A Look At The Possible Effects Of Genial/Eclectic Learning Environments In Denmark And The United States Of America, Annette Sigrid Wilson

Graduate Research Papers

The intent of this qualitative research is to gain knowledge and understanding of the impact a genial/eclectic environment may have upon creativity and skillful problem solving. Upon invitation from Benedicte Riis, a well-known Danish educator, composer, author, musician, and presenter in Denmark, Bulgaria, Norway, and the United States; I embarked on a trip to Ebeltoft, Denmark in May of2000 to study her pedagogy. My desire was to compare the methodologies, philosophies, and classroom environments of Benedicte's Tante Andante Hus in Denmark with Franklin Elementary School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. My professors at the University of Northern Iowa encouraged me to …

Relationship Between Early Development Of Spelling And Reading, Lorraine S. Hammond Jan 2001

Relationship Between Early Development Of Spelling And Reading, Lorraine S. Hammond

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The research reported in this thesis examined the relationship between beginning spelling and reading. More specifically, it focussed on the relationship between the development of early reading and spelling in a context where the approach to early reading instruction includes systematic phonological awareness and decoding instruction. A critical assumption made by proponents of developmental early literacy models is that transfer of skills and knowledge from reading to spelling will occur spontaneously and without formal instruction (Frith, 1980). By contrast instruction-centred approaches make the assumption that there are critical pre-requisite skills that can and should be taught explicitly (Carnine, Silbert & …

Teacher Perceptions Of Student Speech, Yvonne G. Haig Jan 2001

Teacher Perceptions Of Student Speech, Yvonne G. Haig

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Although language variation is widespread and natural,it is subject to judgement. Where a standard language has developed, other varieties tend to be judged against its "standards". While a number of overseas studies have found that this type of linguistic bias occurs in education and negatively impacts on dialect speakers, there has been little research in Australia. The research reported in this thesis investigates how teachers perceive the speech of school-aged students and whether the socio-economic status or level of schooling of the students influence these perceptions. Further, it examines the relationships between the teachers' background, the way they define Standard …

Accumulated Response In Live Improvised Dance Performance, Joanna T. Pollitt Jan 2001

Accumulated Response In Live Improvised Dance Performance, Joanna T. Pollitt

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The response project and accompanying thesis aim to affirm the role of the dancer as an authority in revealing patterns and traces of accumulated lived experience, knowledge and ideas through the practice and performance of dance improvisation. The dancing body is investigated as a dynamical and complex system of research that is embedded in a process of continual response to the present. These bodily inscriptions and the process of active response form the seminal grounds for the physical and energetic exchange of improvised dance in performance.

Trace And The Makers Of Meaning, Lindon J. Thompson Jan 2001

Trace And The Makers Of Meaning, Lindon J. Thompson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

One of the greatest accessible records of trace and the past is the landscape, which over time acts as a repository of evidence from natural forces and things that humans have created or changed. This thesis considers trace as material and nonmaterial evidence, remnants, marks, vestiges of events past and forgotten or remembered. How can a past that is evidenced only by its traces be read within a landscape context by disciplines of knowledge production? The subsequent interpretation, generation of meaning and understanding of traces contributes to the knowledge, mythology and perceptions of reality for differing groups in different places. …

A Critical Linguistic Analysis Of A Popular Comic Genre In Japan, Angela Rawson Jan 2001

A Critical Linguistic Analysis Of A Popular Comic Genre In Japan, Angela Rawson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research will focus on the issue of power and gender in the language of Japanese comics (manga). Comics in Japan are enormously popular and are read by a wide audience. They are aimed at specific audiences and it is my argument that the language of manga helps to reinforce certain social stereotypes - particularly the inferiority of women and the dominance of males. The language of children's manga will be analyzed using the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), which concerns itself with the relation between ideology and power in discourse. The analysis will be at various levels including …

An Evaluation Of The Orientation Program For Newly Appointed Catholic Primary Principals, Samuel G. Fontaine Jan 2001

An Evaluation Of The Orientation Program For Newly Appointed Catholic Primary Principals, Samuel G. Fontaine

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The structure and operation of Catholic schools in Western Australia have been in a process of change since the early 1970’s. Prior to 1971, most Catholic primary schools were administered by religious orders and much of the religious character of the school reflected the charisma of the particular religious order that operated the school. In the Year 2000 most Catholic primary schools former part of a state-wide system in which the Catholic Education Office (CEO) plays a major administrative and co-ordinating role.

