Household Words, Lisa Knopp Oct 2001

Household Words, Lisa Knopp

English Faculty Publications

The Germanic words for home may have been derived from two Indo-European words: kei, which means lying or settling down, a bed or couch, as well as something beloved, and ksêmas, which means safe dwelling. These linguistic ancestors also yield the Greek koiman, to put to sleep, which is the root of koimeterion, a sleeping place or cemetery. In time, the word for home in several European languages (ham in Anglo-Saxon; heimr in Old Norse; háims in Gothic; kemas or kaímas in Lithuanian; caymis in Old Prussian, etc.) also came to mean a village, town, or collection of dwellings. Manufacturing Locations In Ohio: Shifts In Employment And Average Earnings Among Central, Suburban And Rural Counties, Robert Sadowski

Over the past two decades, there is some evidence suggesting that manufacturing jobs have moved away from central counties and into suburban and rural counties.1 In addition, there is an assumption that many of these jobs now pay lower average earnings th

The Invisible Can Or, Gendering Corporate Globalization Trouble: Technological Utopianism And The Language Of Erasure, Marleen S. Barr Oct 2001

The Invisible Can Or, Gendering Corporate Globalization Trouble: Technological Utopianism And The Language Of Erasure, Marleen S. Barr

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

I turn to Judith Butler to clarify my term corporate globalization trouble as well as to explain why this trouble should be situated in gendered terms regarding power, visibility, and subjectivity inequities. [1] Butler describes deviant gender identities failing to coincide with the matrix of intelligibility: precisely because certain kinds of 'gender identities' fail to conform to those norms of cultural intelligibility, they appear only as developmental failures or logical impossibilities from within that domain. Their persistence and proliferation, however, provide critical opportunities to expose the limits and regulatory aims of that domain of intelligibility and, …

A Very Low Bit-Rate Speech Recognition System, Matthew Baecher Oct 2001

A Very Low Bit-Rate Speech Recognition System, Matthew Baecher

Theses

When using extracted speech feature coefficients for speech synthesis, quantization is considered a lossy compression scheme. The data being compressed cannot be recovered or reconstructed exactly. However, in a speech recognition system for command and control purposes, a certain amount of quantization can be allowed, with comparable results. In some cases, quantization even serves to "close the gaps" between the coefficients of the incoming speech signal and those of the templates. Since the coefficients are not being used to reconstruct the signal, a very coarse quantization can be used, enabling a very low bit-rate transmission with very good recognition results. …

African American Single Full-Time Fathers: How Are They Doing?, Roberta L. Coles

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Using a symbolic interactionist approach, interviews of 10 Black single full-time fathers indicate that these fathers perceive parenting to have had positive results for themselves. Specifically, the employment and income of most of the men had remained stable or improved. While their dating lives had suffered the most, they had sustained social activities with friends and families at a high level. Moreover, their assessments of their parent-child relationships and their own life satisfaction was positive.

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame And Museum: The Construction Of Memories And The Sanitation Of Threats, Stewart Varner Oct 2001

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame And Museum: The Construction Of Memories And The Sanitation Of Threats, Stewart Varner

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

After numerous visits to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, I have found that the best place to start a tour is with the two films on the ground floor. Both films serve to set up narratives that run throughout the rest of the exhibits. The first film, Mystery Train, tells a traditional history of rock music's development beginning with the merging of blues, gospel and country music in large, urban centers like Chicago and encourages visitors to think of rock in terms of its continuing development through self-referencing. Kick Out the …
