An Analysis Of A Case Study Of A Secondary Alternative Education Program In Brazil: Lessons For The United States, Charlene Marette Claye
An Analysis Of A Case Study Of A Secondary Alternative Education Program In Brazil: Lessons For The United States, Charlene Marette Claye
Theses and Dissertations
This research study examined the effect of the Freirean Theory of Education on one alternative secondary education program for at-risk students in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. The learning theory, curriculum, and instructional methods were examined to determine the extent of the influence of Paulo Freire's Theory of Education, the extent of practice, and the extent to which faculty, students, and community members think it should be practiced. From this research, lessons were abstracted for use in schools in the United States. Brazil was chosen because of its shared history with the United States of slavery, colonialism, and oppression of people …

Student Drug-Testing Effects In Selected Arkansas Secondary Schools, David D. Bangs
Theses and Dissertations
This study was to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference in the mean number of student drug and alcohol discipline infractions among ten Arkansas high schools before and after an intervention of a mandatory random drug-testing intervention program for extracurricular activities. The assessment data used in this study were the totals of drug and alcohol discipline incidents or infractions at ten Arkansas secondary schools. The data collection was compiled from each school's administration using the state APSCN services. A survey instrument was completed with the appropriate annual data needed for the study. The annual data consisted of the …
Epidemiology Of Deviance, Gordon A. Crews
Epidemiology Of Deviance, Gordon A. Crews
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Deviance (Goode, 1997), in a general sense, is behavior that some members of a given society will find “offensive”. It is behavior which brings about, or would bring about if it were discovered, disapproval, punishment, condemnation, or hostility from another. This is any behavior that is likely to get the actor into “trouble”. Deviance is behavior which is considered to be outside the “bounds” of a given group or society. Another definition, in a more working sense, is “any departure from a social norm which does or could provoke sanctions” (p. 37).

City Of Edmond V. Robinson: The Coercion-Standing Test-A New Approach To Religious Symbols Under The Establishment Clause?, David S. Hill
City Of Edmond V. Robinson: The Coercion-Standing Test-A New Approach To Religious Symbols Under The Establishment Clause?, David S. Hill
Utah Law Review
Establishment Clause jurisprudence is fraught with a myriad of competing philosophies and intricate tests. Among commentators, judges, and lawyers, no one is completely satisfied with any of the approaches created thus far. Such conflict and complexity invites the temptation to simplify matters by employing more heavy-handed approaches aimed at displacing ambiguities with absolutes, or refusing to address them at all. However, when dealing with a sensitive topic like religious liberty, more sensitive tools must be used. The imperfection of the endorsement test may not always yield the best results, but it does address many of the viable constitutional concerns inherent …
Working Across Borders: Global Restructuring And Women's Work, Donna E. Young
Working Across Borders: Global Restructuring And Women's Work, Donna E. Young
Utah Law Review
In the last quarter century, economic globalization has intensified. Multinational corporations have increased their global influence to an astonishing degree. Global restructuring aids corporations in crossing national borders in search of conditions that increase production and profit. Access to cheap, unregulated or underregulated labor is critical to this process. Corporate interests have used domestic and international laws to their benefit. It is essential that women do the same. Immigrants, women, people of color, gays and lesbians, and poor people, are all at a marked disadvantage vis-a-vis multinational corporations and financial institutions. The latter have shaped and benefitted from laws fundamentally …
Mormons In The Press: Reactions To The 1901 Opening Of The Japan Mission, Shinji Takagi
Mormons In The Press: Reactions To The 1901 Opening Of The Japan Mission, Shinji Takagi
BYU Studies
During the first month when a Mormon Apostle and three missionaries arrived to begin proselytizing work in Japan, the local and national press published at least 160 articles on Mormonism, many of the articles appearing on the front page. The media attention was unprecedented for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in that country. Here the author explores the reaction from the Japanese press toward Mormons, the social and historical context that led to such interest, and some of the media controversies that arose. The author concludes that one of the biggest reasons Mormons received such attention when …
Television And Societal Effects: An Analysis Of Media Images Of African-Americans In Historical Context, Sherri L. Burr
Television And Societal Effects: An Analysis Of Media Images Of African-Americans In Historical Context, Sherri L. Burr
Faculty Scholarship
This paper takes a historical approach to the depictions of African-Americans in television in the five decades since the 1950s and links those images to the changing roles and perceptions of African-Americans in society. Part I discusses the various television shows from the 1950s to the 1990s that featured African-Americans and have had a societal impact. Part II analyzes the chicken/egg relationship between networks and advertisers and asks whether television, given the economic forces affecting it, can be used as a force for change. Part III explores how these television images have affected foreigners and children. Television remains "without a …
Safeguarding Juror Privacy: A New Framework For Court Policies And Procedures, Paula Hannaford-Agor
Safeguarding Juror Privacy: A New Framework For Court Policies And Procedures, Paula Hannaford-Agor
Faculty Publications
This article briefly discusses the difficulty courts face in balancing the privacy of citizens summoned for jury service with the rights of litigants and the public to information about those individuals. I propose that focusing on the content of the information requested of prospective jurors and the purposes for which juror information is used by courts provides a more helpful analysis than the legal framework traditionally employed in case law. Specifically, I argue that distinguishing between information that is relevant and information that is not relevant to the fairness or impartiality of prospective jurors should be the primary analytical framework …

Towards The Exact Value Of The Ramsey Number R(3, 3, 4), Konrad Piwakowski, Stanislaw Radziszowski
Articles
The classical Ramsey number R(r_1,...,r_k) is the least n > 0 such that there is no k-coloring of the edges of K_n which does not contain any monochromatic complete subgraph K_ri in color i, for all 1 2). the only known nontrivial value is R(3,3,3) = 17. The only other case whose evaluation does not look hopeless is R(3,3,4), which currently is known to be equal to 30 or 31 by an earlier work of the authors. We report on progress towards deciding which of these tow is the correct value. Using computer algorithms we show that any critical coloring of …

