Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Few studies have been conducted in sub-Saharan Africa where multiple recordings of heart girth and body weight were made for the same cattle population. In this study, monthly measurements were taken of working oxen on 24 smallholder farms in the Ethiopian highlands for 1 year. The overall yearly mean body weight of oxen across working and nonworking periods was 281 ± 37 kg. No significant differences in mean monthly body weights were observed, except for December and January compared to August (297 ± 36 and 296 ± 37, and 271 ± 35 kg, respectively, P2values for the monthly equations ranged …

No-Nonsense Guide To Csab/Csac Accreditation, Pete Sanderson Jan 2001

No-Nonsense Guide To Csab/Csac Accreditation, Pete Sanderson

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

CSAB/CSAC provides professional accreditation of computer science bachelor's degree programs in the United States. As of October 2000, 159 institutions held this accreditation. By our count, over 80% of the accredited programs were offered by departments which also offer graduate programs in computer science. This means that few small colleges are represented. Our intent in this work is to give the small college audience an up-to-date guide to the recently-revised CSAB/CSAC accreditation standards. The guide is not comprehensive; we emphasize those issues we believe to be of greatest interest to small colleges and address them from the perspective we have …

Validation Of Three Back-Calculation Models By Using Multiple Oxytetracycline Marks Formed In The Otoliths And Scales Of Bluegill × Green Sunfish Hybrids, Robert A. Klumb, Michael A. Bozek, Richard V. Frie Jan 2001

Validation Of Three Back-Calculation Models By Using Multiple Oxytetracycline Marks Formed In The Otoliths And Scales Of Bluegill × Green Sunfish Hybrids, Robert A. Klumb, Michael A. Bozek, Richard V. Frie

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

We assessed the accuracy of the Fraser–Lee, biological-intercept, and Weisberg back-calculation models to estimate growth from otoliths and scales of laboratory-reared juvenile bluegill × green sunfish hybrids (Lepomis macrochirus × Lepomis cyanellus). Hybrid sunfish were injected three times with oxytetracycline hydrochloride at 90- day intervals to mark bony structures, creating simulated annuli for model validation. Back-calculated lengths (BCLs) with otoliths were generally less accurate than scales for all three models. Errors ranged from –8.2 to 7.8% for the Fraser–Lee model, from –8.0 to 8.3% for the biological-intercept model, and from –6.5 to 14.3% for the Weisberg model. For …

Adaptive Harvest Management: 2001 Duck Hunting Season

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The process of setting waterfowl hunting regulations is conducted annually in the United States. This process involves a number of meetings where the status of waterfowl is reviewed by the agencies responsible for setting hunting regulations. In addition, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) publishes proposed regulations in the Federal Register to allow public comment. This document is part of a series of reports intended to support development of harvest regulations for the 2001 hunting season. Specifically, this report is intended to provide waterfowl managers and the public with information about the use of adaptive harvest management (AHM) for …

American Woodcock Population Status, 2001, James R. Kelley Jr. Jan 2001

American Woodcock Population Status, 2001, James R. Kelley Jr.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Singing-ground and Wing-collection surveys were conducted to assess the population status of the American woodcock (Scolopax minor). Singing-ground Survey data indicated that the number of displaying woodcock in the Eastern Region was unchanged (P>0.1) from 2000 levels, although the point estimate of the trend was negative. In the Central Region, there was a 12.9% decrease in the number of woodcock heard displaying (P<0.01) compared to 2000 levels. Trends from the Singing-ground Survey during 1991-01 were negative (-2.6 and –2.5% per year for the Eastern and Central regions, respectively; P<0.01). There were long-term (1968-01) declines (P<0.01) of 2.5% per year in the Eastern Region and 1.6% per year in the Central Region. The 2000 recruitment index for the Eastern Region (1.4 immatures per adult female) was 27% higher than the 1999 index, but was 18% below the long-term regional average. The 2000 recruitment index for the Central Region (1.2 immatures per adult female) was unchanged from the 1999 index, but was 29% below the long-term regional average. The index of daily hunting success in the Eastern Region decreased from 2.1 woodcock per successful hunt in 1999 to 2.0 woodcock per successful hunt in 2000, and seasonal hunting success decreased 10%, from 9.3 to 8.4 woodcock per successful hunter in 1999 and 2000, respectively. In the Central Region, the daily success index decreased 5% from 2.1 woodcock per successful hunt in 1999 to 2.0 in 2000; and seasonal hunting success decreased 2% from 10.6 to 10.4 woodcock per successful hunter.

The Prospect For Answer Sets Computation By A Genetic Model, A. Bertoni, G. Grossi, A. Provetti, Vladik Kreinovich, L. Tari Jan 2001

The Prospect For Answer Sets Computation By A Genetic Model, A. Bertoni, G. Grossi, A. Provetti, Vladik Kreinovich, L. Tari

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We combine recent results from both Logic Programming and Genetic Algorithms to design a new method for the efficent computation of Answer Sets of logic programs. First of all the problem is reduced to the problem of finding a suitable coloring on directed graphs. Then the problem of finding a suitable coloring is relaxed to a combinatorial optimization problem and solved (in an approximate way) by a continuous discrete time system derived by a genetic model.

An Open Field, Char Miller Jan 2001

An Open Field, Char Miller

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

It should have been during a similarly punishing and mercurial moment in late twentieth-century San Antonio, enveloped in a "furious storm of rain, of hail, or of snow," that I initially encountered Richard White's seminal historiographical essay. Such a convergence of art, life, and weather pattern might have defied reality, but it would have made for a fabulous narrative opening. That said, like the norther's rush, his article, which I read shortly after its publication in the August 1985 issue of the Pacific Historical Review, blew me away.

Technocratic Teamwork: Mitigating Polarization And Cultural Marginalization In An Engineering Firm, Jerry K. Daday, Beverly B. Burris Jan 2001

Technocratic Teamwork: Mitigating Polarization And Cultural Marginalization In An Engineering Firm, Jerry K. Daday, Beverly B. Burris

Sociology Faculty Publications

Many corporations attempt to establish a unified corporate culture as a way of orienting employees toward corporate goals and objectives. However, a technocratic organizational structure has been found to exist in many high-tech corporations, which divides employees into an expert and non-expert sector based on differences in credentials and technical expertise. Because of this division, employees working within these two sectors experience differences in corporate rewards, worker autonomy, and creative freedoms. These factors have been found to lead to a polarized, divided, and discontented workforce. To understand how a technocratic structure influences and affects a dominant corporate culture and organizational …

Performance Of Older People At Different Levels Of Task Complexity, Deepanwita Mohanty

Theses Digitization Project

Technological innovations and career changes have made the workers need for training/retraining an important issue in organizations. However, due to presumed age differences in the ability to benefit from training, employers are sometimes concerned about spending money on training for older workers. This study investigated the relationship of age with attitude about computer training (self-efficacy and anxiety) and training performance at different levels of task complexity.

Is Concept Mapping An Effective Tool For Evaluation Of Student Learning In Science?, Linda Jean Foster Jan 2001

Is Concept Mapping An Effective Tool For Evaluation Of Student Learning In Science?, Linda Jean Foster

Theses Digitization Project

Concept mapping is a metacognitive learning strategy which often improves a learner's ability to construct new knowledge. This action research project was intended to determine the level of effectiveness of concept mapping as a student learning intervention. Students in two high school science classes constructed concept maps before and after instruction during a unit of study about volcanoes. The maps were analyzed for increases in complexity and indications of learning. The concept maps were then compared for differences by groups based on volcano unit test scores. Based on the analysis of the matched pairs of concept maps, those maps which …
