Ethics As Grammar: Changing The Postmodern Subject, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2001

Ethics As Grammar: Changing The Postmodern Subject, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Wittgenstein, one of the most influential, and yet widely misunderstood, philosophers of our age, confronted his readers with aporias—linguistic puzzles—as a means of countering modern philosophical confusions over the nature of language without replicating the same confusions in his own writings. In Ethics as Grammar, Brad Kallenberg uses the writings of theological ethicist Stanley Hauerwas as a foil for demonstrating how Wittgenstein’s method can become concrete within the Christian tradition. Kallenberg shows that the aesthetic, political, and grammatical strands epitomizing Hauerwas’s thought are the result of his learning to do Christian ethics by thinking through Wittgenstein.

Kallenberg argues that …

An Fmri Ssudy Of Imagined Self-Rotation, Sarah H. Creem, Traci Hirsch Downs, Maryjane Wraga, Gregory S. Harrington, Dennis R. Proffitt, J. Hunter Downs Jan 2001

An Fmri Ssudy Of Imagined Self-Rotation, Sarah H. Creem, Traci Hirsch Downs, Maryjane Wraga, Gregory S. Harrington, Dennis R. Proffitt, J. Hunter Downs

Psychology: Faculty Publications

In the present study, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to examine the neural mechanisms involved in the imagined spatial transformation of one's body. The task required subjects to update the position of one of four external objects from memory after they had performed an imagined self-rotation to a new position. Activation in the rotation condition was compared with that in a control condition in which subjects located the positions of objects without imagining a change in self-position. The results indicated similar networks of activation to other egocentric transformation tasks involving decisions about body parts. The most significant area of …

The Academic Support Student In The Year 2010, Leslie Yalof Garfield Jan 2001

The Academic Support Student In The Year 2010, Leslie Yalof Garfield

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Academic support professionals have long recognized the benefits of imparting a greater knowledge of learning skills to law students as a way to enhance their ability to learn the law. Consequently, the science and pedagogy of academic support have become a staple of legal education. However, while the need for academic support remains a constant, the identification of those in need of academic support programs continues to be in flux. Growing social awareness of an expanded definition of diversity, recent decisions such as Hopwood v. Texas and the proliferation of academic support programs have expanded the definition of the academic …

Tracking In An Era Of Standards: Low-Expectation Classes Meet High-Expectation Laws, Kevin G. Welner Jan 2001

Tracking In An Era Of Standards: Low-Expectation Classes Meet High-Expectation Laws, Kevin G. Welner

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This article explores racial resegregation of students through the practice of tracking - the grouping of students into separate classrooms pursuant to perceived academic ability. It places tracking within its larger historical context, as a means for white parents to feel secure about their children's education, and presents a review of scholarly literature concerning the characteristics and application tracking. The main body of the article then sets forth recent analyses of data from two school districts, investigating the harmful and segregative effects of tracking. The article ends by examining aspects of tracking that leave it susceptible to legal challenge, considering …

On Oysters And Other Life Lessons: Art Teacher’S Perceptions Of Social Class And Schooling, Kimberly Cosier

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

I had to be taught that the world was not my oyster. As a child I was quite sure that I was destined for a wondrous life of adventure and distinction. I was the first born in my family, the first child, the first grandchild, the first niece; everyone was crazy about me. My mother swears that on the day I was born my father floated across the room, so filled with joy and pride that his feet literally glided above the floor as he held me in his arms for the first time. I realize now that this is …

Granting Forgiveness Or Harboring Grudges: Implications For Emotion, Physiology, And Health, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, Thomas Ludwig, Kelly L. Vander Laan Jan 2001

Granting Forgiveness Or Harboring Grudges: Implications For Emotion, Physiology, And Health, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, Thomas Ludwig, Kelly L. Vander Laan

Faculty Publications

Interpersonal offenses frequently mar relationships. Theorists have argued that the responses victims adopt toward their offenders have ramifications not only for their cognition, but also for their emotion, physiology, and health. This study examined the immediate emotional and physiological effects that occurred when participants (35 females, 36 males) rehearsed hurtful memories and nursed grudges (i.e., were unforgiving) compared with when they cultivated empathic perspective taking and imagined granting forgiveness (i.e., were forgiving) toward real-life offenders. Unforgiving thoughts prompted more aversive emotion, and significantly higher corrugator (brow) electromyogram (EMG), skin conductance, heart rate, and blood pressure changes from baseline. The EMG, …

Friedman, E. H. (1985). Generation to Generation: Family Process in Church and Synagogue. New York: Guilford Press. ISBN: 0-87630-881-7 This is the foundation text for this course. You may find this challenging reading if family systems terms are new to you. Friedman's insights into the processes of family and church are worth the price of the book - especially chapters 8 & 9. Guerin, P.J., Jr., Forgarty, T. F., Fay, L.F., Kautto, J. G. (1996). Working with Relationship Triangles. New York: Guilford Press. Guerin, et al. adds some meat and bones to many of Friedman's principles. I found this book …
