The 1998 Minnesota Legislation For The Prevention Of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: A Policy Analysis, Mary J. Arfmann Jun 2001

The 1998 Minnesota Legislation For The Prevention Of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: A Policy Analysis, Mary J. Arfmann

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study is an analysis of the 1998 prevention legislation in Minnesota. Interview questions were sent to the identified authors of the legislation, opponents, and selected county social service agencies. The policy framework authored by Karger and Stoesz (1998) was used to construct the interview questions. The questions were used to gather the data needed for the analysis.

The findings from the analysis suggested that there was overall support for the concept of prevention efforts but there was confusion, misunderstandings, and lack of consistent and uniform training and implementation of the legislation at the time of data collection. Evidence from …

The Effects Of Limiting Punitive Damage Awards, Edith Greene, David Coon, Brian H. Bornstein Jun 2001

The Effects Of Limiting Punitive Damage Awards, Edith Greene, David Coon, Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In response to concerns that jury awards in tort cases are excessive and unpredictable, nearly every state legislature has enacted some version of tort reform that is intended to curb extravagant damage awards. One of the most important and controversial reforms involves capping (or limiting) the maximum punitive damage award. We conducted a jury analogue study to assess the impact of this reform. In particular, we examined the possibility that capping punitive awards would cause jurors to inflate their compensatory awards to satisfy their desires to punish the defendant, particularly in situations where the defendant’s conduct was highly reprehensible. Relative …

How Parent's Concerns Relate To Their Children's Social Competence, Vikki Negron Jun 2001

How Parent's Concerns Relate To Their Children's Social Competence, Vikki Negron

Theses

Social competence in children is correlated to their success in interacting with adults and peers throughout their life (McCabe, 1998). Social incompetence is associated with peer rejection, poor academic performance, grade retention, juvenile delinquency, school drop-out, and substance abuse (Ladd & Asher, 1990; McCabe, 1998; Ramsey & Ramsey, 1992). This study investigated the relationship between parental concerns about future expectations, child development, parent-child interaction, discipline and social competence in urban preschoolers 2.9-4.8 years of age who attended the Rochester Preschool Parent Program (RPPP). The Parental Questionnaire was used to measure parental concerns (PMHP, 1998). Social competence was measured by parent …

Family Members Of Gays And Lesbians Attitudes Toward Homosexuality, Diane M. Jorgensen Jun 2001

Family Members Of Gays And Lesbians Attitudes Toward Homosexuality, Diane M. Jorgensen

Theses and Graduate Projects

Homophobic attitudes are detrimental to the safety and well-being of gays and lesbians. To determine how attitudes in family members of gays and lesbians are formed, how they change, and what effect having a gay or lesbian family member has on attitudes toward homosexuality, 10 Central Minnesota parents of gays and lesbians were interviewed. Results were related to theories of social deviance, social construction, and cognitive dissonance. Findings indicate parents' initial attitudes were influenced by societal institutions, parents changed their attitudes out of love for their children, and attitudes were changed through research and membership in parent support groups. As …

Social Workers' Experience Of Implementing Therapeutic Touch: A Hermeneutic Study, Sheila V. Greene

Theses and Graduate Projects

Literature exists that reflects the growing use of therapeutic touch within the health care field. This qualitative study was undertaken to expand the knowledge of implementing therapeutic touch into social work practice. This interpretive study presents shared meanings and a common theme uncovered, using hermeneutics research methodology, in the transcribed tests of in-depth interviews with social workers that are utilizing therapeutic touch practices. One theme - healing - was traced throughout the participants' narratives and was verified through excerpts from the texts of their interviews. Discussion of related literature expanded the interpretations presented. Implications for social work practice and policy …

Leadership In The Continuous Improvement Process, Jim L. Kline Jun 2001

Leadership In The Continuous Improvement Process, Jim L. Kline

Theses and Graduate Projects

Companies are formed for many reasons, but without profitability, they will not survive. Therefore, it remains the focus of the company's employees to maintain profitability. New ideas and improvements must be implemented continuously for the company to maintain and increase their profitability.

