Perceived Knowledge Of Heart Failure And Adherence To Self-Care Recommendations, Cheryl Lynn Van Ess Jan 2001

Perceived Knowledge Of Heart Failure And Adherence To Self-Care Recommendations, Cheryl Lynn Van Ess

Masters Theses

During the last decade, research has indicated that patient education is an essential component in the comprehensive management of heart failure. However, few data are available that evaluate how effective that education is and the relationship between knowledge and self-care adherence. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between patients’ perceived knowledge of heart failure and their reported self-care adherence with diet, exercise, and medication in the management of their chronic disease. Orem’s self-care theory provided the framework for this study.

This study was a secondary analysis of the baseline data collected from a self-reporting questionnaire …

Rehabilitation Nurses' Attitudes And Behaviors Related To Sexuality Of Rehabilitation Patients, Renae Boss Potts Jan 2001

Rehabilitation Nurses' Attitudes And Behaviors Related To Sexuality Of Rehabilitation Patients, Renae Boss Potts

Masters Theses

Sexuality is intrinsic to the nature of human beings. If nurses are to practice holistically, issues concerning sexuality are relevant to nursing practice. The attitudes and behaviors that rehabilitation nurses express regarding the care of rehabilitation patients were explored in this descriptive study. One hundred and one members of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) responded to the Williams - Wilson Sexuality Survey (WWSS). The possible range of scores on the attitude scale was 11 - 66. The actual results ranged from 21 to 65, with a mean of 48 and a standard deviation of 10. The higher the attitudinal …

Relationship Of Perceived Self-Efficacy Of Disease Management And Hospital Utilization Among Patients With Heart Failure, Linda K. English Jan 2001

Relationship Of Perceived Self-Efficacy Of Disease Management And Hospital Utilization Among Patients With Heart Failure, Linda K. English

Masters Theses

This secondary analysis examined the relationship between perceived self-efficacy of disease management and hospital admissions for heart failure patients based on Bandura’s social learning theory. A convenience sample of 76 patients who were receiving home care services were visited over the course of several weeks. Data were collected at baseline, 3, and 6 months using the Self-Management Tool adapted from the work of Lorig et al. (1996).

Data indicated a weak negative statistically significant relationship between perceived self-efficacy of disease management and hospital utilization at 3 months (r = -.33, p = .01). In addition, hospital utilization decreased over time, …

Perceived Problem Areas For Adults Living With Diabetes, Valda Tolliver Jan 2001

Perceived Problem Areas For Adults Living With Diabetes, Valda Tolliver

Masters Theses

The purpose of the study was to examine the perceived problem areas for adults living with diabetes. A descriptive design using the Problem Areas in Diabetes Scale (PAID) among a convenience sample of 24 African Americans provided the data in this study. King’s (1971) conceptual framework for nursing provided the theoretical foundation.

Data indicated that 83% of the sample did not perceive living with diabetes as a serious problem. However, the majority of them identified food deprivation and coping with diabetes, in addition to worrying about the future and possible serious complications from the disease as problematic. These results suggest …

The Significance Of Trust In The Research Consent Process With African Americans, Catherine E. Earl, Pamela J. Penney Jan 2001

The Significance Of Trust In The Research Consent Process With African Americans, Catherine E. Earl, Pamela J. Penney

Peer Reviewed Articles

Nurses and other health scientists face serious challenges in recruiting African Americans as research participants. The trend in published research shows a declining representation of African Americans in study groups, particularly in nursing and clinical trial research (Mouton, Harris, Rovi, Solorzano, & Johnson, l997; Shavers-Hornaday, Lynch, Burmeister, & Torner, l997; Plowden &Wenger, 2001). Published research involving African Americans has almost disappeared from the literature in major American Psychological Association journals since the l970s; the overall percentage of research studies involving African Americans is a mere 3.6% (Graham, l992).

A review of the literature offers reasons for African American’s lack of …

Fairness, Efficiency And Insider Trading: Deconstructing The Coin Of The Realm In The Information Age, Kimberly D. Krawiec Jan 2001

Fairness, Efficiency And Insider Trading: Deconstructing The Coin Of The Realm In The Information Age, Kimberly D. Krawiec

Faculty Scholarship

Whether and how the federal securities laws should restrict insider trading is one of the most hotly debated topics in the securities law literature. Paradoxically, both the theoretical analysis and the legal rules concerning insider trading remain extraordinarily vague and ill-formed. What is the special character of insider trading that leads to this apparently irresolvable puzzle? In this Article, I argue that there is, in fact, nothing special about insider trading that creates this dilemma, but rather there is something special about the nature of information itself. Accordingly, this theoretical dilemma is not limited to insider trading regulation, but rather …

Businesswomen's Views On Occupational/Work Success In The Early 21st Century, Heather Martin Jan 2001

Businesswomen's Views On Occupational/Work Success In The Early 21st Century, Heather Martin

Honors Capstones

Women have made tremendous strides in the workforce over the past thirty years. More women than ever are receiving college business degrees and are entering the workforce at a ample rate. However, women only hold a small percentage of top-level positions in business. For example, women run only two of the Fortune 500 companies. This project looks to examine and possibly explain why definitions of success may be one of the possible reasons women are not reaching top executive positions. Many people today assume, ometimes unknowingly, that success is based upon money, position, or status. However, upon closer examination it …

