Why Retire The Feminization Of Poverty Construct?, Athena D. Mutua Jan 2001

Why Retire The Feminization Of Poverty Construct?, Athena D. Mutua

Journal Articles

The "feminization of poverty" concept should be retired, if it has not already been so. It should be retired, even though the concept has been extremely powerful as a discursive construct. In a phrase, the idea captured a seemingly universal phenomenon, inspired theoretical research into the nexus between women and poverty, and summoned coalitions of women by marking an agenda for, and among, women across the boundaries of race, ethnicity, and nationality. In short, it has been a war cry, demanding and framing analyses of women's poverty, and justifying and inspiring women's collective action. Nevertheless, the feminization of poverty construct …

A Comparison Of Health Curricula At Selected Rural Iowa Secondary Schools To A Recommended Model, Lowen Paul Anderson

Graduate Research Papers

The importance of educating the youth of today about healthy lifestyles cannot be overstated. In the United States the top four causes of death in 1998, each lifestyle-related, were (1) heart disease - 724,859 deaths, (2) cancer - 541,532, (3) stroke - 158,448, and (4) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease - 112,584, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2001 ). Fifteen years ago Kolbe (1986) identified the same top three leading causes of death and reported that they develop mainly from lifestyle habits.

The first encounter youth usually have with formal health education is in school. …

Such programs can be extended across the curriculum to utilize the functions in other areas. These connections across the curriculum can be enhanced through the different genres of literature.

In this article, a literature base was integrated into the science area of the curriculum. A science unit on pumpkins was developed for first grade children with quality literature and related expressive activities that extended the children's literacy and their understanding of plants. Teacher-directed activities were presented along with learning centers.

The Effect Of Anaerobic Exercise On The Thermic Effect Of Food, Charlene Marie Denzer Jan 2001

The Effect Of Anaerobic Exercise On The Thermic Effect Of Food, Charlene Marie Denzer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The thermic effect of food (TEF) is the increment in energy expenditure above resting metabolic rate associated with the cost of absorption, metabolism, and storage of food. Previous studies have shown that TEF is enhanced by aerobic exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine if a similar effect occurs with anaerobic exercise (weight lifting). VO2 was measured after ingestion of a 660 kcal meal with and without prior completion of a weight-training regimen. TEF was 42% higher after the exercise trial (t = 2.539, p < .017), compared with the control trial. These results indicate that prior anaerobic exercise also leads to an enhanced TEF.

Microbial Implications For Structural Integrity During Nuclear Waste Storage, Terry Ann Leilani Else Jan 2001

Microbial Implications For Structural Integrity During Nuclear Waste Storage, Terry Ann Leilani Else

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The study of microorganisms in oligotrophic environments is vital to understanding the geology and ecology of Nevada, and in particular, Yucca Mountain and the Nevada Test Site. Native to the Yucca Mountain tuff and to the Nevada Test Site soil are microorganisms, existing in biofilms, which are capable of corroding metals, and producing acids or enzymes that can degrade materials such as wood and cardboard. Studying the environmental conditions that could promote the growth of such microorganisms is essential for the modeling of the Yucca Mountain repository and the waste burial program on the Nevada Test Site. The first phase …

Acclimation To Hypoxia Increases Survival Time Of Zebrafish, Danio Rerio, During Lethal Hypoxia, Bernard B. Rees, F Sudradjat, J W. Love

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Survivorship of zebrafish, Danio rerio, was measured during lethal hypoxic stress after pretreatment in water at either ambient oxygen or at a lowered, but nonlethal, level of oxygen. Acclimation to nonlethal hypoxia (pO2 @ 15 Torr; ca. 10% air-saturation) for 48 hr significantly extended survival time during more severe hypoxia (pO2 @ 8 Torr; ca. 5% air-saturation) compared to survival of individuals with no prior hypoxic exposure. The magnitude of the acclimation effect depended upon the sex of the fish: hypoxia pretreatment increased the survival times of males by a factor of approximately 9 and that of females by a …

