Buku-Buku Sastera Terbitan Dbp Sarawak 1988-1998 : Penerimaan Dan Kedudukannya Di Sarawak, Hazami Jahari

Student Works (2000-2009)

The community's interest towards literature is seen to be on the decline. Neither do they seem to understand nor appreciate the significance of literature in molding the ways of thoughts of the people. This is due to the ever increasing cost of living, wide range of entertainment media and the government policy. The role and significance of literature no longer becomes predominant. Thus this study aims at reassessing the status of literature in the daily life of the community, especially the students and teachers of secondary schools in Sarawak. The methods being applied are through questionnaires focusing on the statistics …

Kajian Keberkesanan Dasar Anti Dadah Malaysia, Ismail Haji Ahmad

Student Works (2000-2009)

The Study reveals new important findings about the effectiveness of Malaysian Anti-Drug Policy. Based on the two levels of analysis; the policy itself and the surveyed respondents, the study shows that drug problem remain critical due to the lack of enforcement and rehabilitation. This resulted in the rise of the drug addiction and trafficking cases over the last five years (1996-2000). The newly established anti drug agencies failed, relative to their predecessors, to curtail such problems. Rehabilitation programmes which largely focused 0n new addicts provided greater room for the hardcore addicts to have a direct contact with the potential addicts …

Mass Media Ethics Vs. Ethnicity : The Cuban American National Foundation's Battle With The Miami Herald, Michelle M. Cobas

LSU Master's Theses

In 1992, a prominent Cuban-American organization, the Cuban American National Foundation, launched a full-scale campaign against the Miami Herald following an editorial against the Cuban Democracy Act, sponsored by Congressman Robert Torricelli, (D-NJ). The bill, which the Foundation endorsed and helped craft, was aimed at tightening the loopholes on the U.S. embargo against Cuba. Two men-CANF Chairman Jorge Mas Canosa and Herald publisher David Lawrence-represented opposing sides of the feud. CANF galvanized the exile community to support its side of the debate. The Herald used its opinion and editorial pages to argue against Mas's charges that the newspaper attacked the …

Does International Human Rights Law Make A Difference?, Douglass Cassel Jan 2001

Does International Human Rights Law Make A Difference?, Douglass Cassel

Journal Articles

Does international human rights law make a difference? Does it protect rights in practice? The importance of these questions for rights protection is obvious: the institutions of international human rights law deserve our energetic support only to the extent they contribute meaningfully to protection of rights, or at least promise eventually to do so. Moreover, at the moment these questions have added urgency. They underlie an ongoing debate, fomented in part by this Journal, on the extent to which the United States should be prepared to cede degrees of its national sovereignty to international human rights institutions, in return for …

Divorce And The Catholic Lawyer, John J. Coughlin Jan 2001

Divorce And The Catholic Lawyer, John J. Coughlin

Journal Articles

On January 28, 2002, Pope John Paul II focused his annual address to the officials of the Roman Rota on the topic of the indissolubility of marriage. At the conclusion of this theological and canonical analysis, the Holy Father made a few short statements cautioning civil lawyers about divorces cases. The following day, a story in The New York Times carried the headline "John Paul Says Catholic Bar Must Refuse Divorce Cases." The article construed the pope's reference as a blanket prohibition against Catholic lawyers handling divorce cases. It further questioned whether the prohibition contradicted the Pontiff's prior emphasis on …

Contracting With Electronic Agents, Anthony J. Bellia Jr. Jan 2001

Contracting With Electronic Agents, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.

Journal Articles

Established contract doctrine provides no clear answer to the question whether exchanges arranged by the interaction of electronic agents are enforceable. This Article explores whether the law should enforce exchanges arranged by the interaction of electronic agents. It examine how normative theories of contractual obligation inform the issue, with an eye toward the strengths and weaknesses of each theory. The theories that most strongly support the enforcement of exchanges arranged by electronic agents, this Article explains, are those that ground contractual obligation in protecting the ability of individuals to pursue their reasonable objectives through reliable arrangements.

Voluntary Campaign Finance Reform, John Copeland Nagle Jan 2001

Voluntary Campaign Finance Reform, John Copeland Nagle

Journal Articles

Any effort to achieve voluntary campaign finance reform raises two questions: Is it really voluntary, and does it really work? In Part I of this Essay, I examine the voluntariness of "voluntary" campaign finance reform. Agreements like that reached by Clinton and Lazio last year—what I term "purely voluntary agreements"—satisfy most legal tests for voluntariness. By contrast, the voluntariness of spending limits and other campaign restrictions that are imposed as a condition for receiving government funding of a political campaign—what I term "governmentally induced agreements"—is more doubtful. The extant jurisprudence recognizes that Buckley prohibits governmental actions that are more coercive …

On Law And Chastity, Robert E. Rodes Jan 2001

On Law And Chastity, Robert E. Rodes

Journal Articles

When Dwight Eisenhower was President, and the baby boomers of today were but gleams in the eyes of their monogamous parents, it was well understood that chastity was the prevailing social norm.

