A Greek Cross Dodecaphenylene: Sparteine-Mediated Asymmetric Synthesis Of Chiral D2-Symmetric Π-Conjugated Tetra-O-Phenylenes, Andrzej Rajca, Hua Wang, Pavel Bolshov, Suchada Rajca Apr 2001

A Greek Cross Dodecaphenylene: Sparteine-Mediated Asymmetric Synthesis Of Chiral D2-Symmetric Π-Conjugated Tetra-O-Phenylenes, Andrzej Rajca, Hua Wang, Pavel Bolshov, Suchada Rajca

Andrzej Rajca Publications

The asymmetric synthesis of a chiral, nonracemic π-conjugated system with D2 point group of symmetry, dodecaphenylene 4 is described. In the key step, (−)-sparteine- and Cu(II)-mediated oxidation of 2,2′-dilithio-1,1′-biaryls in ether gives the corresponding dimers, tetra-o-phenylenes, in 80% isolated yields and 50–60% ee’s. X-Ray crystallography confirms the structure of rac-4 and its molecular shape of a Greek cross. The torsional angles between the benzene rings in the tetra-o-phenylene core of rac-4 are in the 56.5–71.0° range. However, CD and UV spectra of 4 in CH2Cl2 are consistent with significant conjugation between the …

Formation Of Rydberg Atoms In An Expanding Ultracold Neutral Plasma, Scott D. Bergeson, T. C. Killian, M. J. Lim, S. Kulin, R. Dumke, S. L. Rolston

Faculty Publications

We study the formation of Rydberg atoms in expanding plasmas at temperatures of 1–1000 K and densities from 10^5–10^10 cm^-3. Up to 20% of the initially free charges recombine in about 100 us, and the binding energy of the Rydberg atoms approximately equals the increase in the kinetic energy of the remaining free electrons. Three-body recombination is expected to dominate in this regime, yet most of our results are inconsistent with this mechanism.

What Determines The Emission Peak Energy Of The Blue Luminescence In Highly Mg-Doped P-Gan?, John S. Colton, P. Y. Yu Apr 2001

What Determines The Emission Peak Energy Of The Blue Luminescence In Highly Mg-Doped P-Gan?, John S. Colton, P. Y. Yu

Faculty Publications

We report a study of the 2.8 eV blue luminescence (BL) in heaviliy Mg-doped p-GaN via resonant excitation with a tunable blue dye laser. The dependence of the BL on the excitation photon energy (Eex) is unlike that of the yellow luminescence found in n-type GaN. An Urbach-type band tail, with Urbach parameter of 33 meV is observed in the vicinity of the BL energy. We propose that the peak energy of the BL marks the transition from localized states to delocalized states within this band tail.

Catastrophic Wildfire And Number Of Populations As Factors Influencing Risk Of Extinction For Gila Trout (Oncorhynchus Gilae), D. Kendall Brown, Anthony A. Echelle, David L. Propst, James E. Brooks, William L. Fisher Apr 2001

Catastrophic Wildfire And Number Of Populations As Factors Influencing Risk Of Extinction For Gila Trout (Oncorhynchus Gilae), D. Kendall Brown, Anthony A. Echelle, David L. Propst, James E. Brooks, William L. Fisher

Western North American Naturalist

We used the computer program RAMAS to explore the sensitivity of an extinction-risk model for the Gila trout (Oncorhynchus gilae) to management of wildfires and number of populations of the species. The Gila trout is an endangered salmonid presently restricted to very few headwaters of the Gila and San Francisco river tributaries in southwestern New Mexico. Life history data for 10 extant populations were used to examine sensitivity of the species viability to changes in a variety of factors including population size, fecundity, life stage structure, number of populations, severity and probability of forest fires, and a regulated …

Quasi-Model-Independent Search For New High PT Physics At D0, B. Abbott, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Apr 2001

Quasi-Model-Independent Search For New High PT Physics At D0, B. Abbott, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

We apply a quasi-model-independent strategy (“Sleuth”) to search for new high pT physics in ≈100 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV collected by the D0 experiment during 1992–1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron. We systematically analyze many exclusive final states and demonstrate sensitivity to a variety of models predicting new phenomena at the electroweak scale. No evidence of new high pT physics is observed.

