Privacy-Preserving Cooperative Statistical Analysis, Wenliang Du, Mikhail J. Atallah Jan 2001

Privacy-Preserving Cooperative Statistical Analysis, Wenliang Du, Mikhail J. Atallah

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The growth of the Internet opens up tremendous opportunities for cooperative computation, where the answer depends on the private inputs of separate entities. Sometimes these computations may occur between mutually untrusted entities. The problem is trivial if the context allows the conduct of these computations by a trusted entity that would know the inputs from all the participants; however if the context disallows this then the techniques of secure multi-party computation become very relevant and can provide useful solutions. Statistic analysis is a widely used computation in real life, but the known methods usually require one to know the whole …

10 New Γ Doradus And Δ Scuti Stars, Gregory W. Henry, Francis C. Fekel, Anthony B. Kaye, Ann Kaul

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present high-resolution spectroscopy and precision photometry of five new γ Doradus and five new δ Scuti variables. The five new γ Doradus variables substantially increase the number of confirmed stars of this class. All 10 stars fall in the spectral class range F0–F2, but they are cleanly separated into two groups by their luminosity and photometric periods. However, the period gap between the γ Doradus and δ Scuti stars is becoming very narrow since we confirm that HD 155154 is a γ Doradus star with the shortest periods reported to date (the shortest of its four periods is ∼0.312 …

An Experimental Assessment Of Business Students' Performance: Recognizing Risk Factors Associated With Misappropriation Of Assets, Kathryn A.S. Lancaster, Carolyn A. Strand Jan 2001

An Experimental Assessment Of Business Students' Performance: Recognizing Risk Factors Associated With Misappropriation Of Assets, Kathryn A.S. Lancaster, Carolyn A. Strand

Accounting

This paper reports the results of a study that was conducted to investigate the performance of senior-level business students as it pertains to recognizing certain clues or risk factors that are frequently associated with the misappropriation of entity assets. Based on three of the risk factors identified in SAS No. 82, an experiment was used to examine differences in performance based on academic major, fraud-specific knowledge, and certain experiences of the students. The primary contributions of this study are the discovery that: (1) an increasing number of risk factors; (2) knowledge accumulated in an accounting curriculum; (3) reading additional articles …

Modeling An Algebraic Stepper, John Clements, Mathew Flatt, Matthias Felleisen Jan 2001

Modeling An Algebraic Stepper, John Clements, Mathew Flatt, Matthias Felleisen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Programmers rely on the correctness of the tools in their programming environments. In the past, semanticists have studied the correctness of compilers and compiler analyses, which are the most important tools. In this paper, we make the case that other tools, such as debuggers and steppers, deserve semantic models, too, and that using these models can help in developing these tools. Our concrete starting point is the algebraic stepper in DrScheme, our Scheme programming environment. The algebraic stepper explains a Scheme computation in terms of an algebraic rewriting of the program text. A program is rewritten until it is in …

Recognizing The Relevance Of Is Research And Broadening The Appeal And Applicability Of Future Publications, Steven Alter Jan 2001

Recognizing The Relevance Of Is Research And Broadening The Appeal And Applicability Of Future Publications, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Highly applicable research is done not only by some IS faculty members, but also by software firms, consulting firms, and other organizations whose products and services depend on IS research they perform. The applicability of IS research done by academics is evident in the concepts and explanations in many textbooks. There should be little surprise, however, that practitioners who expect readability and direct applicability have little patience for IS publications shaped by the concerns and expectations of academia. It might be possible to broaden the acceptance and relevance of IS research publications by distributing them in both a short version …
