Affinity For Scalar Fields To Dissipate, Arjun Berera, Rudnei O. Ramos Apr 2001

Affinity For Scalar Fields To Dissipate, Arjun Berera, Rudnei O. Ramos

Dartmouth Scholarship

The zero-temperature effective equation of motion is derived for a scalar field interacting with other fields. For a broad range of cases, involving interaction with as few as one or two fields, dissipative regimes are found for the scalar field system. The zero-temperature limit constitutes a baseline effect that will be prevalent in any general statistical state. Thus, the results found here provide strong evidence that dissipation is the norm not the exception for an interacting scalar field system. For application to inflationary cosmology, this provides convincing evidence that warm inflation could be a natural dynamics once proper treatment of …

Conversion Of Virulent Cryphonectria Parasitica From The Lula Lake Land Trust To Hypovirulent Strains, Pearl Hwang Apr 2001

Conversion Of Virulent Cryphonectria Parasitica From The Lula Lake Land Trust To Hypovirulent Strains, Pearl Hwang

Honors Theses

For almost a century, the fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica has existed in the United States as a wound parasite to American chestnut (Castanea dentata) trees. However, hypovirulence, evidence of spontaneous healing in Italy and Michigan, has given the American chestnut trees hope to one day be restored into its natural range. Viruses were the cause of such spontaneous healings. My hypothesis was that a viruscontaining hypovirulent strain of C. parasitica (in a brown background) would share alleles that control anastomoses with the local virulent strains, so a virus that causes hypovirulence could be transmitted into local virulent strains in vitro. Fifty …

Mass Density Profiles Of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Apr 2001

Mass Density Profiles Of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

We derive the mass density profiles of dark matter halos that are implied by high spatial resolution rotation curves of low surface brightness galaxies. We find that, at small radii, the mass density distribution is dominated by a nearly constant density core with a core radius of a few kiloparsecs. For ρ(r) ∼ rα, the distribution of inner slopes α is strongly peaked around α = -0.2. This is significantly shallower than the cuspy α ≤ -1 halos found in cold dark matter simulations. While the observed distribution of α does have a tail toward such extreme values, the derived …

A Comparison Of Two Arts Programs Implemented In Two Elementary Schools In Hamilton County, Tennessee, Jayne Denton Apr 2001

A Comparison Of Two Arts Programs Implemented In Two Elementary Schools In Hamilton County, Tennessee, Jayne Denton

Honors Theses

A wide variety of theoretical backgrounds can exist between two different art programs. This paper observes and compares two different art programs that are currently being implemented in two elementary schools of the Hamilton County Department of Education. The theoretical background of the first program, Arts Integration (AI), promotes the teaching art in combination with other subjects. The theoretical background of the second program, Discipline-Based Art Education(DBAE), promotes the teaching of art as its own subject area. First, this paper briefly describes the history of each program, including explanations of the curriculum, program antecedents, and both positive and negative critical analysis. …

Eruptive Stratigraphy And The Transport And Deposition Of Pyroclastic Material From The Caldera-Forming Eruption Of Volcan Ceboruco, Nayarit, Mexico, Brandon Lanquist Browne Apr 2001

Eruptive Stratigraphy And The Transport And Deposition Of Pyroclastic Material From The Caldera-Forming Eruption Of Volcan Ceboruco, Nayarit, Mexico, Brandon Lanquist Browne

Theses (Unassigned)

The ~1000 A.D. eruption of Volcan Ceboruco produced 3--4 km3 of rhyodacitic to dacitic magma erupted as the Jala Pumice, forming a 3.7-km-wide caldera. The tephra sequence consists of alternating Plinian fall and pyroclastic surge deposits, and a series of lithic-rich pyroclastic flow deposits. The latter are known as the Marquesado and North-Flank Pyroclastic Flow deposits. Stratigraphic evidence and results of a comprehensive analysis of accidental lithic and pumice populations constrain the timing of caldera collapse, and the emplacement of the pyroclastic flow deposits to the end of the Jala Pumice. Mass accumulation calculations of particles from fall layers display …

This publication was undertaken by NCES in partnership with two private entities, the The Association for Education Finance and Policy, which contracted for the information collection, and the National Education Association (NEA), which funded the effort. This publication of expert authors' descriptions of each state or province funding system was compiled by education finance researchers from the University of Georgia and the University of Ottawa....The compilers sought to balance the simplicity of the descriptions to make them understandable to a wide audience and, at the same time, technically correct. Some of the terms and concepts might be new to the …

The Implications Of Agriculture In Interior Alaska For Population Dynamics Of Canada Geese, Michael William Eichholz Apr 2001

The Implications Of Agriculture In Interior Alaska For Population Dynamics Of Canada Geese, Michael William Eichholz

Theses (Unassigned)

Understanding how environmental change affects demography is essential for understanding and managing populations. An anthropogenic change in the environment that has affected wildlife populations is widespread agricultural development. Agriculture has both negatively and positively impacted abundance of species by affecting a variety of vital rates that influence population abundance. In this study, I describe the migration ecology of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) that nest and stage in Interior Alaska. I also describe how the introduction of agriculture has potentially positively impacted population dynamics of Canada geese by increasing nutrient acquisition, thereby improving their fecundity and survival. Two subspecies of Canada …

Brine Percolation, Flooding And Snow Ice Formation On Antarctic Sea Ice, Ted Maksym Apr 2001

Brine Percolation, Flooding And Snow Ice Formation On Antarctic Sea Ice, Ted Maksym

Theses (Unassigned)

Modelling studies of brine percolation, flooding, and snow ice formation on Antarctic sea ice were undertaken to (1) determine the influence of brine transport processes on the salinity, porosity, and stable isotopic composition of snow ice and the underlying ice, (2) explain the range of salinities and isotopic composition observed in ice cores, and to provide a better estimate of the contribution of snow ice to the thickness of the winter pack ice, (3) better understand the microstructural controls on brine percolation and its effects on the properties of sea ice, and (4) understand the effects of meteorological forcing on …