On the whole, the standard was reinforced by the social ambiance. It was not at all difficult for people of relatively chaste mind to go for days, sometimes weeks, without encountering much of anything at which they could justly take offense. In most environments, social discourse was relatively free of explicit sex, and even sexual innuendo was far from pervasive. Films and broadcasting were closely censored, and detailed …

Religious Claims And The Dynamics Of Argument, M. Cathleen Kaveny Jan 2001

Religious Claims And The Dynamics Of Argument, M. Cathleen Kaveny

Journal Articles

This Article investigates the questions whether and when religious claims may enter into public debate about important political issues by considering the purposes of argument in the public square. These purposes include: (1) argument as self-disclosure; (2) argument as persuasion; and (3) argument as bulwark against engagement with the ideas of others. The Article argues that restrictions on the use of religious claims in public deliberations and discussion impede the legitimate functions of public argument as self-disclosing and persuasive activities. In contrast, such restrictions contribute to the use of argument as bulwark, which is arguably destructive to public deliberation in …

The Supreme Court Justice And "Boring" Cases, Neil M. Richards Jan 2001

The Supreme Court Justice And "Boring" Cases, Neil M. Richards

Scholarship@WashULaw

This is a short essay discussing the phenomenon of boring cases at the Supreme Court. It examines two letters written by Supreme Court Justices to sick colleagues–a 1903 letter from Chief Justice E.D. White to William Day, and a 1941 letter from William O. Douglas to Hugo Black. The essay argues that one true and underappreciated measure of the worth of a Supreme Court Justice is not merely their ability to be (or at least appear to be) brilliant in the once-a-decade blockbuster cases. Instead, in selecting Supreme Court Justices, we should look just as much at their ability to …

Two Sides Of A River: Mormon Transmigration Through Quincy, Illinois, And Hannibal, Missouri, Fred E. Woods Jan 2001

Two Sides Of A River: Mormon Transmigration Through Quincy, Illinois, And Hannibal, Missouri, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

The infamous extermination order issued 27 October 1838 by Missouri Governor Lilburn W. Boggs caused thousands of Latter-day Saints to flee the state and seek refuge in Illinois across the Mississippi River. Illinois, established in 1817, had high hopes for its future, but just two decades later it was smitten, like the rest of America, with the economic depression of 1837. In such a needy condition, the people Illinois welcomed the Mormon migrants for three central reasons. Financially motivated, the state viewed the Latter-day Saint influx as an opportunity to raise its population to boost the economy through the collection …

Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide Decreases Lipopolysaccharide (Lps)-Induced Cell Death In Rat Alveolar Macrophages., William Scott Poling Jan 2001

Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide Decreases Lipopolysaccharide (Lps)-Induced Cell Death In Rat Alveolar Macrophages., William Scott Poling

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a potent anti-inflammatory neuropeptide that inhibits the function of activated macrophages, inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α and enhances production of the antiinflammatory cytokine IL-10 in lipopolysacharide (LPS)-stimulated peritoneal macrophages. The present study describes the effect of VIP on cell death resulting from LPS exposure on rat alveolar macrophages in vitro. The experiments show that VIP attenuates cell death in LPS-treated alveolar macrophages. The results suggest that the anti-inflammatory action of VIP in LPS-treated lungs may be important in limiting pulmonary inflammatory responses to LPS

Encyclopedia Of Jihad, Alexei Malashenko, Stephen R. Bowers, Valeria Ciobanu Jan 2001

Encyclopedia Of Jihad, Alexei Malashenko, Stephen R. Bowers, Valeria Ciobanu

The Western powers are the chief targets of a global Islamic jihad. Once believed to be a relic of history, the notion of Islamic jihad regained a political role in the 1980s. There are multiple meanings of the term jihad. While “great jihad” implies peaceful activity “small jihad” denotes the use of violence. There has never been a war in which Christians and Muslims have participated where the latter has not appealed to the slogan of holy war. The failure of Iran’s “white revolution” in 1979 set the stage for development of violent strategies against the West. The Chechen conflict …

Islam In The North Caucasus: A People Divided, Yavus Akhmadov, Stephen R. Bowers, Marion T. Doss, Jr.

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Religious diversity has had a dramatic impact on the development of the North Caucasus region. People do not indentify primarily with either a national or international Islamic community. The fundamentalist Vakhabite community has become a major regional force during the past decade in spite of numerous efforts to suppress its influence. Official suppression of the Vakhabites has resulted in the emergence of a clandestine Vakhabite network supported from abroad. Islamic radicals throughout the regions (mostly Saudi and North African Arabs) have joined with the Khattab group in order to receive military training in camps which are operated to support Arab …
