Vegetarianism In Russia: The Tolstoy(An) Legacy, Ronald D. Leblanc
Vegetarianism In Russia: The Tolstoy(An) Legacy, Ronald D. Leblanc
Languages, Literatures & Cultures
The collapse of communist rule in Russia at the beginning of the 1990s revived a whole series of social, cultural, and ideological phenomena that had either lain dormant or been almost entirely absent during the Soviet period, phenomena ranging from pornography and prostitution to religion and real estate. Vegetarianism, which had been demonized under Stalin as a pernicious and insidiously "anti-scientific" doctrine promulgated by the ideologues of the exploitative classes in the capitalist West, experienced a revival that began during the glasnost' years; it has continued to remain popular in post communist Russia as well. The Vegetarian Society of the …

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS
To compare phosphorus intake and renal phosphorus regulation between thermally injured patients and multiple trauma patients, 40 consecutive critically ill patients, 20 with thermal injury and 20 with multiple trauma, who required enteral tube feeding were evaluated. Phosphorus intakes were recorded for 14 days from the initiation of tube feeding which was started 1 to 3 days post-injury. Serum for determination of phosphorus concentrations was collected at days 1, 3, 7, and 14 of the study period. A 24-hour urine collection was obtained during the first and second weeks of nutrition support for urinary phosphorus excretion, fractional excretion of phosphorus, …

Belden Center Books
This book is a normative audit of the past hundred years in the U.S. economy. As we tiptoe into the new millennium, we are the oldest living republic. However, let's remember that our Constitution doesn't guarantee us a good life, prosperous life, a happy life, or even a long life. It only offers the protection of life. We make of our lives what we will. We should bet on the long run future success of American capitalism. If we don't have a future, nobody does.

Legal Accountability In An Era Of Privatized Welfare, Michele E. Gilman
Legal Accountability In An Era Of Privatized Welfare, Michele E. Gilman
All Faculty Scholarship
When the federal welfare system was reformed in 1996, Congress devolved much of the authority over welfare delivery to the states and gave them the option of contracting out administration of their programs to private entities. Moreover, after welfare reform, enacted as the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRA), welfare recipients are expected to work to receive benefits. This means that front-line workers must engage in intensive interpersonal counseling rather than simply confirm objective eligibility criteria and dispense checks. As a result, front-line workers have vastly increased discretion. When privatization is layered over this discretionary scheme, issues of …

The Relationship Between Mist Exposure And Reproductive Success In Scaphyglottis Acostaei (Orchidaceae), May 2001, Rebecca Lara
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
I examined how the reproduction and fitness of the orchid, Scaphyglottis acostaei depends on the water resources derived from cloud mist in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Thirty-six individuals of S. acostaei were selected to undergo treatments of mist exclusion, mist enhancement and light modification for 15 days. The pseudobulb width changed significantly over the 15 days for the four treatments, suggesting that mist precipitation is a limiting resource for S. acostaei. Additionally, mist was collected on the northeast and southwest sides of four pasture trees, and a total of 139 individual orchids were sampled for number of fruits, racemes and leaves, …
The Uniform Health-Care Decisions Act And Its Progress In The States, David M. English
The Uniform Health-Care Decisions Act And Its Progress In The States, David M. English
Faculty Publications
Over the past decade, planning for health care decision making through the making of an advance directive has become a routine part of personal counseling. Public interest in the subject has been fueled by well-publicized cases such as Cruzan v. Director, Missouri Department of Health, 497 U.S. 261 (1990). In response to this interest, most states authorize their citizens to make at least one form of advance directive: all states statutorily authorize powers of attorney for health care, and all but Massachusetts, Michigan and New York authorize living wills. State legislation has been a mixed blessing. Although intended to facilitate …

Applying A Legal Matrix To The World Of Sports, Elsa Kircher Cole
Applying A Legal Matrix To The World Of Sports, Elsa Kircher Cole
Michigan Law Review
The intensity of fans' love for sports is no modern phenomenon. In ancient Rome, fierce rivalries existed between fans of the Red, Green, Blue, and White factions in chariot racing. Even emperors had their favorites. A foul in a race by a member of one faction could spark a riot in the stands. Winning charioteers would have their busts displayed in public places and were paid salaries far beyond that of the average citizen. Juvenal complained in his Satires that a chariot driver might earn 100 times more than a lawyer! The best drivers even achieved free agency and could …

