The Regulation Of Manganese Superoxide Dismutase And Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase By Nuclear Factor-Kappa B And Activator Protein 1 In Rat Aortic Endothelial Cells, Scott L. Cobbs Jan 2001

The Regulation Of Manganese Superoxide Dismutase And Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase By Nuclear Factor-Kappa B And Activator Protein 1 In Rat Aortic Endothelial Cells, Scott L. Cobbs

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) are two enzymes that influence reactive oxygen species within the cell. The promoter regions for the genes encoding these enzymes have two specific transcription factor elements in common, activator protein 1 (AP-1) and nuclear factor kappa b (NF-KB). This study was initiated to determine if either NF-KB or AP-1 regulates the transcription of both genes in endothelial cells. To test whether NF-KB or AP-1 binding sites in the MnSOD and iNOS promoter region were important for transcriptional regulation, we performed induction analysis using various deletion constructs of MnSOD and iNOS …

Prevention Of Trafficking And The Care And Support Of Trafficked Persons In The Context Of An Emerging Hiv/Aids Epidemic In Nepal, Celine Daly

HIV and AIDS

This study is a collaborative effort between the Asia Foundation (Kathmandu) and the Horizons project of the Population Council (New Delhi) to document the current intervention models and community-based study of human trafficking in the context of an emerging HIV/AIDS epidemic in Nepal. To address the human rights component of trafficking, the three components of this study focus on the rights and needs of trafficked persons as well as those who are vulnerable to trafficking. An analysis and assessment of the effectiveness of laws, policies, and interventions in the apprehension, prosecution, and conviction of alleged traffickers is not included in …

Interventions To Reduce Hiv/Aids Stigma: What Have We Learned?, Lisanne Brown, Lea Trujillo, Kate Macintyre

HIV and AIDS

Stigma is a common human reaction to disease. Throughout history many diseases have carried considerable stigma, including leprosy, tuberculosis, cancer, mental illness, and many sexually transmitted diseases. HIV/AIDS is only the latest disease to be stigmatized. This paper reviews 21 interventions that have explicitly attempted to decrease AIDS stigma both in the developed and developing countries and 9 studies that aim to decrease stigma related with other diseases. The studies selected met stringent evaluation criteria in order to draw common lessons for future development of interventions to combat stigma. This paper assesses published and reported studies through comparison of audiences, …

HIV and AIDS

Although many program planners see schools as a convenient location for HIV-prevention programs, there is controversy about whether school programs can ever be strong enough to go beyond improving knowledge and attitudes to increasing the adoption of safe sexual behaviors. Evaluations of school programs in Mexico, South Africa, and Thailand focus on this question: Can school HIV programs change behavior? In each country, local organizations have worked with educators on teacher training and course design to ensure high-quality school interventions. Researchers surveyed students’ knowledge, attitudes, norms, and reported behavior before the intervention, immediately after the intervention, and again several months …

As many participants know, the annual Computers & Writing Conference provides good ideas for our classrooms and research. At the 2000 conference in Florida, a group of us sat in a hallway excited about a film we had just watched, the documentary Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control. It seemed to us that consideration of cutting-edge film could become more than a single screening, an after-hours diversion during the conference. We agreed that many recent films incorporated elements of hypermedia in their sensibilities, even composition. An obvious example was the 2000 feature film Time Code, confronting the viewer …

Law As A Tool For A Sexual Revolution: Israel's Prevention Of Sexual Harassment Law- 1998, Tzili Mor

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Discussion of the newly enacted law will outline the theoretical underpinnings and their effect on the resultant version (Part III), followed by the legislative history, including the Knesset and the public debate surrounding the bill (Part IV), and the impact of that debate on the final outcome of the law (Part V). Part VI will pay particular attention to the innovative approach of the law as a whole and some of the revolutionary specific provisions within. In particular, the legislative framework will be considered in the context of a nation founded and conducted on traditional religious tenets of Judaism. Finally, …

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

In this special symposium issue, the Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business tackles what promises to be one of the most interesting and challenging legal fields of the 2 1st century: the regulation of derivatives and other complex financial products. Interestingly, this field experienced phenomenal growth and profound change during recent decades, yet is virtually guaranteed to assume even greater importance in the coming century and, accordingly, to present even greater challenges for investors, market professionals, and regulators.