Fallow Versus Wheat Cropping Of Unamendedand Manure-Amended Soils Related To Mycorrhizal Colonization, Yield, And Plant Nutrition Of Dry Bean And Sweet Corn, Brett L. Allen, Von D. Jolley, Charles W. Robbins, Larry L. Freeborn Jan 2001

Fallow Versus Wheat Cropping Of Unamendedand Manure-Amended Soils Related To Mycorrhizal Colonization, Yield, And Plant Nutrition Of Dry Bean And Sweet Corn, Brett L. Allen, Von D. Jolley, Charles W. Robbins, Larry L. Freeborn

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Previous studies reported manure application to eroded Portneuf silt loam soil (Coarse-silty, mixed, superactive, Durinodic Xeric Haplocalcid) improved dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L., cv. Viva) yield to levels of topsoil. These yield increases only correlated with whole-plant zinc (Zn) concentration and soil organic matter. This might be related to enhanced arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization stimulated by manure application. A greenhouse study with dry bean suggested a relationship between manure application, increased AM colonization, and whole-plant Zn uptake, while field studies with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and sweet corn (Zea mays L.) did not. To clarify the apparent …

Methyl-Β-Cyclodextrin: An Alternative Carrier For Intravenous Infusion Of Palmitate During Tracer Studies In Swine (Sus Scrofa Domestica), Diane Wray-Cahen, Thomas J. Caperna, Norman C. Steele

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Fatty acid-free albumin has been the standard carrier for intravenous infusion of fatty acids to study in vivo lipid metabolism. However, subjects can have adverse reactions to infusion of albumin. We sought an alternative to albumin as a carrier for intravenous infusion of fatty acids, using the pig as a model. Cyclodextrins are naturally occurring water-soluble molecules that can serve as carriers for lipid-soluble compounds. 13C-palmitate was complexed to either 20% methyl-β-cyclodextrin, 20% 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin, or 5% porcine albumin (isotopic purity of infusates: 99.22±0.06%). 13C-palmitate-albumin was infused under fed conditions and 13C-palmitate-methyl-β-cyclodextrin was infused under fasted and fed …

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

Providing excellent care for a dying patient is something all patients deserve. Hospices and palliative care centers exist in many areas to aid primary care physicians and patients through this difficult time. It is important to remember that most patients want to prepare for death, if at all possible. Everyone does this in his or her own way, but oftentimes concern about pain and symptom management interfere with this very involved and valuable process. Being prepared to treat these symptoms as well as addressing your patient's emotional needs is imperative. Referral to a hospice, if possible, will only strengthen the …

Renal Function In Suckling And Fasting Pups Of The Northern Elephant Seal, Dorian S. Houser, Daniel E E. Crocker, Paul M. Webb, Daniel P. Costa

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Elephant seals fast for prolonged periods without access to water. This is made possible, in part, by reductions in urine production. However, the mechanisms involved in reducing urine production are not understood. In this study, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was measured in five northern elephant seal pups (Mirounga angustirostris) via the inulin clearance technique. Measurements were made during day 9 and day 18–22 of nursing and the second and eighth week of the postweaning fast. Plasma aldosterone and cortisol concentrations, quantified by radioimmunoassay, were measured in eight other weanlings during the second and eighth week of the fast. …

Microenterprise Lending To Female Entrepreneurs: Sacrificing Economic Growth For Poverty Alleviation?, Michael Kevane, Bruce Wydick Jan 2001

Microenterprise Lending To Female Entrepreneurs: Sacrificing Economic Growth For Poverty Alleviation?, Michael Kevane, Bruce Wydick

Economics

This research compares the performance of female and male entrepreneurs in a microenterprise credit program in Guatemala. Previous research and field practice has suggested that targeting credit at female borrowers allows for more substantial increases in household welfare, but that male entrepreneurs may more aggressively expand enterprises when given access to credit. In this paper, we develop a model that seeks to clarify why we might expect gender differences in economic responses to credit access. In general, our empirical results reveal that gender differences in economic responses to credit access are surprisingly small. However, we find that female entrepreneurs in …

Reinventing The Deal: A Sequential Approach To Analyzing Claims For Enforcement Of Modified Sales Contracts, Irma S. Russell Jan 2001

Reinventing The Deal: A Sequential Approach To Analyzing Claims For Enforcement Of Modified Sales Contracts, Irma S. Russell

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article considers whether providing additional content to the concept of good faith in the area of contract modification is possible or desirable. The article explores the modification puzzle and the issues of erratic justice that result from the nebulous nature of the UCC test, and evaluates an alternative test (the sequential approach) that scrutinizes each step of the modification process and imports the standard of reasonable grounds into this context.