The Effect Of Prescribed And Preferred Intensity Exercise On The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Perceived Exertion In Older Adults, Keith R. Scotson Jan 2001

The Effect Of Prescribed And Preferred Intensity Exercise On The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Perceived Exertion In Older Adults, Keith R. Scotson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study was concerned with acute responses to exercise in people over the age of 50 (N = 80). In particular the relationship between Self-efficacy and perceived exertion during exercise at workloads (a) based on a target heart rate (prescribed intensities) and (b) based on participant preference (preferred intensities) were observed. Perceptual (perceived exertion), Self-efficacy and heart rate responses of low active older participants engaged in either walking or cycle ergometer exercise at preferred and prescribed intensities were also reported. Significant inverse correlations were observed between pre and post exercise Self-efficacy and perceived exertion during acute exercise at prescribed intensities …

Documentary Photography/Postmodern Commodities, Allan Radich

Theses : Honours

This honours project is divided into two parts. Part one is the written thesis. Part two is the photographic component. Part one discusses some of the practices and discourses associated with 'documentary' photography. Some documentary practices and discourses of the past can be seen to be culturally divisive. These practices and discourses were based on being, white, male and European. This ideology and its discursive modes are in conflict with contemporary photographic practices and the relevant social and cultural theories that define it. The thesis defines the discourses and practices of the modernist and postmodernist documentary photographer. It highlights the …

All That Glitters Is Not Gold: Bad Forgiveness In Counseling And Preaching, John M. Berecz Jan 2001

All That Glitters Is Not Gold: Bad Forgiveness In Counseling And Preaching, John M. Berecz

Faculty Publications

A 3 R's of Forgiveness model is presented in which forgiveness is seen as a complex therapeutic process involving both situational and personal variables. Forgivers are seen to utilize the cognitive processes of dialectical reasoning and reframing, modulated by the emotional experiences of empathy, guilt, and shame. Personality style and self-esteem significantly influence the process as well. Distinctions are maintained among various kinds of forgiveness. Divine forgiveness, seen as a partial component of a spiritual encounter with one's God, may be a valid experience for people of faith, but is not something that psychologists are equipped to experimentally analyze. Interpersonal …

Religious Fundamentalism And Gender Differences, Herbert W. Helm, John M. Berecz, Emily A. Nelson Jan 2001

Religious Fundamentalism And Gender Differences, Herbert W. Helm, John M. Berecz, Emily A. Nelson

Faculty Publications

The role of religious fundamentalism and its relationship to shame and guilt was evaluated in 107 students who attend a church-sponsored university. A number of personality measures were given and gender differences were analyzed. The role of externalization was similar for males in this sample to that of earlier studies. However, it was found that females showed positive correlations between externalization and both shame and guilt. For females, more fundamentalistic religious training may help to contribute to an external orientation at the expense of identifying with a personal religion, and appropriate guilt. © 2001 Human Sciences Press, Inc.

