The Influence Of Firm Dispositions On Interfirm Relationship Formation In Business Markets, Jean L. Johnson, Ravipreet S. Sohi Dec 2001

The Influence Of Firm Dispositions On Interfirm Relationship Formation In Business Markets, Jean L. Johnson, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

The central premise of this paper is that firm level characteristics or behavioral traits, referred to as predispositions, influence how the firm behaves and interacts in its interfirm relationships (EFRs). This augments traditional approaches that focus on the intra-relationship perspective and/or on environmental influences on the relationship. Firm predispositions of strategic intent and relational proclivity are expected to individually, and in combination, increase the extent of connectedness between partners in interfirm relationships. In turn, through connectedness, they affect relationship effectiveness in terms of reciprocity, information exchange, and cooperation. Results indicated that the predispositions increased connectedness, but combinational effects were not …

Meeting Medical Terminology Needs: The Ontology-Enhanced Medical Concept Mapper, Gondy Leroy, Hsinchun Chen

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This paper describes the development and testing of the Medical Concept Mapper, a tool designed to facilitate access to online medical information sources by providing users with appropriate medical search terms for their personal queries. Our system is valuable for patients whose knowledge of medical vocabularies is inadequate to find the desired information, and for medical experts who search for information outside their field of expertise. The Medical Concept Mapper maps synonyms and semantically related concepts to a user's query. The system is unique because it integrates our natural language processing tool, i.e., the Arizona (AZ) Noun Phraser, with human-created …

The Jordanian Humanitarian Demining Program: A Model Of Optimism And Persistence, Jose Saucedo Dec 2001

The Jordanian Humanitarian Demining Program: A Model Of Optimism And Persistence, Jose Saucedo

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Detecting and removing over 300,000 estimated mines in Jordan’s 509 mine fields is a huge but not insurmountable problem. The deliberate clearing process requires courageous patience, a demonstrated quality of Jordan’s highly qualified engineer officers and soldiers. Trained and experienced deminers, outfitted with state-of-the-art protective equipment and using internationally recognized demining techniques and methodologies, form the base of the Royal Corps of Engineers Humanitarian Demining (HD) attack plan. Though many mines are unaccounted for due to erosion, flooding, and accidental detonation, Royal Corps of Engineer HD soldiers have an established perseverance that will prevail.

Cost Effectiveness Of The Ethiopian And Eritrean Demining Programs, Michael Litzelman, Wayne Perry Dec 2001

Cost Effectiveness Of The Ethiopian And Eritrean Demining Programs, Michael Litzelman, Wayne Perry

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Long after anti-personnel landmines (AP) were planted to gain military advantage in battle, they continue to destroy lives by killing and maiming civilians and livestock, inhibiting productivity and preventing economies from developing in poor, third world countries. Landmines contribute to political instability in regions vital to the United States. The U. S. Department of State claims that there are approximately 85 to 200 million mines in 63 countries, producing approximately 15,000 casualties per year, an average of 70 people per day, or 500 people every week, most of them innocent civilians (DOS 1994). Of these, an estimated 9,500 people are …

A Soldier’S Diary Of Desert Storm, Darin Buse Dec 2001

A Soldier’S Diary Of Desert Storm, Darin Buse

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

To say the mood was celebratory would be an understatement. As the last few thin-skinned vehicles crossed back through the burm that only days earlier had been breached, a shower of tracer fire and flares pierced the evening sky. The once neat file of Bradley fighting vehicles, 113 track vehicles, M1 Abrams tanks, trucks and hummvees now mobbed together in the desert just inside the border of Saudi Arabia. As a Psychological Operations Team Sergeant, I had never before been in such company as the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment. I was not prepared to witness the efficiency and overwhelming power …

Landmine Survivor’S Network Provides Victim Assistance In Jordan, Kathleen Powers Dec 2001

Landmine Survivor’S Network Provides Victim Assistance In Jordan, Kathleen Powers

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

According to military figures, most mine incidents occurred during the latter part of the 1960s and early 1970s, when the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict spilled into Jordan. Incidents rose again during the early part of the 1990s due to heavy rains and floods that shifted landmines from their originally marked and mapped fields into unrecorded areas.