The Vulcan Photometer: A Dedicated Photometer For Extrasolar Planet Searches, William J. Borucki, Douglas Caldwell, David G. Koch, Larry D. Webster, Jon M. Jenkins, Zoran Ninkov, Robert Showen
Articles
A small CCD photometer dedicated to the detection of extrasolar planets has been developed and put into operation at Mount Hamilton, California. It simultaneously monitors 6000 stars brighter than 13th magnitude in its 49 deg2 field of view. Observations are conducted all night every clear night of the year. A single field is monitored at a cadence of eight images per hour for a period of about 3 months. When the data are folded for the purpose of discovering low-amplitude transits, transit amplitudes of 1% are readily detected. This precision is sufficient to find Jovian-size planets orbiting solar-like stars, which …

Imaging Of Laser-Plasma X-Ray Emission With Charge-Injection Devices, Frederic J. Marshall, Thomas Ohki, D. Mcinnis, Zoran Ninkov, J. Carbone
Articles
This work details the method of obtaining time-integrated images of laser–plasma x-ray emission using charge-injection devices (CIDs), as has been demonstrated on the University of Rochester’s 60-beam UV OMEGA laser facility [T. R. Boehly et al., Opt. Commun. 133, 495 (1997)]. The CID has an architecture similar to a charge-coupled device. The differences make them more resistant to radiation damage and, therefore, more appropriate for some application in laser–plasma x-ray imaging. CID-recorded images have been obtained with x-ray pinhole cameras, x-ray microscopes, x-ray spectrometers, and monochromatic x-ray imaging systems. Simultaneous images obtained on these systems with calibrated x-ray film have …
Solar And Lunar Radiometric Calibration, Emmett Ientilucci, John Schott, Matthew Banta
Solar And Lunar Radiometric Calibration, Emmett Ientilucci, John Schott, Matthew Banta
Articles
The current generation of Earth-imaging satellites is used primarily to produce photographic quality images that are corrected for inherent non-uniformity in the focal plane (flat-fielding) and non-linearity in the sensor. The next generation of satellites requires the extraction of target reflectance with 1-2% uncertainty from these images. This requires the payload to be radiometrically calibrated to 1% uncertainty, or less. In order to achieve these levels of uncertainty, a radiometric standard is needed that is accessible from low Earth-orbit. Unfortunately, there is no such standard currently available. One common approach is to utilize man-made source standards that have calibration traceable …

And Now A Word About Secular Humanism, Spirituality, And The Practice Of Justice And Conflict Resolution, Carrie Menkel-Meadow
And Now A Word About Secular Humanism, Spirituality, And The Practice Of Justice And Conflict Resolution, Carrie Menkel-Meadow
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The papers presented in this Dialogue raise very important and moving questions about the relationship of spirituality, moral values, and religion to the practice of law generally, and the practice of conflict resolution specifically. In this Commentary, I want to focus on two related questions: First, where do our moral values, spirituality, and sense of communion or connection come from? And second, how do values derived from various sources of secular humanism inform our practices? For some of us, organized religion is not the primary source of our commitment to the "moral" values that inform our legal and conflict resolution …

Collusion And Collective Action In The Patent System: A Proposal For Patent Bounties, John R. Thomas
Collusion And Collective Action In The Patent System: A Proposal For Patent Bounties, John R. Thomas
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Persistent commentary contends that the Patent Office is issuing patents that appropriate public domain concepts at an alarming frequency. Complaints of low patent quality enjoy growing resonance with regard to business methods, computer software, and other inventions for which patents were not traditionally sought. In this article, Professor Jay Thomas explains how the judiciary's lenient view of patentable subject matter and utility standards, along with miserly congressional funding policies, have rendered the Patent Office an increasingly porous agency. Professor Thomas next reviews existing proposals for improving patent quality, including the conventional wisdom that adoption of an opposition system will contribute …

Translating Exile In Panait Istrati's "Mes Departs", Samuel Beckett's "Fin De Partie" And Selected Poems By Paul Celan., Ina Alice Pfitzner
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Translation and exile are two phenomena that marked life in the twentieth century, especially in Europe, and have therefore left their traces in French literature as well. Translation from one language to another is a heightened form of the translation process inherent in any writing. Exile in a foreign country, linguistic exile, is an aggravated form of the exile every human being experiences at some point. Parting from Lucian Blaga's concept of "mioritic space," which is based on the Romanian myth of Mioritza, as well as Walter Benjamin's essay "Die Aufgabe des Ubersetzers" [The Task of the Translator], this study …
Optimization Of Agrobacterium-Mediated Genetic Transformation Of Soybean Using Glufosinate As A Selective Agent., Shaomian Yao
Optimization Of Agrobacterium-Mediated Genetic Transformation Of Soybean Using Glufosinate As A Selective Agent., Shaomian Yao
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr] is one of the most important oil crops. Genetic transformation techniques can provide new tools for soybean improvement. The production of transgenic soybean has been limited. This research integrated a modified soybean regeneration system into a transformation protocol to optimize the production of transgenic soybean. Soybean hypocotyls and cotyledonary nodes were cultured on Gamborg B5 medium containing thidiazuron (TDZ). TDZ at 0.16 muM was found superior to other concentrations for inducing multiple shoot formation. Explants isolated from seedlings germinated on medium containing 6-benzyl-aminopurine (BAP) greater than 7 muM produced more multiple shoots than when on …
