The Impact Of Hiv/Aids On Food Production (Focusing Mainly On Rural Farms In Sub-Saharan Africa) And The Effects On The Supply, Demand, And Wages Of Farm Labor, Muhammad Zubair Qamar

Theses & Honors Papers

Utilizing empirical data from studies conducted mainly by international organizations, such as the UNAIDS and the Food and Agriculture Organization , the thesis aims to strengthen the hypothesis that the higher the frequency of HIVIAIDS, mainly in rural African farm communities, the higher the impact there is on food production. Moreover, the supply, demand, and wages of farm labor are also affected by HIV/AIDS. To give a background of the conditions of disease, the first part of the thesis gives an overview of the history of disease. The history and possible origins of HIV/AIDS are delved into, after …

An Evaluation Of First Grade Children's Progress In Reading Using The Success For All Program, Alphefia L. Blount

Theses and Dissertations

This study measured the gains made by students in the Success for All program in the areas of word recognition and reading comprehension. Also, the study examined whether the variables of attendance, student behavior, homework completion and family support affected the results of those gains. The students participated in the Success for All reading program for sixteen weeks. Every eight weeks they were given an assessment to measure progress or regression in word recognition and reading comprehension. The students' reading groups were adjusted accordingly. At the end of the sixteen weeks they were administered the Jerry John's Basic Reading Inventory …

Paper Session Ii-C - Space Settlement Design: A Unifying Theme For Skill Development Through Scientific Inquiry, Susan N. Behel

Space Congress® Proceedings

Last July we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the first landing on the moon. Comparable scientific and technological advances will drive the 21st Century. Are our children ready? Recent studies by the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report that U.S. students’ performance is unacceptable. International ranking across 17 nations shows eighth grade students in the United Sates perform poorly in both science and mathematics. In a comparison of achievement in scientific inquiry, the U.S. ranks thirteenth among the 38 nations participating in the study. This decline is a serious national …

Trophic Dynamics Of Pinniped Populations In Alaska Using Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Ratios, Amy Hirons May 2001

Trophic Dynamics Of Pinniped Populations In Alaska Using Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Ratios, Amy Hirons

Oceanography Faculty Theses and Dissertations

Trophic changes in populations of Stellar sea lions (Eumetorias jubatus), northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) and harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) in the eastern Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska were studied using stable isotope analysis. Declining populations of all three species of pinnipeds prompted this study to determine if changes in diet, likely resulting from food limitation, contributed to the declines. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios were analyzed in the vibrissae (whiskers) and body tissues of pinnipeds from 1993-1998 and compared with muscle tissue from prey species during the same time period to determine pinniped trophic dynamics. Vibrissae growth …