The Marlboro Man's Secret Versus The Public Health: Trade Secrets And Unconstitutional Takings In Phillip Morris V. Reilly, Melanie Tang Jan 2001

The Marlboro Man's Secret Versus The Public Health: Trade Secrets And Unconstitutional Takings In Phillip Morris V. Reilly, Melanie Tang

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Trade secrets have traditionally been considered to be property interests under the law protected by the Fifth Amendment. However, in a series of decisions finding a Massachusetts tobacco product disclosure law to be unconstitutional, the Massachusetts district court departed from established Fifth Amendment takings case law, setting a precedent for successful "regulatory takings" challenges by private companies to public health, welfare, and safety laws. This Note discusses the novel interpretation of a property owner's reasonable investment-backed expectations advanced by the Phillip Morris holdings in contravention to Ruckelshaus v. Monsanto, as x ell as the misguided analysis of the character of …

Beyond The Blackboard: Regulating Distance Learning In Higher Education, Leslie T. Thornton Jan 2001

Beyond The Blackboard: Regulating Distance Learning In Higher Education, Leslie T. Thornton

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

It is not so surprising that traditional institutions of higher education have been relatively slower than businesses, for example, to embrace the potential of the new technologies, and have lost students to those institutions and businesses which have been more willing to change. But technology is playing an enormous role in the shape, size, and direction of education, and it's not waiting for the leaders of traditional institutions--or anyone else, for that matter--to join the club.

This Article examines the scope and impact of that role, specifically as it has developed through a new trend toward online "distance education" or …

Does The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act Exclude Gifted And Talented Children With Emotional Disabilities - An Analysis Of J.D. V. Pawlet., Laura Ketterman

St. Mary's Law Journal

Disabled children benefit from federal legislation which guarantees a free, appropriate education. While no federal mandate requires providing special education for gifted and talented children, the government encourages schools to offer gifted and talented programs. Gifted and talented children with emotional disabilities, however, often fall between these two groups and do not qualify for special education under any legislation. Unfortunately, in many gifted and talented children with disabilities the gift hides the disability—or the disability hides the gift. To compound the problem, legislation and recent court decisions fail to recognize that gifted and talented children have unique needs which should …

Trust, Trustworthiness, And The Behavioral Foundations Of Corporate Law, Margaret M. Blair, Lynn A. Stout Jan 2001

Trust, Trustworthiness, And The Behavioral Foundations Of Corporate Law, Margaret M. Blair, Lynn A. Stout

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Conventional legal and economic analysis assumes that opportunistic behavior is discouraged and that cooperation is encouraged within firms primarily through the use of legal and market incentives. This presumption is embedded in the modern view that the corporation is best described as a "nexus of contracts, " a collection of explicit and implicit agreements voluntarily negotiated among the rationally selfish parties who join in the corporate enterprise. In this Article we take a different approach. We start from the observation that, in many circumstances, legal and market sanctions provide, at best, imperfect means of regulating behavior within the firm. We …

Dispute Resolution In The Boundaryless Workplace, Katherine V.W. Stone Jan 2001

Dispute Resolution In The Boundaryless Workplace, Katherine V.W. Stone

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Since the Supreme Court's decision Gilmer v. Interstate/Johnson Lane Corp. which compelled an employee to submit his age discrimination claim to arbitration under the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA), there has been a dramatic increase in the number of nonunion firms adopting arbitration systems. At the same time, there has been a flood of lawsuits challenging these employment systems, and a corresponding avalanche of judicial opinions addressing the legal issues left open in Gilmer – issues such as the problematic nature of consent in employment arbitration, the deficiencies in due process, and the applicability of the FAA to employment contracts. These …

Character Of The Questions And The Fitness Of The Process: Mental Health, Bar Admissions And The Americans With Disbilities Act, Jon Bauer Jan 2001

Character Of The Questions And The Fitness Of The Process: Mental Health, Bar Admissions And The Americans With Disbilities Act, Jon Bauer

Faculty Articles and Papers

During the decade since the Americans With Disabilities Act went into effect, mental health inquiries by bar examining committees have engendered intense controversy. Courts have reached no clear consensus as to what, if any, questions about mental illness or substance abuse may be posed by licensing agencies. The trend has been towards a form of relaxed scrutiny that authorizes inquiries as long as they are focused on serious conditions that may interfere with practice, and are reasonably tailored in scope and time. This article examines the implications of allowing disability inquiries in the lawyer licensing process. The Article begins with …

West Virginia Children's Perceptions Of Guns And Violence : Examining Rural/Urban Differences Using The Attitudes Towards Guns And Violence Questionnair (Agvq), Randal Brooks Staats Jan 2001

West Virginia Children's Perceptions Of Guns And Violence : Examining Rural/Urban Differences Using The Attitudes Towards Guns And Violence Questionnair (Agvq), Randal Brooks Staats

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

With the recent acts of violence that students have committed while at school, the media, the public, and researchers have investigated why students are displaying these aggressive and violent behaviors. Why are children displaying these acts of violence (e.g., television, video games, lack of family support, etc.)? With everyone pointing a finger as to why children are displaying these acts of violence, a new measure called the Attitudes Towards Guns and Violence Questionnaire (AGVQ) was developed to determine a student's perceptions towards guns and violence. The purpose of this study was to examine whether a significant difference could be found …
