Facts About Adolescents From The Demographic And Health Survey—Statistical Tables For Program Planning: Ghana 1998, Population Council Jan 2001

Facts About Adolescents From The Demographic And Health Survey—Statistical Tables For Program Planning: Ghana 1998, Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Population Council initiated its work on adolescents in the mid-1990s. At that time, those advocating greater attention to adolescent issues were concerned about adolescent fertility—particularly outside of marriage—and adolescent “risk-taking” behavior. As an international scientific organization with its mandate centered around the needs of developing countries, the Council sought a more nuanced and context-specific understanding of the problems confronting adolescents in the developing world. In working with colleagues inside and outside the Council, it became clear that information on adolescents, and the way data are organized, were limiting the ability to understand the diversity of their experiences or to …

Ab(1-42) And Aluminum Induce Stress In The Endoplasmic Reticulum In Rabbit Hippocampus, Involving Nuclear Translocation Of Gadd 153 And Nf-Kb, David A. Dewitt

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Apoptosis may represent a prominent form of neuronal death in chronic neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Although apoptosis under mitochondrial control has received considerable attention, mechanisms used within the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and nucleus in mediating apoptotic signals are not well understood. A growing body of evidence is emerging from different studies which suggests an active role for the ER in regulating apoptosis. Disturbances of ER function have been shown to trigger two different apoptotic pathways; one involves cross-talk with mitochondria and is regulated by the antiapoptotic Bcl-2, and the second is characterized by the activation of caspase-12. Also, …

Gdnf Protects Against Aluminum-Induced Apoptosis In Rabbits By Upregulating Bcl-2 And Bcl-Xl And Inhibiting Mitochondrial Bax Translocation, David A. Dewitt, Othman Ghribi, Mary M. Herman, Michael S. Forbes, John Savory Jan 2001

Gdnf Protects Against Aluminum-Induced Apoptosis In Rabbits By Upregulating Bcl-2 And Bcl-Xl And Inhibiting Mitochondrial Bax Translocation, David A. Dewitt, Othman Ghribi, Mary M. Herman, Michael S. Forbes, John Savory

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Direct (intracisternal) injection of aluminum complexes into rabbit brain results in a number of similarities with the neuropathological and biochemical changes observed in Alzheimer’s disease and provides the opportunity to assess early events in neurodegeneration. This mode of administration induces cytochrome c release from mitochondria, a decrease in Bcl-2 in both mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, Bax translocation into mitochondria, activation of caspase-3, and DNA fragmentation. Coadministration of glial cell neuronal-derived factor (GDNF) inhibits these Bcl-2 and Bax changes, upregulates Bcl-XL, and abolishes the caspase-3 activity. Furthermore, treatment with GDNF dramatically inhibits apoptosis, as assessed by the TUNEL technique for detecting …

The Reporting Of Sensitive Behavior Among Adolescents: A Methodological Experiment In Kenya, Barbara Mensch, Paul C. Hewett, Annabel Erulkar Jan 2001

The Reporting Of Sensitive Behavior Among Adolescents: A Methodological Experiment In Kenya, Barbara Mensch, Paul C. Hewett, Annabel Erulkar

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This paper assesses whether audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (audio-CASI), a technique designed in the United States to collect data on sensitive behaviors, is a feasible method of survey data collection in a developing-country setting and whether it produces more valid reporting of sexual activity and related behaviors than traditional survey methods. The analysis is based on interviews with nearly 4,400 unmarried adolescents aged 15-21 in Nyeri, a rural district of Kenya that was selected because previous research had indicated a wide discrepancy in the reporting of premarital sexual behavior between boys and girls. The study was based on a quasi-experimental design …

Social Networks And Contraceptive Dynamics In Southern Ghana, Mark R. Montgomery, Gebre-Egziabher Kiros, Dominic K. Agyeman, John B. Casterline, Peter Aglobitse, Paul C. Hewett Jan 2001

Social Networks And Contraceptive Dynamics In Southern Ghana, Mark R. Montgomery, Gebre-Egziabher Kiros, Dominic K. Agyeman, John B. Casterline, Peter Aglobitse, Paul C. Hewett

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

There is accumulating evidence that social diffusion processes affect the pace of the adoption of modern contraception in societies undergoing fertility transition. In settings where mortality has declined and many other social and economic changes are underway, decisions about contraception are fraught with uncertainty and risk. In such circumstances, couples may rely on other persons for information and guidance. In this paper, we examine the influence of informal social networks on the contraceptive behavior of reproductive-age women, using longitudinal data collected in six communities in southern Ghana. Our results confirm the hypothesis that adoption of modern contraception is strongly affected …

Sola No Eres Nada, Juntas Flotamos: El Movimiento Manuela Ramos, Judith Bruce, Debbie Rogow

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This edition of Quality/Calidad/Qualité discusses the Manuela Ramos Movement and its efforts to improve women’s health and well-being through a range of empowerment strategies in rural Peru. A joint project with USAID, named Reprosalud, demonstrates how combining the resources of an international donor with local women’s organizations allows a more organic and multifaceted family planning program to develop. Such programs can produce impressive improvements on a number of indicators, including contraceptive use.

