An Empirical Investigation Of Four Tests For Interaction In The Context Of Factorial Analysis Of Covariance, Todd C. Headrick, George Vineyard Jan 2001

An Empirical Investigation Of Four Tests For Interaction In The Context Of Factorial Analysis Of Covariance, Todd C. Headrick, George Vineyard

Publications

The Type I error and power properties of the parametric F test and three nonparametric competitors were compared in terms of a 3x 4 factorial analysis of covariance layout. The focus of the study was on the test for interaction either in the presence and/or absence of main effects. A variety of conditional distributions, sample sizes, levels of variate and covariate correlation and treatment effect sizes were investigated. The Puri and Sen (1969a) test had ultra-conservative Type I error rates and power losses when main effect(s) were present. The adjusted rank transform (Blair & Sawilowsky,1990; Salter & Fawcett; 1993) had …

Innocent Of Empirical Rigor, Derry Ridgway Jan 2001

Innocent Of Empirical Rigor, Derry Ridgway

St. Thomas Law Review

The paper begins, as the research did, with a review of published judicial decisions concerning the medical care of children. It then examines the role played by medical science in those decisions. The review suggests that when American courts make determinations about children's medical care, they customarily do so without knowing or crediting the relevant and available science - a failure of comprehension - or without applying the available empirical knowledge to the case at hand - a failure of scientific reasoning - or both. The paper concludes with a proposal that might bring future decisions into better alignment with …

Exercising Self-Determination Without Jeopardising The Rights Of The Others: The Catalan Model, Puig I. Scotoni Jan 2001

Exercising Self-Determination Without Jeopardising The Rights Of The Others: The Catalan Model, Puig I. Scotoni

St. Thomas Law Review

I have entitled my remarks "Exercising self-determination without jeopardising the rights of the others: the Catalan model."' This is because present day Catalan nationalism strives to make the interests of Catalonia compatible with those of Spain and the European Union. In my opinion, such political restraint and flexibility is one of the most remarkable aspects of the Catalan model.

Indigenous Autonomy And Its Problems: A Vision From The Russian Far East, Petra Rethmann Jan 2001

Indigenous Autonomy And Its Problems: A Vision From The Russian Far East, Petra Rethmann

St. Thomas Law Review

This essay discusses one vision of self-determination among Luoravetlan women and men in the Chukotka peninsula in the Russian Far East. Self-determination can have many meanings, but the one this essay emphasizes is based on tradition: on the intricate connections between humans, animals, and land, with shared premises, close kin groups, and local production relations. Contemporary Luoravetlan women and men argue that self-determination is bound to fail if it does not take serious the complex interrelations between people and the land in which their social understandings are rooted, and through which their core institutions and values are ensured. This essay …

Becoming American: The Hmong American Experience, Kou Yang Jan 2001

Becoming American: The Hmong American Experience, Kou Yang

Ethnic Studies Review

Hmong Americans, who came from a pre-literate society and rural background, went through many acculturation barriers and have had many successes between the time they first arrived in 1975 and the year 2000. Their first decade was preoccupied with their struggle to overcome cultural shock and acculturation difficulties. The second decade is their turning point to be new Americans, beginning to run for political office, establish business enterprises, achieve in education, and reduce their high rate of unemployment and welfare participation. Hmong Americans in 2000 appeared to have achieved much, yet have some serious challenges still ahead.

From Chinatown To Gunga Din Highway: Notes On Frank Chin's Writing Strategy, Juan E. San Jr Jan 2001

From Chinatown To Gunga Din Highway: Notes On Frank Chin's Writing Strategy, Juan E. San Jr

Ethnic Studies Review

Exploring Frank Chin's work, particularly in his latest novel Gunga Din Highway, the essay endeavors to re-situate ethnic writing in the historical specificity of its inscription in the United States as a racial polity. This cognitive remapping of the literary field as reconfigured by multiculturalist liberalism may be accomplished by examining Chin's cultural politics. Chin's mode of strategic writing interrogates the modelminority myth and the premises of cultural nationalism. While it rejects the pluralist resolution of the traditional conflicts in the Chinese diaspora, Chin's satiric impulse proposes a defamiliarization of Asian American "common sense" adequate to provoke a revaluation of …

Using African American Perspectives To Promote A More Inclusive Understanding Of Human Communication Theory, Jim Schnell Jan 2001

Using African American Perspectives To Promote A More Inclusive Understanding Of Human Communication Theory, Jim Schnell

Ethnic Studies Review

This article addresses the use of African American perspectives as a means of promoting a more inclusive understanding of human communication theory. It describes contributions by African American scholars as they relate to providing a framework for inclusion of other under represented cultures in U.S. society (i.e. Asian American, Latino American, etc.). This objective is becoming more and more relevant because of the increased percentage of U.S. citizens who are of non-European origin. Common sense supports the position that an inclusive curriculum, representative of the many cultural groups that compose the U.S., will appeal to the diverse audience educated in …

Defending All-Male Education: A New Cultural Moment For A Renewed Debate, Stephen H. Webb Jan 2001

Defending All-Male Education: A New Cultural Moment For A Renewed Debate, Stephen H. Webb

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Although all-female schools still prosper and are defended by members of the academic elite, an all-male college has become a near-extinct species. Many people are surprised such a creature still exists. All-male colleges strike many as vestiges of male privilege. They evoke the traditional bastions of power that precluded women from advancing in public life. Single-sex education is not for everyone, but if our educational system is to be truly pluralistic, such an education should be an option. Single-sex education for both genders can be a constructive way to address problems plaguing not only education but the culture as a …

