Lgbt Studies: Past, Presences And Futures, Richard M. Juang
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
When I rolled out of bed at 4 am on April 20 to make the trip to New York for "Futures of the Field: Building LGBT Studies into the 21st Century University," the idea of discussing institutionalization was less than appealing. In a time of staff cutbacks, increasing courseloads and notoriously poor job markets, going back to sleep seemed a much better idea.

Consumer Perceptions Of Three Food Safety Interventions Related To Meat Processing, Christiane Schroeter, Karen P. Penner, John A. Fox
Consumer Perceptions Of Three Food Safety Interventions Related To Meat Processing, Christiane Schroeter, Karen P. Penner, John A. Fox
Agribusiness
A focus group study with 37 residents of Manhattan, Kansas, was conducted to examine consumers' risk perceptions of foodborne illnesses from eating beef. The four focus-group sessions were designed to determine (1) relative preferences for alternative combinations of public food safety measures (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points [HACCP], carcass pasteurization, irradiation) and private protection (home preparation of rare, medium, and well-done hamburgers); (2) how who is at risk (children vs. adults) influences preferences; (3) whether consumers would pay a premium for increased product safety arising from the adoption of three different innovations in processing plants; and (4) how to improve …

The Web Magazine 2001, Summer, Matt Webber
The Web Magazine
The Web Magazine focuses on alumni news and campus events from Gardner-Webb College; now Gardner-Webb University. Gardner-Webb University celebrates its recent recognition in the Portfolio of Excellence as an "exemplary" institution. GWU also has a first for two graduation ceremonies in May due to the number of students. Many students were recognized in this issue such as Donnie Thurman Jr. following in his father's footsteps and other graduating students ending their career with recognitions. Another big change is coming to GWU such as the push to diversify the faculty. A few different programs are recognized along with a mom defining …

Telecommunications Reform In Botswana: A Policy Model For African States, Patricia K. Mccormick
Telecommunications Reform In Botswana: A Policy Model For African States, Patricia K. Mccormick
Communication Faculty Research Publications
Since the mid-1990s, Botswana has pursued a policy of telecommunications liberalisation. This article, based on fieldwork conducted in Botswana in the summer of 2000, analyzes several notable aspects of the process of reform and denotes those worthy of emulation by other African states. The participation and protection of domestic telecommunication users, transparency in decision-making, the creation of an independent regulatory agency, and the introduction of competition in the form of private cellular service providers are among those policy features that are recommended for replication. Various facets of the tendering process and subsequent licences granted to the mobile operators as well …

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications
Magnetic properties of Co-C nanodot arrays produced by direct interferometric laser annealing are investigated by magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and magnetization measurements. The dots are formed by locally annealing sputtered amorphous Co-C films in regions where the laser intensity is highest. As-sputtered Co-C films do not exhibit ferromagnetic order at room temperature, but MFM shows that the dots become magnetic upon annealing, possibly due to the agglomeration or phase separation of Co-rich clusters. The dots are embedded in either a paramagnetic or weakly magnetic matrix. The magnetic properties of the generated pattern can be changed by varying the laser power. …

Review Of The Risk Screening Assessment For The Mixed Waste Landfill, Swmu76, Citizen Action (Through New Mexico Community Foundation), Marvin Resnikoff, Ph.D.
Citizen Action (through New Mexico Community Foundation)
Citizen Action commissioned Dr. Marvin Resnikoff, Radioactive Waste Management Associates, New York, to review Sandia National Laboratories’ risk assessment for the Mixed Waste Landfill and evaluate whether the objectives identified under the Phase 2 RCRA Facility Investigation to “determine thoroughly the contaminant source, define the nature and extent of contamination, identify potential contaminant transport pathways, evaluate potential risks posed by the levels of contamination identified, and recommend remedial action, if warranted, for the landfill” were satisfied. A copy of Dr. Resnikoff’s curriculum vitae is included with this report.
This research was completed money allocated during Round 2 of the Citizens’ …

Flowering Plants: Pokeweeds, Four-O’Clocks, Carpetweeds, Cacti, Purslanes, Goosefoots, Pigweeds, And Pinks, Robert H. Mohlenbrock
Illustrated Flora of Illinois
Robert H. Mohlenbrock provides a definitive account of the pokeweed, four-o'clock, carpetweed, cactus, purslane, goosefoot, pigweed, and pink families in Illinois.
Flowering Plants: Pokeweeds, Four-o’clocks, Carpetweeds, Cacti, Purslanes, Goosefoots, Pigweeds, and Pinks is the fifteenth volume of the Illustrated Flora of Illinois series and the ninth devoted to dicots, or plants that have two seed-leaves, or cotyledons, upon germination. Each of the 141 plants is beautifully illustrated by Paul W. Nelson.
Nelson shows the full habitat of the plant and close-ups of various vegetative and reproductive structures that are crucial for the identification of individual species. Each illustration includes detailed …