Securities Fraud In Cyberspace: Reaching The Outer Limits Of The Federal Securities Laws, Constance Z. Wagner Jan 2001

Securities Fraud In Cyberspace: Reaching The Outer Limits Of The Federal Securities Laws, Constance Z. Wagner

Nebraska Law Review

Securities regulation is an area of the law in which existing rules are being rendered obsolete by technological developments. Recent Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement actions involving Internet fraud can be categorized as “cyberhype” and may involve fraud if the promoter makes material misrepresentations, fails to disclose its intention to dispose of its stock at a profit into the rising trading market that develops after such promoter's recommendation, or fails to disclose that it promoted the stock for compensation. This article focuses on the SEC lawsuit against Yun Soo Oh Park, a/k/a “Tokyo Joe,” a case that was settled …

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study, Z (trans-Zeatin) and ZR (trans-Zeatin Riboside) levels in the roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits of maize plants (Zea mays L.) were determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Plants were grown in media containing macro elements (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulphur and iron) in optimum, deficient and excess concentrations. According to the average Z values for all periods, the highest Z levels were determined in the roots of plants treated with excessive P (-P); in stems, female flowers treated with excessive K (-K) and in leaves and kernels treated with excessive Ca (-Ca). The highest …

Secreta Palinodia: La 'Contrautopía' De José Antonio Maravall Como Descargo De Conciencia, Aurora Hermida-Ruiz

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

En un reciente ensayo panorámico sobre la historiografía española del Renacimiento, Ottavio Di Camillo afirma que no existió ninguna interpretación del Renacimiento español digna de mención en el período intermedio entre Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo y José Antonio Maravall, o sea, desde finales del siglo XIX hasta mediados de la década de los 50: ‘For over a half a century no new interpretations of the Renaissance were advanced, even though there was a slight increase in the number of studies on particular humanists and Renaissance authors’.1 En la segunda entrega de este ensayo, Ottavio Di Camillo vuelve a insistir en …

Advanced Information Systems: Impact On Organizational Reality, Rolf D. Dixon Jan 2001

Advanced Information Systems: Impact On Organizational Reality, Rolf D. Dixon

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Today, with the proliferation of increasingly advanced information technologies in organizations, a significant challenge can be made to the traditional assumptions regarding the non-rationality of organizational behavior. It is the purpose of this paper to consider the effects of advanced information technologies on the spatial, structural, social, and informational processes of the organization and to suggest how this could, in fact, signal a return to the “rational” organization. This paper will consider the issue of organizational rationality in a normative manner with several propositions offered.

Negotiating A Policy Of Prudent Science And Proactive Law In The Brave New World Of Genetic Information, Sherwin Chen Jan 2001

Negotiating A Policy Of Prudent Science And Proactive Law In The Brave New World Of Genetic Information, Sherwin Chen

UC Law Journal

Continuing advances in the science of molecular genetics have produced technologies that are capable of transforming our most fundamental perceptions of life and death. The fruits of genetic research have enabled doctors to identify the sex of children before they are born, as well as estimate their chances for developing hundreds of types of diseases. Other technologies based on this science include new identification techniques, limited therapies, and even new forms of life. With these unprecedented and powerful new possibilities, it is clear that the social and legal dimensions of genetic research and related technologies deserve careful examination. The purpose …

Zr-Containing 4,4'-Oda/Pmda Polyimide Composites Parts I And Ii, Marvin Illingsworth, J. Betancourt, Liling He

Articles

The objective of this research is to improve the atomic oxygen resistance of KaptonTM, a polyimide (PI) made from pyromellitic acid dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA), while retaining or enhancing the desirable properties of the pure polymer. Toward this end, zirconium-containing complexes and polymers were used to make composites and blends. Tetra(acetylacetonato)zirconium(IV), Zr(acac)4, which is commercially available, was identified as the best zirconium-containing complex for enhancing the atomic oxygen resistance of polyimide composites of the 10 complexes screened. Films prepared from the commercially-available polyamic acid (PAA) of PMDA-ODA (DuPont) have good uniformity, flexibility, and tensile strength. A 24-layer 10% (mol) …
