Expression Of Gus Gene In Tobacco (Nicotiana Tabacum) And Corn (Zea Mays) Using Dimboa-Resistant Agrobacterium Strains, Deepti Mohamalawari Dec 2001

Expression Of Gus Gene In Tobacco (Nicotiana Tabacum) And Corn (Zea Mays) Using Dimboa-Resistant Agrobacterium Strains, Deepti Mohamalawari

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis evaluates the ability of Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains resistant to the compound DIMBOA [2, 4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-2h-l,4- benzoxazin-3(4H)-one] to infect corn. DIMBOA is a secondary plant metabolite and is believed to have antimicrobial properties and provides resistance to the plant against microbial infection. Agrobacteriummediated genetic transformation technique can be employed to genetically alter most dicotyledonous plant species. However, such transformation has been limited in monocotyledonous plants, especially corn. One of the factors responsible for this recalcitrance is the presence of DIMBOA in corn shoots. In this study, we proposed the use of DIMBOA- resistant strains of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, bearing binary plasmids …

Isolation And Characterization Of A Novel As(V)-Reducing Bacterium: Implications For Arsenic Mobilization And The Genus Desulfitobacterium, Allison Niggemyer, Stefan Spring, Erko Stackebrandt, Frank Rosenzweig Dec 2001

Isolation And Characterization Of A Novel As(V)-Reducing Bacterium: Implications For Arsenic Mobilization And The Genus Desulfitobacterium, Allison Niggemyer, Stefan Spring, Erko Stackebrandt, Frank Rosenzweig

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Dissimilatory arsenate-reducing bacteria have been implicated in the mobilization of arsenic from arsenic-enriched sediments. An As(V)-reducing bacterium, designated strain GBFH, was isolated from arsenic-contaminated sediments of Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Strain GBFH couples the oxidation of formate to the reduction of As(V) when formate is supplied as the sole carbon source and electron donor. Additionally, strain GBFH is capable of reducing As(V), Fe(III), Se(VI), Mn(IV) and a variety of oxidized sulfur species. 16S ribosomal DNA sequence comparisons reveal that strain GBFH is closely related to Desulfitobacterium hafniense DCB-2T and Desulfitobacterium frappieri PCP-1T. Comparative physiology demonstrates that D …

Global Focus On Landmines In Afghanistan, Joe Lokey

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Even though it has one of the longest running mine clearance programs, Afghanistan is still believed to be one of the most severely mine-affected countries in the world. The Mine Action Program in Afghanistan (MAPA), a United Nations-supported entity, is one of the largest and most successful national programs in the world and one almost exclusively run by the Afghans themselves with fewer than a dozen or so of the 5,000-person workforce being non-nationals.

Annualized Returns Of Venture-Backed Public Companies Categorized By Stage Of Financing: An Empirical Investigation Of Ipos In The Last Three Decades, Yochanan Shachmurove Dec 2001

Annualized Returns Of Venture-Backed Public Companies Categorized By Stage Of Financing: An Empirical Investigation Of Ipos In The Last Three Decades, Yochanan Shachmurove

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Although the national media has given increased attention to the venture capital process, misconceptions continue to proliferate. One often hears about the incredible capital gains of IPO share prices. This paper refutes the myth that investors demand very high rates of return to compensate for the risks involved in financing ventures. The paper investigates actual performance of 3,063 Initial Public Offerings of companies that were backed by venture capital from 1968 until 1998 stratified by current actively and inactively traded companies and by stages of financing. The main findings are that annualized returns are different for current actively and inactively …

Lort And Young Rivers Catchment : Catchment Appraisal 2001, Jamie Bowyer, Esperance Catchment Support Team (Wa)

Resource management technical reports

Using the Rapid Catchment Appraisal process, this report summarises current information for the Lort and Young Rivers Catchment, 75 kilometres west of Esperance in Western Australia. The Rapid Catchment Appraisal (RCA) process is one of the processes included in the strategy to tackle salinity and its management in Western Australia. The RCA process provides a 'snap shot' of information on the risk and impact to agricultural production and natural resources within regional geographic catchments.

The Influence Of Peat And Inorganic Amendments On Physical Properties Of Sand-Based Rootzones, Freddie C. Waltz Jr. Dec 2001

The Influence Of Peat And Inorganic Amendments On Physical Properties Of Sand-Based Rootzones, Freddie C. Waltz Jr.

All Dissertations

Many golf course putting greens and athletic fields are constructed with a medium consisting of a high sand content. Peat is the most common amendment to rootzone sand (RZS). However, a trend to replace peat with inorganic soil amendments (IOSA), such as calcined clay (CC) and diatomaceous earth (DE), is occurring. Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate physical and hydraulic properties of rootzone mixtures and a field study investigated the potential of IOSA as a replacement to peat. In laboratory evaluations, amended RZS reduced the bulk density of all mixtures, while saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) for the RZS and mixtures …

Engaging Communication In Conflict : Systemic Practice By Stephen W Littlejohn And Kathy Domenici, Sage Publications, 2000., Ganesh T Jejurikar

IIMB Management Review

The book is well structured and flows smoothly from Part I to Part IV spread over eight chapters. It contains theory, conceptualisation, metaphors, methodology and live examples without jargon and motherhood statements. The beauty of the book is in its simplicity and brevity. The authors opine that “conflicts can be made and abandoned, occupied for a time and reshaped, renewed, refurbished andrebuilt.” Though the authors comment in the preface that, “Human beings have trouble managing the very difference that makes them human,” the book is full of optimism and conveys confidence and trust in the inherent strength of human beings …

Learning From Linux, Sourav Mukherji

IIMB Management Review

Conventional wisdom on knowledge management deems organisations as essential vehicles for collaborative knowledge creation but here the entire process of knowledge creation takes place outside the boundary of any formal hierarchical organisation, creating a paradox for knowledge management. An attempt is made here to analyse the Linux development process to help resolve this paradox, and in the process, provide some insights Award Winning Student Essay Learning from Linux for organisational knowledge management.

Social, Religious, And Personal Contributors To Prejudice, Robert Lundblad Dec 2001

Social, Religious, And Personal Contributors To Prejudice, Robert Lundblad

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Prejudicial beliefs and behaviors have been viewed from numerous perspectives. Four factors, religious attitudes, pride of in-group membership, traditional beliefs, and certain personality types, have individually been shown to be associated with prejudice. Some researchers have looked at a few of these factors together, but none have looked at all four together to examine potential relationships and their individual contribution to prejudicial thinking. This research is designed to investigate attitudes toward out-groups, sources of prejudice, and religious outlook. Four measures of religious attitudes, the Quest scale of the Religious Life Inventory (RLI), the Intrinsic and Extrinsic scales from the Religious …