Relationship Between Home Range Characteristics And The Probability Of Obtaining Successful Global Positioning System (Gps) Collar Positions For Elk In New Mexico, James R. Biggs, Kathryn D. Bennett, Phil R. Fresquez Apr 2001

Relationship Between Home Range Characteristics And The Probability Of Obtaining Successful Global Positioning System (Gps) Collar Positions For Elk In New Mexico, James R. Biggs, Kathryn D. Bennett, Phil R. Fresquez

Western North American Naturalist

We compared the ability of global positioning system (GPS) radio collars deployed on elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) to obtain valid positions (position acquisition rate [PAR]) in seasonal home ranges with differing vegetation and topographical characteristics. We also compared GPS collar PARs under varying levels of cloud cover and within differing daily time periods. We recorded a mean PAR of 69% (n = 10 elk, s = 14%) for collared elk. Multiple regression analysis of seasonal home range characteristics indicated that vegetation cover type and slope, either as individual variables or in combination with one another, were not …

Nest Site Selection By Mountain Plovers (Charadrius Montanus) In A Shrub-Steppe Habitat, Ann E. Ellison Manning, Clayton M. White Apr 2001

Nest Site Selection By Mountain Plovers (Charadrius Montanus) In A Shrub-Steppe Habitat, Ann E. Ellison Manning, Clayton M. White

Western North American Naturalist

Habitat use by Mountain Plovers was studied in Duchesne County, Utah, from 1996 to 1998. This area is a shrub-steppe habitat and is different from the shortgrass prairie where current Mountain Plover breeding densities are greatest. Mountain Plovers prefer areas of short, sparse vegetation. Habitat surveys quantified vegetation and open space composition at nest and randomly selected sites. Data gathered in 1998 showed significant differences between nest and random sites in maximum vegetation height (P = 0.0021) and percentage total rock cover (P = 0.0027). As percentage rock cover also reflects open space, these results are consistent with …

On The Meromorphic Extension Of The Spherical Functions On Noncompactly Causal Symmetric Spaces, G. Ólafsson, A. Pasquale Apr 2001

On The Meromorphic Extension Of The Spherical Functions On Noncompactly Causal Symmetric Spaces, G. Ólafsson, A. Pasquale

Faculty Publications

We determine integral formulas for the meromorphic extension in the λ-parameter of the spherical functions φλ on a noncompactly causal symmetric space. The main tool is Bernstein's theorem on the meromorphic extension of complex powers of polynomials. The regularity properties of φλ are deduced. In particular, the possible λ-poles of φλ are located among the translates of the zeros of the Bernstein polynomial. The translation parameter depends only on the structure of the symmetric space. The expression of the Bernstein polynomial is conjectured. The relation between the Bernstein polynomial and the product formula of the cΩ-function is analyzed. The conjecture …

Helium Emission From Classical T Tauri Stars: Dual Origin In Magnetospheric Infall And Hot Wind, Georgina Beristain, Suzan Edwards, John Kwan Apr 2001

Helium Emission From Classical T Tauri Stars: Dual Origin In Magnetospheric Infall And Hot Wind, Georgina Beristain, Suzan Edwards, John Kwan

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

High-resolution emission-line profiles of He I and He II in 31 classical T Tauri stars are analyzed with the aim of probing the environs of the star-disk interface in accreting low-mass young stars. The diagnostic power of the helium lines lies in their high-excitation potentials, which restrict their formation to a region either of high temperature or close proximity to a source of ionizing radiation. The He I profiles are decomposed into kinematic components that support the paradigm of magnetically controlled accretion from the disk onto the stellar surface but also require a significant contribution from a hot wind. A …
