Effects Of Professional Interpreter Services On The Utilization Of Health Care Services Of Different Language/Cultural Groups, Amanda Fleming Petrik

Dissertations and Theses

Immigration has affected the number of U.S. residents who speak little or no English. These residents have limited English proficiency. Research studies have indicated discrepancies in medical interpretation and medical care. However, differences in health care between the language/ cultural groups are rarely recognized as health discrepancies.

This research project is a quasi-experimental design, testing differences between the four major language groups in the greater Portland, Oregon area. These four major language/cultural groups speak Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish and Russian.

A secondary data analysis was used to compare the differences in utilization of emergency room services, routine services, and urgent care …

Revisiting The United States Hostage Negotiation Policy: An Academic Imperative. Part I, Ibpp Editor Jun 2001

Revisiting The United States Hostage Negotiation Policy: An Academic Imperative. Part I, Ibpp Editor

International Bulletin of Political Psychology

This article comes in two parts - the article and the notes.

Article abstract: To get hostages released without harm requires a national policy committed to that principle. With that in mind, there needs to be an understanding of the perpetrators' "objective view" of reality. These views have political, economic, psychological, cultural, ethno-religious and perceptual dimensions. Those multivariate dimensions of any hostage situation mandate policies that should be based on law enforcement and military perspectives, in order to be flexible enough to permit their consideration and continuously evaluate their national and international implications.

Relationship Between Women's Perceptions Of Sexual Threat And Sexual Abuse History., Jennifer Mcdermott Jun 2001

Relationship Between Women's Perceptions Of Sexual Threat And Sexual Abuse History., Jennifer Mcdermott

Theses and Dissertations

Sexual abuse towards children and women is a common problem in our society. A focus of contemporary research has been on factors that influence individual perceptions about rape incidents. The premise is that warning signs might be present before some rapes, and a woman's sensitivity to risk might be a useful predictor of outcome and adjustment to sexual assault. Unfortunately, little research has been done on women's perceptions of scenarios that portend sexually threatening situations in the absence of overt sexual assault. An objective of the present study was to examine sensitivity to the potential risks or threats occurring during …

The Effects Of Child Diagnosis On Teachers' Judgements Of Treatment Acceptability Of Classroom Interventions., Leslie Ann Rowan Jun 2001

The Effects Of Child Diagnosis On Teachers' Judgements Of Treatment Acceptability Of Classroom Interventions., Leslie Ann Rowan

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of child diagnosis and gender on treatment acceptability. One-hundred-ninety teachers from rural schools read one of four descriptions of a child with behavior problems. The descriptions varied only in terms of the label attached to the child (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, depression, or no diagnosis). Half of the descriptions were of a male child and half were of a female child. Teachers then rated the acceptability of the treatments of positive reinforcement, timeout, and medication using the Abbreviated Acceptability Rating Profile (AARP). It was found that teachers most preferred positive reinforcement, followed …

Personality And The Use Of Coping Resources In Addicted Populations., Linda Ann Winter Jun 2001

Personality And The Use Of Coping Resources In Addicted Populations., Linda Ann Winter

Theses and Dissertations

Persons who are in recovery from addiction to alcohol or other drugs are expected to give up what is often their main coping resource: the maladaptive use of an addictive substance. Yet, typically, recovery programs do not contain a formalized stress-management component. This study examines recovering addicts' spontaneous use of adaptive coping resources, as well as exploring the connection between personality and preferred resources. Personality was assessed using the Revised NEO-Personality Inventory. The use of coping resources was assessed using the Coping Resource Inventory. In addition, participants also completed a short demographic questionnaire for exploratory analysis of possible links between …