Infrequency Of "Pure" Gad: Impact Of Psychiatric Comorbidity On Clinical Course, Steven E. Bruce, Jason T. Machan, Ingrid Dyck, Martin B. Keller Dec 2001

Infrequency Of "Pure" Gad: Impact Of Psychiatric Comorbidity On Clinical Course, Steven E. Bruce, Jason T. Machan, Ingrid Dyck, Martin B. Keller

Psychology Faculty Works

The widespread occurrence of psychiatric comorbidity among patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has been well documented. However, there is a paucity of studies examining the impact comorbid disorders have on the clinical course of GAD. In this study, 179 patients with GAD at intake, 12 patients with a past history of GAD, and 109 patients who subsequently onset a first episode of GAD during the course of follow-up were followed for 8 years in this naturalistic, prospective study of anxiety disorders. Results indicate that comorbid anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders are very common with GAD and increased during …

The Evolution Of Animal Play, Emotions, And Social Morality: On Science, Theology, Spirituality, Personhood, And Love, Marc Bekoff Dec 2001

The Evolution Of Animal Play, Emotions, And Social Morality: On Science, Theology, Spirituality, Personhood, And Love, Marc Bekoff

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

My essay first takes me into the arena in which science, spirituality, and theology meet. I comment on the enterprise of science and how scientists could well benefit from reciprocal interactions with theologians and religious leaders. Next, I discuss the evolution of social morality and the ways in which various aspects of social play behavior relate to the notion of “behaving fairly.” The contributions of spiritual and religious perspectives are important in our coming to a fuller understanding of the evolution of morality. I go on to discuss animal emotions, the concept of personhood, and how our special relationships with …

Stakeholder Opinions On Accessible Informational Products Helpful In Building Positive, Practical Solutions To Behavioral Challenges Of Individuals With Mental Retardation And/Or Autism, Michael B. Ruef, Ann P. Turnbull Dec 2001

Stakeholder Opinions On Accessible Informational Products Helpful In Building Positive, Practical Solutions To Behavioral Challenges Of Individuals With Mental Retardation And/Or Autism, Michael B. Ruef, Ann P. Turnbull

Graduate Studies in Education

The purpose of the study was twofold: (a) to explore the perceptions of administrators and policy makers, families, friends, individuals with challenging behavior and mental retardation and/or autism, researchers, and teachers regarding current behavioral information and dissemination and (b) to elicit suggestions on the kinds of userfriendly, low-cost informational products that they thought would be most helpful in increasing quality of life while reducing or eliminating behavioral challenges in individuals with disabilities. A qualitative method of inquiry using telephone focus groups and individual interviews was used. The study points to the importance of receiving condensed positive behavioral support information on …

Picture Book Soldiers: Men And Messages, Christina M. Desai Dec 2001

Picture Book Soldiers: Men And Messages, Christina M. Desai

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study examines children's picture books about soldiers and war, including fiction, folktales, and historical fiction, analyzing their implicit and explicit messages about war and the military, and evaluating them for gender stereotyping. The soldiers are found to conform almost uniformly to an exaggerated male stereotype. Different value judgments about war and conflict resolution are found in the fiction vs. the historical fiction and in the historical fiction about earlier vs. later historical periods.

