytase added to the diet (PHY), or a traditional corn …

The Ali Principles: A Farewell To Fault--But What Remedy For The Egregious Marital Misconduct Of An Abusive Spouse, Peter N. Swisher

Law Faculty Publications

The fundamental premise of this commentary is that the ALl has erred in not including appropriate nonfinancial fault-based factors in the Principles for three major reasons: 1) other no-fault laws, including no-fault automobile insurance law, no-fault workers compensation law, and strict liability in tort law, have all incorporated a number of fault-based exceptions to their general no-fault framework for serious or egregious conduct, and American divorce law should likewise have a similar fault-based exception for serious or egregious marital misconduct; 2) a substantial number of states continue to recognize and utilize a number of fault-based statutory factors in divorce for …

Oxidative Metabolism In Plant/Bacteria Interactions: Characterization Of The Oxygen Uptake Response Of Bacteria, C. Jacyn Baker, Norton Mock, Kenneth L. Deahl, Bryan Bailey, Daniel P. Roberts Jan 2001

Oxidative Metabolism In Plant/Bacteria Interactions: Characterization Of The Oxygen Uptake Response Of Bacteria, C. Jacyn Baker, Norton Mock, Kenneth L. Deahl, Bryan Bailey, Daniel P. Roberts

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

An increase in oxygen uptake has been previously described in plant cell suspensions treated with bacteria or bacterial elicitors. These studies, regarding oxygen uptake, have all been undertaken from the perspective of the host plant cell reacting to the invading pathogen. In contrast, here we describe and characterize an increase in oxygen uptake by bacterial cells in response to plant suspensions or autoclaved plant cell filtrates. Autoclaved plant cell filtrates stimulated bacterial oxygen uptake by as much as sevenfold within a few minutes after addition. This oxygen uptake response was proportional to both the concentration of the plant cell filtrate …

Oxidative Metabolism In Plant/Bacteria Interactions: Characterization Of A Unique Oxygen Uptake Response Of Potato Suspension Cells, C. Jacyn Baker, E. W. Orlandi, Kenneth L. Deahl

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Plant suspension cells have been shown to respond to bacteria or microbial elicitors by producing active oxygen as well as increasing oxygen uptake. Here we characterize a unique two stage oxygen uptake response of potato suspension cells to heat-killed bacteria. Stage 1 occurred within minutes after the addition of heat-killed bacteria; the potato suspension cells responded with a rapid increase in oxygen uptake and reached a steady state approximately 50 % greater than the initial basal rate. Stage 2 began 20-30 min after this new steady state was achieved and was characterized by a slow increase in the oxygen uptake …

Conservation And Evaluation Of Natural Enemies In Ipm Systems For Bemisia Tabaci, Steven E. Naranjo Jan 2001

Conservation And Evaluation Of Natural Enemies In Ipm Systems For Bemisia Tabaci, Steven E. Naranjo

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Conservation biological control emphasizes the preservation and enhancement of natural enemies and is the cornerstone of all approaches to biological control. This review critically examines recent and current research efforts in conservation biological control by predators and parasitoids of Bemisia tabaci worldwide. A large number of natural enemy species have been identified from many agricultural systems. Further research has demonstrated that these natural enemies may act along with other mortality agents to inflict high levels of mortality on populations of B. tabaci. Less effort has been placed on determining the factors constraining or potentially enhancing biological control. The widespread …

Substitution De Solvants : Étude De Cas D'Implantation, Denis Bégin, Michel Gérin

Rapports de recherche scientifique

Introduction

Altered Operant Responding For Motor Reinforcement And The Determination Of Benchmark Doses Following Perinatal Exposure To Low-Level 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin, Vincent P. Markowski, Grazyna Zareba, Sander Stern, Christopher Cox, Bernard Weiss Jan 2001

Altered Operant Responding For Motor Reinforcement And The Determination Of Benchmark Doses Following Perinatal Exposure To Low-Level 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin, Vincent P. Markowski, Grazyna Zareba, Sander Stern, Christopher Cox, Bernard Weiss

Psychology

Pregnant Holtzman rats were exposed to a single oral dose of 0, 20, 60, or 180 ng/kg 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) on the 18th day of gestation. Their adult female offspring were trained to respond on a lever for brief opportunities to run in specially designed running wheels. Once they had begun responding on a fixed-ratio 1 (FR1) schedule of reinforcement, the fixed-ratio requirement for lever pressing was increased at five-session intervals to values of FR2, FR5, FR10, FR20, and FR30. We examined vaginal cytology after each behavior session to track estrous cyclicity. Under each of the FR values, perinatal TCDD exposure …
