Assessment Of Operational Barriers And Impediments To Transit Use: Transit Information And Scheduling For Major Activity Centers, Jennifer Hardin, Lisa Tucker, Linda Callejas

CUTR Research Reports

The decision to use public transit as a means of alterative transportation is a somewhat complex process. The potential rider must know that a public transportation system is available, how to contact the public transportation system for information on how to use the system for each desired trip, where to go to catch a bus, how to recognize bus stops, which side of the street to stand on to catch a bus going to his destination, how to make transfers, the tare and tare media accepted for each trip, as well as how to read and understand bus system maps …

Finding A Third Way: The Use Of Public Engagement And Adr To Bring School Communities Together For The Safety Of Gay Students, David S. Doty Jan 2001

Finding A Third Way: The Use Of Public Engagement And Adr To Bring School Communities Together For The Safety Of Gay Students, David S. Doty

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

On its face, the suggestion that gay and lesbian students, along with all other students, should be protected from violence and harm in public schools does not seem to warrant controversy. Yet, disputes over this issue threaten to consume school communities, as school officials wrestle with complicated legal requirements and emotional stakeholders. Contributing to the turmoil is the fact that school officials cannot begin to address the safety concerns of gay students strictly within a legal framework without finding themselves frustrated by a number of conflicting mandates. On the one hand, schools are obligated under Title IX and the Equal …

Boys Will Be Boys: Peer Sexual Harassment In Schools And The Implications Of Davis V. Monroe County Board Of Education, Tianna Mcclure Jan 2001

Boys Will Be Boys: Peer Sexual Harassment In Schools And The Implications Of Davis V. Monroe County Board Of Education, Tianna Mcclure

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The recent Supreme Court decision finding that the failure of schools to address and remedy peer sexual harassment in Davis v. Monroe County Board of Education, appears to be a victory for students and feminists alike. However, the Davis decision does not go far enough to insure the emotional and physical well-being of America's school children. While as a result of this decision schools must begin to recognize the true nature and severity of peer sexual harassment or face the possibility of monetary damages, Davis is, nevertheless, flawed. The Supreme Court operates under the assumption that actual knowledge is the …

Peer Sexual Harassment In California After Davis, John F. Walsh

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This article discusses, from a practice standpoint, the significance Davis v. Monroe County Board of Education will have for California schools and colleges. The article first discusses Ninth Circuit interpretations of peer harassment prior to Davis, then analyzes Davis from a practice standpoint, raising issues left open by the Davis decision. The article then discusses the interrelationship between Title IX and California law. Finally, the article addresses institutional and personal liability and immunity defense issues.

Euro-Med: European Ambitions In The Mediterranean, Sheila Carapico Jan 2001

Euro-Med: European Ambitions In The Mediterranean, Sheila Carapico

Political Science Faculty Publications

The European Union is carving out a sphere of potentially vast influence in the Euro-Mediterranean basin, while also cultivating special relationship further south in the Arabian Peninsula. European ambitions do not directly challenge US security policy in the Middle East. Rather, they parallel US interests in the Caribbean Basin and Latin America: for a large regional free trade zone open to imports and foreign investment.

Through The Looking Glass Of Teaching: The Death Penalty And The Political Culture Of Detached Passions, Adelaide H. Villmoare Jan 2001

Through The Looking Glass Of Teaching: The Death Penalty And The Political Culture Of Detached Passions, Adelaide H. Villmoare

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Today, despite daily struggles in courtrooms against capital punishment, there appears little legal room to challenge the death penalty. Most constitutional questions appear "settled. Given the present composition of the Supreme Court, there is scant expectation of any major reversals. Also, the Court's future is to be decided by a President who was governor of a state that has executed more people since 1976 than any other state in the nation. While abolitionist scholars and activists continue to raise constitutional issues, the most dramatic events challenging the death penalty have occurred in the larger political arena outside the courtroom. The …