Humanitarian Demining In Egypt: A Half-Century Struggle, Timothy Kennedy Dec 2001

Humanitarian Demining In Egypt: A Half-Century Struggle, Timothy Kennedy

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Over the years and with limited resources, Egypt has demonstrated a strong commitment to eradicating the landmine threat through its dedicated Army Corps of Engineers demining campaign. Since 1948, with limited financing and direction, they report clearing approximately 31 percent of the total mined areas and 51 percent of the mines or UXO. These clearance operations have been costly—Egypt expended over $91 million (U.S.) in national funds and lost over 200 deminers. Competing priorities and dwindling financial resources imposed a halt to active HD operations in 1998. Egypt requested U.S. government HD assistance, and the U.S. Central Command developed a …

Pretreatment Characteristics Of Legally Coerced Drug Treatment Seekers, Bridgett Augustino Dec 2001

Pretreatment Characteristics Of Legally Coerced Drug Treatment Seekers, Bridgett Augustino

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examines the sociodemographics, drug use, criminal, and treatment histories of 598 residential and outpatient legally coerced drug treatment seekers in the Kentucky Treatment Outcome and Performance Pilot Studies Enhancement Project. Analyses examined whether users/addicts entering chemical dependency treatment under legal coercion differed from nonlegally coerced treatment seekers. Stanley Cohen's theoretical model of social control provided the theoretical framework for the study. Results showed demographic and behavioral differences were noted between respondents under no coercion and those under legal coercion on gender, age, educational status, pretreatment criminality and current treatment modality. In addition, differences between the legally coerced and …

Phonemic Awareness In Preschool Children In Relation To Reading Practices In The Home, Anna Hayes Dec 2001

Phonemic Awareness In Preschool Children In Relation To Reading Practices In The Home, Anna Hayes

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Research suggests that phonemic awareness predicts later reading achievement and that children from low-SES families are "at-risk" for failing to develop phonemic awareness. Before children enter school, they spend the majority of their time with their caregivers. Therefore, activities that take place in the home are of importance when looking at what fosters development. The present study focused on children participating in two Head Start programs and on their families as well. The parents were interviewed to learn about the home activities, and the children were given a phonemic awareness assessment. The study found that the majority of parents reported …

Temporal, Perspectives, Dispositional Styles, And Subjective Well-Being, Mary Naeger Dec 2001

Temporal, Perspectives, Dispositional Styles, And Subjective Well-Being, Mary Naeger

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study investigated the relationship between time perspective (TP) and the personality dispositions of optimism, pessimism, and realism with regard to their proposed influence on three measures that collectively assessed subjective well-being (SWB). The Depression-Happiness Scale (McGreal & Joseph, 1993) assessed happiness or the presence of positive affect and the absence of negative affect, the cognitiveaffective components of SWB. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985) provided the measurement of subjective life satisfaction, the essential final cognitive-judgmental component of SWB. The Life Orientation Scale-Revised (LOT-R) (Scheier, Carver, and Bridges, 1994) and a Reality Scale, composed …

Combating Subterranean Terror, Her Majesty Queen Noor

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Over the past 25 years, driving past Jordan Valley mine fields fenced off by barbed wire, visiting with landmine victims, or tallying the grim statistics, I have grieved for the children and adults in the Middle East routinely maimed or killed by these weapons of mass destruction in slow motion. Our region has been called the landmine heartland of the world, with an estimated 50 million mines scarring the earth from Morocco to Afghanistan. Beyond the physical and psychological torture of those who have been injured, or lost loved ones, is the further punishment of land made desolate, lost to …

Can Meaningful Effective Connectivities Be Obtained Between Auditory Cortical Regions?, M S Gonçalves, D A Hall, Ingrid Johnsrude, M P Haggard Dec 2001

Can Meaningful Effective Connectivities Be Obtained Between Auditory Cortical Regions?, M S Gonçalves, D A Hall, Ingrid Johnsrude, M P Haggard

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Structural equation modeling (SEM) of neuroimaging data can be evaluated both for the goodness of fit of the model and for the strength of path coefficients (as an index of effective connectivity). SEM of auditory fMRI data is made difficult by the necessary sparse temporal sampling of the time series (to avoid contamination of auditory activation by the response to scanner noise) and by the paucity of well-defined anatomical information to constrain the functional model. We used SEM (i.e., a model incorporating latent variables) to investigate how well fMRI data in four adjacent cortical fields can be described as an …