Part II discusses terminology and fundamental concepts in this area of law, including the reasons for seeking a modification, the steps of a modification, and the typical defense to …

Induction Of Resistance In Field Grown Soybean By The Bean Leaf Beetle, Cerotoma Trifurcata (Forster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Parimi Srinivas, Stephen D. Danielson Jan 2001

Induction Of Resistance In Field Grown Soybean By The Bean Leaf Beetle, Cerotoma Trifurcata (Forster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Parimi Srinivas, Stephen D. Danielson

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

A study was conducted during the summer of 1998 with soybean cultivar Colfax, germplasm line HC95-24MB and susceptible cultivar Williams 82 to investigate induced resistance in soybean. Bean leaf beetle adults were used to induce resistance in field and also in the dual-choice feeding preference tests that were done in the laboratory to assess induction. Pair-wise comparisons of leaflets from induced and control plants demonstrated that induced resistance was present. Preference index (PI) values were similar in the three soybean entries and were not significantly different. Further investigation is necessary to fully understand induced resistance under field conditions in soybean-insect …

The Aspergillus Nidulans Snt Genes Are Required For The Regulation Of Septum Formation And Cell Cycle Checkpoints, Peter R. Kraus, Steven D. Harris Jan 2001

The Aspergillus Nidulans Snt Genes Are Required For The Regulation Of Septum Formation And Cell Cycle Checkpoints, Peter R. Kraus, Steven D. Harris

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

In Aspergillus nidulans, germinating conidia undergo multiple rounds of nuclear division before forming a septum. Previous genetic results suggest that the ability to separate nuclear division and septum formation depends upon a threshold level of activity of the cyclin-dependent kinase NIMXcdk1. Mutations in nimX and nimT, the gene encoding the NIMXcdk1-activating phosphatase, have revealed that Tyr-15 phosphorylation is important for determining the timing of the formation of the first septum. Here, we describe a screen for suppressors of nimT23 (snt), designed to identify additional components of the pathway regulating septum formation. We show that a subset …

Crop Potassium Nutrition – Implications For Fertilizer Recommendations, Achim R. Dobermann Jan 2001

Crop Potassium Nutrition – Implications For Fertilizer Recommendations, Achim R. Dobermann

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

During the past 35 years, average corn yields in the North Central Region (NCR) have increased at a rate of 1.7 bu/acre per year, mainly due to the adoption of improved crop management technologies and genetic improvement of corn hybrids. Fertilizer K rates used on corn are typically within a range of 0 to 110 lb K2O/acre, but average usage varies widely among states. Commercial fertilizer use rose sharply in the 1960s and 1970s, but corn yield increases since 1980 were achieved with stagnating fertilizer-N use and declining rates of P and K. Signs of emerging K deficiencies …

Light-Saturated Co2 Assimilation Rates Of Corn And Velvetleaf In Response To Leaf Nitrogen And Development Stage, John L. Lindquist Jan 2001

Light-Saturated Co2 Assimilation Rates Of Corn And Velvetleaf In Response To Leaf Nitrogen And Development Stage, John L. Lindquist

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Single-leaf CO2 assimilation rate under saturating light (CA) varies as a function of leaf nitrogen content per unit leaf area (NL). Measured CA for many crop species also declines with developmental stage. Because these relationships may have strong implications for crop–weed competition, a field experiment was conducted to quantify corn and velvetleaf CA as influenced by leaf NL and stage of development. Crop and weed CA were measured on the most recent fully expanded leaves of plants grown in four nitrogen (N) application treatments. Both corn and velvetleaf CA increased …