Quantum Chemistry & Methyl Transfer, Iii, Robert Sidney Cox Jan 2001

Quantum Chemistry & Methyl Transfer, Iii, Robert Sidney Cox

Theses & ETDs

Quantum chemistry is the application of the methods of quantum physics to chemical systems. In particular, the electronic state of a molecule must be described by quantum mechanics for any hope of accuracy. The difficulties inherent in such a description necessitate elaborate approximation schemes. The amount of calculation required to employ such approximation schemes requires the use of digital computers, and a balance between accuracy and computational speed must be maintained. In Part I, a review of the areas of quantum mechanics necessary to understand these approximation schemes is presented. The simplest approximation scheme used today, the Hartree-Fock Self-Consistent Field …

Federal Regulation Of Isolated Wetlands After Swancc, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2001

Federal Regulation Of Isolated Wetlands After Swancc, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

This past January the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Clean Water Act (CWA) did not authorize the federal government to prohibit a landfill operator from filling isolated ponds on its property merely because the ponds were used as habitat by migratory birds. The National Association of Home Builders claimed that the decision in Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County v. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (SWANCC) was "a major legal victory for home builders and other private property owners." Critics of the SWANCC decision argued that it jeopardizes "perhaps a fifth of the water bodies in the United …

Fabrication Of Nanometer-Sized Protein Patterns Using Atomic Force Microscopy And Selective Immobilization, Kapila Wadu-Mesthrige, Nabil A. Amro, Jayne C. Garno, Song Xu, Gang Yu Liu Jan 2001

Fabrication Of Nanometer-Sized Protein Patterns Using Atomic Force Microscopy And Selective Immobilization, Kapila Wadu-Mesthrige, Nabil A. Amro, Jayne C. Garno, Song Xu, Gang Yu Liu

Faculty Publications

A new methodology is introduced to produce nanometer-sized protein patterns. The approach includes two main steps, nanopatterning of self-assembled monolayers using atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based nanolithography and subsequent selective immobilization of proteins on the patterned monolayers. The resulting templates and protein patterns are characterized in situ using AFM. Compared with conventional protein fabrication methods, this approach is able to produce smaller patterns with higher spatial precision. In addition, fabrication and characterization are completed in near physiological conditions. The adsorption configuration and bioreactivity of the proteins within the nanopatterns are also studied in situ.

Faculty Publications

In this report, placement of Rickettsia felis in the spotted fever group (SFG) rather than the typhus group (TG) of Rickettsia is proposed. The organism, which was first observed in cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) by electron microscopy, has not yet been reported to have been cultivated reproducibly, thereby limiting the standard rickettsial typing by serological means. To overcome this challenge, several genes were selected as targets to be utilized for the classification of R. felis. DNA from cat fleas naturally infected with R. felis was amplified by PCR utilizing primer sets specific for the 190 kDa surface antigen (rOmpA) and …

Identity Crisis: "Intersectionality," "Multidimensionality," And The Development Of An Adequate Theory Of Subordination, Darren Lenard Hutchinson Jan 2001

Identity Crisis: "Intersectionality," "Multidimensionality," And The Development Of An Adequate Theory Of Subordination, Darren Lenard Hutchinson

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Article arises out of the intersectionality and post-intersectionality literature and makes a case against the essentialist considerations that informed the Human Rights Campaign's endorsement of United States Senator Alfonse D'Amato. Part I discusses the pitfalls that occur when scholars and activists engage in essentialist politics and treat identities and forms of subordination as conflicting forces. Part II examines how essentialism negatively affects legal theory in the equality context. Part III considers the historical motivation for and the efficacy of the "intersectionality" response to the problem of essentialism. Part III also extensively analyzes the "multidimensional" critiques of essentialism offered by …

"Suitable Targets"? Parallels And Connections Between "Hate" Crimes And "Driving While Black", Lu-In Wang Jan 2001

"Suitable Targets"? Parallels And Connections Between "Hate" Crimes And "Driving While Black", Lu-In Wang

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Essay seeks to show that there is less to some of these apparent differences than meets the eye. While hate crimes may tend to be less routine and more violent than discriminatory traffic stops, closer examination of each shows the need to complicate our understanding of both. The work of social scientists who have studied bias-motivated violence and of legal scholars who have studied racial profiling- prominent among them my fellow panelist, Professor David A. Harris- reveals striking similarities and connections between the two practices. In particular, both hate crimes and racial profiling tend to be condemned only at …