Latino Children's Kindergarten Entry: Views Of Parents And Teachers, Shanda Stephens
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study examined parental and teacher expectations of kindergarten readiness of Latino children. The perceptions of Latino mothers, Latino fathers, and kindergarten teachers were analyzed and compared. Specifically, parents' and teachers' responses were compared in three areas: perceptions of what parents can do to prepare children for kindergarten, priorities for requisite kindergarten entry skills, and rankings of the importance of specified skills to be emphasized in kindergarten. Differences between kindergarten teachers' expectations for nonnative English-speaking children and native English-speaking children were also examined.
The parent sample consisted of 35 Latino mother/father pairs. All were parents of children who entered kindergarten …

The Effects Of Parental Age And Housing Type On The Reproductive Success Of The Purple Martin (Progne Subis Subis), Jessica A. Eads
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The reproductive success of the Purple Martin is dependent upon many factors. This study measured reproductive success of the Purple Martin (Progne subis subis) based on parental age and type of housing used. Reproductive parental ages consist of adults (experienced breeders) and subadults (first time breeders). Housing types included in this study were aluminum housing, wooden housing, plastic gourds, natural gourds, SuperGourds, and mailbox housing. The reproductive success was defined as the percentage of the original clutch that fledged. Study sites were located in Alabama, Indiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Virginia. Pairs mating nonassortatively by age group …

"'Tis Hard To Dance With One Shoe": The Failure Of The Fathers In Walker's The Color Purple And Mccourt's Angela's Ashes., Gwendolyn Nicole Hale
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In his story, “The Commitments,” Roddy Doyle identifies the Irish as "the blacks of Europe" (148). This sentiment typifies the oppression of the two cultures. The overwhelmingly oppressive society of the two aforementioned groups creates an atmosphere of failure, particularly for the fathers, who, for the most part, are supposed to be the heads of their families. Through Alice Walker’s The Color Purple and Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes, the reader discovers the effects of these failures of the fathers due to tyrannical societies that impose dominance over such groups as the African-Americans and the Irish. The main characters, Celie and …
The Cardiovascular Effects Of Resistance Exercise Training On Orthostatic Intolerance In Elderly Individuals., Lynn P. Rhea
The Cardiovascular Effects Of Resistance Exercise Training On Orthostatic Intolerance In Elderly Individuals., Lynn P. Rhea
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the age-related changes associated with normal aging is the inability to maintain normal blood pressure homeostasis, a common clinical condition known as orthostatic intolerance. There are little data on the effects of strength training in healthy adults and orthostatic intolerance, and only one study on strength training and elderly adults diagnosed with orthostatic intolerance. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of resistance training on the cardiovascular respones of elderly individuals during an orthostatic challenge.
Thirteen subjects were assigned to either a resistance (RES; n=7; 66±5 yrs.) or a control (CON; n=6; 71±6 …

Community Structure Of Vascular Epiphytes In A Costa Rican Elfin Forest, May 2001, Duryea Delacroix
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Neotropical montane forests are characterized by their great abundance and high diversity of epiphytes. This study examines the distribution of epiphytic families in three zones of sixMeliosma vemicosa trees using single-rope climbing techniques to access the forest canopy. Nine-hundred ninety-seven vascular epiphytes from eight angiosperm families and division Pteridophyta occurred at the study site. Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, Araceae, Ericaceae, Piperaceae, and Gesneraceae were the most common angiosperm families. Pteridophytes accounted for 40% of the individuals present. Friedman's test for Shannon -Weiner index and Orchidaceae showed a significant Chi-squared value (X2 =8.4, and X2 =7.4) and tied p-value (p = 0.02, and …

Plan Colombia: The View From The Presidential Palace, Eduardo Pizano Mr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author, a former member of the Colombian Senate and now the General Secretary to the President of Colombia, discusses various misconceptions stemming from the uncertainty and confusion that permeated conference discussions involving U.S. policy in Colombia and the implementation of Plan Colombia. He makes several points that are both compelling and instructive. First, Colombia s sovereignty is being impinged by illegal narco-trafficking organizations and insurgent allies that threaten democratic governance from within. Second, of necessity, Plan Colombia must include strong military and counternarcotics components. Third, Colombia has the military forces necessary to deal with the violence in the country, …