Genetic Testing For Susceptability To Disease From Exposure To Toxic Chemicals: Implications For Public And Worker Health Policies, Michael S. Baram Jan 2001

Genetic Testing For Susceptability To Disease From Exposure To Toxic Chemicals: Implications For Public And Worker Health Policies, Michael S. Baram

Faculty Scholarship

The Environmental Genome Program intends to identify "susceptibility genes" that would indicate if a person is more vulnerable to cancer or other disease as a result of exposure to certain chemicals in the workplace, the environment, foods, or other products. Research findings and the capability to test persons for such genes are likely to impugn and challenge health policies and regulatory programs that do not take genetic susceptibility into account when conferring health benefits and restricting chemical exposures. This article focuses on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and discusses four options available to this agency for protecting genetically …

The Influence Of Retention Intervals And Warning Signals On Prospective Memory., Michael Andrew Sarapata Jan 2001

The Influence Of Retention Intervals And Warning Signals On Prospective Memory., Michael Andrew Sarapata

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prospective memory, memory for future events, is used for remembering duties and obligations that all people must complete. Past research has contributed to our understanding of the bases of prospective memory tasks (time versus event) and the kinds of situations requiring prospective memory (appointments, chores, deadlines, and medications). However, research has yet to examine how prospective remembering unfolds over time. For example, very little is known about how such remembering is affected by the time from when the task is encoded to the time that a task must be conducted (the retention interval), the length of the time in which …

Denial And Locus Of Control In Cardiac Rehabilitation, Jami Barto Hoxmeier Jan 2001

Denial And Locus Of Control In Cardiac Rehabilitation, Jami Barto Hoxmeier

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Denial is a defense mechanism cardiac patients use to cope with the trauma of a cardiac event. Empirical findings document positive and negative effects of denial on cardiac patients' health and health-promoting behavior. Theoretical models of stress and coping suggest denial can interfere with health-promoting behavior when individuals are in control of variables affecting their health. This study addressed the research question: What effect do denial and internal locus of control have on exercise adherence and physiological gains in cardiac rehabilitation? One hundred-thirty patients in an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program completed the Cardiac Denial of Impact Scale, the Multidimensional Health …

Disordered Eating And Its Psychosocial Correlates Among Hispanic Adolescent Females, Annette Santiago

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the incidence of disordered eating and its relationship with acculturation, depression, and body dissatisfaction among Hispanic adolescent females. One hundred and five students enrolled at two midwestern high schools completed a Student Demographic Questionnaire, the Bidimensional Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (Marin & Gamba, 1996), the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996), the Body Dissatisfaction Subscale of the Eating Disorder Inventory (Garner, Olmstead, & Polivy, 1983), and the Eating Attitudes Test (Garner, Olmstead, Bohr, & Garfinkel, 1982). Two null hypotheses were examined. The first investigated the relationship among acculturation, depression, body dissatisfaction, and disordered eating utilizing …

Friends Who Neglect Their Friends For Dating Partners: Exploring Relational Aggression, Overt Aggression And Emotional Reactions In Adolescents, Lisa Diane D'Amico Jan 2001

Friends Who Neglect Their Friends For Dating Partners: Exploring Relational Aggression, Overt Aggression And Emotional Reactions In Adolescents, Lisa Diane D'Amico

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prior research on relational aggression has been limited by failing to look at high school students and by not considering the context in which relational aggression may occur in adolescence. Changes that occur during adolescence may make relational aggression both especially salient and hurtful in this population. For example, friendships during adolescence are more intimate than during any other developmental period. It is also during adolescence when dating relationships are prevalent, taking the primary focus off of same-sex peer relations. The purpose of this study was to examine how adolescents react (both emotionally and behaviorally) when their friend neglects them …

The following null hypothesis was tested by a stepwise canonical discriminant analysis: No subset of perceived family environment variables (cohesion, expressiveness, conflict, organization, and …

Psychologist Gender And Sex Bias In Diagnosing Histrionic And Narcissistic Personality Disorders, Kevin B. Erickson Jan 2001

Psychologist Gender And Sex Bias In Diagnosing Histrionic And Narcissistic Personality Disorders, Kevin B. Erickson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relative influence of gender and sex on psychologists' diagnoses of histrionic (HPD) and narcissistic (NPD) personality disorders. Gender was defined according to conventional behavioral norms, and included the categories of masculine, feminine, and androgynous. Sex was defined by biological features, and included the categories of male, female, and sex-unspecified. Psychologists were mailed a survey and asked to assign a single diagnosis to a clinical case vignette that was equally representative of DSM-IV (APA, 1994) HPD and NPD criteria, but which varied regarding the nine possible pairings of a gender and a sex. A total of 184 …

