All In A Day’S Work: What’S A Reference Librarian To Do?, Sandra B. Placzek
Marvin and Virginia Schmid Law Library: Faculty Publications
Although reference librarians today have much in common with yesterday’s counterparts, their days are much more hectic. Technological advances, changes in law and society, demands from a diverse group of library users, and an increased workload make time and stress management important issues to explore. This article examines reference librarianship in the academic environment, discusses how reference librarianship has changed, and offers suggestions on coping with the stresses those changes have caused.

From Pets To Companion Animals, Martha C. Armstrong, Susan Tomasello, Christyna Hunter
From Pets To Companion Animals, Martha C. Armstrong, Susan Tomasello, Christyna Hunter
State of the Animals 2001
Almost two-thirds of U.S. households have a dog, cat, bird, or reptile as a pet. The number of dogs, and particularly puppies, relinquished to shelters was rapidly diminishing as of mid-2000, to the point that some shelters did not have any puppies for adoption for many months. Those dogs and cats fortunate enough to be in lifelong homes are enjoying a longer life span than those who shared our homes in the first half of the twentieth century.
Additional good news is the way that animal shelters—whether run municipally, privately, or through a combination of municipal and private funding—are different …

Investor-State Disputes Under Nafta: The Empire Strikes Back, Charles H. Brower Ii
Investor-State Disputes Under Nafta: The Empire Strikes Back, Charles H. Brower Ii
Law Faculty Research Publications
This Article examines the growing opposition to arbitration of investor-state disputes involving challenges to regulatory measures under Chapter 11 of NAFTA. The NAFTA Parties apparently seek to restore national sovereignty over such matters by subjecting these awards to heightened review by municipal courts at the seat of arbitration, effectively giving Canadian, Mexican, and United States courts the final authority to interpret Chapter 11. When successful, this practice violates both the letter of Chapter 11 and the intent of the NAFTA Parties to place investor-state disputes within the deferential legal framework of international commercial arbitration. Although the NAFTA Parties may, escape …

Civic Journalism In The 2000 U.S. Senate Race In Virginia, David Kennamer, Jeff C. South
Civic Journalism In The 2000 U.S. Senate Race In Virginia, David Kennamer, Jeff C. South
Richard T. Robertson School of Communication Presentations
The Norfolk Virginian-Pilot is a proponent of civic journalism; the Richmond Times-Dispatch is not. Content analysis of the papers’ coverage of Virginia’s 2000 U.S. Senate election reflected the divergent newsroom philosophies. The Times-Dispatch stories were more likely to be triggered by campaign-managed events, to focus on the election “horse race” and to use political establishment sources. The Pilot’s stories were more likely to result from independent or enterprise reporting, to address issues and to use “real people” sources.

Capital Punishment: Does Death Equal Justice?, Tara Volpe
Capital Punishment: Does Death Equal Justice?, Tara Volpe
e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing
Capital punishment causes the death of someone because that person killed someone else, yet only murderers suffer such a fate. Rapists do not endure rape, thieves do not have their possessions robbed, and those convicted of assault do not undergo a similar assault.
Tara Volpe is currently a sophomore at James Madison University. She reports, "I am an IDLS major, with a minor in early childhood education. I hope to teach kindergarten after I graduate because I love working with children! I am also origionally from upstate New York but reside in Midland, Virginia.

Monterey-Seaside Quadrangles : Earthquake Fault Zones And The Local Building Policy, Chris Pilson
Monterey-Seaside Quadrangles : Earthquake Fault Zones And The Local Building Policy, Chris Pilson
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
he population of the Monterey peninsula is increasing. Developers are looking to expand housing and other commercial and public building into previously undeveloped areas. Because faults cut through the peninsula and surrounding areas, the possibility of building on potentially seismically hazardous areas increases as the population expands. Upon examination of the current Monterey County policies on building and planning I found those policies did not fully reflect the current scientific knowledge about active faults in the region. The Monterey County General Area Plan is currently being revised as a normal process of revising the Plan every 20 years. The last …

Responsive Regulation Of Internet Pharmacy Practice, David B. Brushwood
Responsive Regulation Of Internet Pharmacy Practice, David B. Brushwood
Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences
Professor Brushwood discusses the effectiveness of the Internet as a medium for carrying out pharmaceutical care. A proponent of Internet pharmacy, Professor Brushwood argues that pharmacy regulators could best protect and promote public health through responsive Internet regulation. Wary of state paternalism, the article advocates the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Site program of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy as a model method for regulating pharmacy practices over the Internet.