The Children's School: Lessons For Inclusion, Leadership, And School Success, Beth Lief Jan 2001

The Children's School: Lessons For Inclusion, Leadership, And School Success, Beth Lief

Fordham Urban Law Journal

In recent years education has evolved into the country's number one public concern. Presidential, gubernatorial, mayoral, and legislative candidates all claim to care about educating our children. Successful schools should be used by educators and policy-makers as models. In order to reproduce the success of these schools, the reasons for their success must be identified. A school's achievement data gives important indications of why it succeeds. There are also innumerable studies and reports listing factors enabling school success. The Children's School in Brooklyn, New York is a school worthy of study. The leadership is superb; teachers know their students and …

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 In Glioma Invasion, Nicole Danielle Sauers Jan 2001

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 In Glioma Invasion, Nicole Danielle Sauers

Master's Theses

Overexpression of matrix metalloproteinase 2, MMP-2, is correlated with highgrade gliomas in vivo. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether MMP-2 overexpression in glioma cell lines leads to increased invasion of glioma cells in vitro. The entire MMP-2 gene was isolated from U87, a glioma cell line known to have high expression of wild-type MMP-2. This :tvIMP-2 gene was inserted in a sense and antisense orientation into pCR3 .1 vectors with a CMV promoter to ensure high levels of expression. Glioma cell lines were transfected with the sense and antisense constructs, as well as the pCR3.l vector alone …

Dynamic Update Techniques For Online Maps And Attributes Data, Thanh H. Pham Jan 2001

Dynamic Update Techniques For Online Maps And Attributes Data, Thanh H. Pham

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Online databases containing geographic and related tabular data for maps and attributes often require continuous updates from widely distributed sources afield. For some applications, these data are dynamic, and thus are of little value if they do not reflect the latest information or changes. A status map that depicts graphically temporal data affecting accountability is an example of this type of data. How can accommodations be made collectively for the perpetual data updates in the database and the need to deliver online information in real time without making concessions? The goal of the dissertation was to analyze and evaluate techniques …

Professional Discipline Of Prosecutors: A Response To Professor Zacharias, Monroe H. Freedman

Hofstra Law Review

In a recent article, The Professional Discipline of Prosecutors, Professor Fred C. Zacharias reports the results of an empirical study he has conducted of disciplinary actions against prosecutors. Based on a computer search of reported cases, he concludes that there is an "overall trend of infrequent [disciplinary] prosecutions," suggesting "neglect or sloth" on the part of the authorities, and he properly calls for more effective use of professional discipline of prosecutors.

Eminent Domain, Exactions, And Railbanking: Can Recreational Trails Survive The Court’S Fifth Amendment Takings Jurisprudence?, Danaya C. Wright

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article attempts to locate the legal aspects of recreational trail development within the increasingly powerful property rights movement. The most complex result of this rising property rights rhetoric is a clear shift in constitutional takings doctrine to be more sympathetic to landowners' arguments. Thus, the interplay of takings decisions and trails development will be the focus of most of this article.

Part II provides a brief account of the legal structure of governmental land use controls and the current state of takings jurisprudence to form a basic background for the different ways in which recreational trails have been developed. …

Racial Profiling: A Status Report Of The Legal, Legislative, And Empirical Literature, Katheryn Russell-Brown

UF Law Faculty Publications

In recent years, there have been several widely-publicized cases in which racial profiling became police brutality. As well, there have been scores of famous Black men who have offered their personal accounts as victims of racial profiling. All of these have helped to propel the issue onto the nation's front burner. The varied responses to racial profiling indicate the range of groups affected by and concerned about the practice. Notably, this includes former President Bill Clinton, who shared his belief that racial profiling is a national problem. The issue of racial profiling has evoked a wide range of policy responses, …

β-Glucuronidase Assay For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli In Foods, Seref Tagi Jan 2001

β-Glucuronidase Assay For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli In Foods, Seref Tagi

Open Access Dissertations

Enzyme assays were developed for the measurement of β-D-glucuronide (GUS) as a rapid detection method for E. coli in food. A fluorescent assay utilizing 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide as substrate was optimized and tested with growth cultures of E. coli. A relationship between E. coli and the level of GUS activity was established. A chemiluminescent assay using a 1,2-dioxetene derivative as substrate was compared to the fluorescent assay, and was found to be 10x more sensitive. Anti-E. coli GUS antibodies were covalently immobilized on magnetic beads and used in a 30 min immunocapture method. GUS was recovered from E. coli grown at 37°C …

Characterization Of Interfacial Fracture Using Strain Fields, Vittorio Ricci Jan 2001

Characterization Of Interfacial Fracture Using Strain Fields, Vittorio Ricci

Open Access Dissertations

An experimental study was conducted to develop and introduce strain gage techniques as an effective and simple alternative experimental method to investigate interfacial fracture in isotropic-isotropic and isotropic-orthotropic bimaterials. The study looked to develop the requisite strain field equations and experimental techniques to obtain static and dynamic interfacial fracture parameters using strain gages and, in the static case, comparing to several optical experimental methods. In the first part of the study, the strain gage technique was compared to three widely used experimental techniques--photoelasticity, coherent gradient sensing (CGS), and caustics--as applied to the stationary interfacial crack problem. These experimental methods were …