The Comparative Effects Of Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing (Emdr) And Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Cbt) In The Treatment Of Depression, William Andrew Hogan

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a unique, short-term therapy shown to be effective in the treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Application of EMDR to the treatment of depression was considered based upon the relationship between negative life experience and symptom onset, a pattern common to both PTSD and depression. Evaluation of the efficacy of EMDR in the treatment of depression was accomplished via a comparison with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Because EMDR has been shown to be effective in the treatment of PTSD, the impact of EMDR and CBT upon symptoms comorbid to depression was investigated. EMDR …

The Effect Of Individual Counseling On Hope And Its Impact On The Utilization Of Services By Individuals With Hiv Disease, Barry Michael Vesciglio

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The interrelationships of participation in counseling, level of hope, and care service utilization in a sample of individuals with HIV disease was the focus of this study. It was hypothesized that individual counseling would improve an HIV-positive person's level of hope, and would increase participation in additional care services. It was also hypothesized that individuals with more hope would seek a greater number of care services. The Health Status Questionnaire, which contains the Hope Scale, and the Social Support Questionnaire were used to collect data. Participation in individual counseling was not related to level of hope. Additionally, stage of illness …

The Impact Of Creative Problem Solving For Generaleducation Intervention Teams On Team Members' Ratings Of Treatment Acceptability, Jennifer L. Grimes Jan 2001

The Impact Of Creative Problem Solving For Generaleducation Intervention Teams On Team Members' Ratings Of Treatment Acceptability, Jennifer L. Grimes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many states require or recommend school-based, problem-solving teams in an effort to develop interventions to address student and teacher needs. Often these teams have not been trained in a structured problem-solving process, which is thought to improve the quality of interventions developed by a team. Creative Problem Solving (CPS) is a problem-solving process developed from creativity and cognitivePsychology literature and has been found to increase team effectiveness. CPS has been modified for use with school-based, problem-solving teams, which are called GeneralEducation Intervention (GEI) teams in the state of Indiana, to assist in developing quality interventions. This modified process is called …

Proximate And Ultimate Factors Contributing To The Variation In A Sexually Dimorphic Signal In Sceloporus Lizards, Vanessa S. Quinn

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Animals communicate in many different ways using a variety of signals to send information to conspecifics and heterospecifics. These systems consist of at least two individuals, signalers and receivers. Signalers produce and physiologically control the production of signals and send the signal into the environment. Receivers obtain signals via sensory receptors, process information in the central nervous system, and respond in some manner. Selective forces could act on any one, or a combination of, these factors to lead to sex and species differences. Thus, to properly study the evolution of these systems, evolutionary biologists must examine multiple levels. I have …

Using an experimental design, GEI teams trained in CPS and untrained GEI teams were compared on the number of referrals to the GEI team, the rate of referrals to specialEducation, the rate of non-verifiable referrals, and ratings of team effectiveness. Additional areas explored were GEI teams' perceptions of how the GEI team benefits …

Mediation In Practice: Common Law And Civil Law Perspectives Compared, Nadja Alexander Jan 2001

Mediation In Practice: Common Law And Civil Law Perspectives Compared, Nadja Alexander

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Australian mediation practice is thriving. Effective forms of mediation are practised in court-connected schemes, in the public sector, in the community justice sector and in the private business sector. Indeed, no industry is excluded from the application of mediation. In contrast, Hoffmann-Riem laments that despite many years of discussions about ADR (alternative dispute resolution) in Germany, mediation plays a marginal role only. Further, Labes states that 'ADR mechanisms are relatively obscure methods in Germany.' The comparison between Australia and Germany is particularly interesting because it considers both a common law and a civil law tradition. This essay will discuss the …