The employees responsible for continuously implementing these new ideas and improvements will significantly contribute to the success of the company and its profitability. The key to their success is the use of positive leadership and a continuous improvement process. This study presents two theories that support this claim: Masaaki lmai's continuous improvement process, and James MacGregor Burns' theory …

Female Marketing And Communications Professionals: Challenges And Opportunities For Corporate Leadership, Wendy Celaine Wehr

The study continues with an in-depth examination of the leadership experiences of five middle management women who work at publicly held companies and who specialize in marketing and corporate communications, fields that are of increasing importance in today's fast-paced, competitive economy. The Interaction Between Therapist Personal Sexual Trauma History And Client Sexual Trauma Material, Jennifer L. Mcvay Jun 2001

The Interaction Between Therapist Personal Sexual Trauma History And Client Sexual Trauma Material, Jennifer L. Mcvay

Theses and Graduate Projects

As it becomes more common in the United States for survivors to seek professional assistance in healing, therapists are experiencing an increase in the number of their clients identifying as sexual trauma survivors. These clients often suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and are likely to reenact the traumatic events that necessitated therapy, thus exposing their therapists to vicarious trauma. In 60- to 90-minute interviews, this study explored the experiences of female therapists with personal sexual trauma histories in their work with survivors of sexual trauma. The findings demonstrate that a therapist's location in her own healing process and professional …

A Hermeneutics Study: The Spirituality Of Adults With A Terminal Illness In A Hospice Program, Ginny K. Backman Jun 2001

A Hermeneutics Study: The Spirituality Of Adults With A Terminal Illness In A Hospice Program, Ginny K. Backman

Theses and Graduate Projects

Despite the increasing literature on the significance of spirituality to individuals with a terminal illness, specific research focused on the spirituality of individuals in hospice is limited to several quantitative studies, only one with a qualitative component. This qualitative study expands understanding or experience through hermeneutic analysis of in-depth interviews with three individuals with a terminal illness. The individual's narratives revealed "believing" as the way they found meaning in the present moment. "Always believing" and "adamantly believing" in a Supreme Being gave their daily lives meaning and direction. They were steadfast in leaving all to God for this life and …

Using Human Observer Eye Movements In Automatic Image Classifiers, Alejandro Jaimes, Jeff Pelz, Timothy Grabowski, Jason Babcock, Shih-Fu Chang Jun 2001

Using Human Observer Eye Movements In Automatic Image Classifiers, Alejandro Jaimes, Jeff Pelz, Timothy Grabowski, Jason Babcock, Shih-Fu Chang

Presentations and other scholarship

We explore the way in which people look at images of different semantic categories (e.g., handshake, landscape), and directly relate those results to computational approaches for automatic image classification. Our hypothesis is that the eye movements of human observers differ for images of different semantic categories, and that this information can be effectively used in automatic content-based classifiers. First, we present eye tracking experiments that show the variations in eye movements (i.e., fixations and saccades) across different individuals for images of 5 different categories: handshakes (two people shaking hands), crowd (cluttered scenes with many people), landscapes (nature scenes without people), …

Revisiting The United States Hostage Negotiation Policy: An Academic Imperative. Part Ii, Ibpp Editor Jun 2001

Revisiting The United States Hostage Negotiation Policy: An Academic Imperative. Part Ii, Ibpp Editor

International Bulletin of Political Psychology

This article comes in two parts - the article and the notes.

Article abstract: To get hostages released without harm requires a national policy committed to that principle. With that in mind, there needs to be an understanding of the perpetrators' "objective view" of reality. These views have political, economic, psychological, cultural, ethno-religious and perceptual dimensions. Those multivariate dimensions of any hostage situation mandate policies that should be based on law enforcement and military perspectives, in order to be flexible enough to permit their consideration and continuously evaluate their national and international implications.
