The Peculiar Motions Of Early-Type Galaxies In Two Distant Regions -- Vii. Peculiar Velocities And Bulk Motions, Matthew Colless, R. P. Saglia, David Burstein, Roger L. Davies, Robert K. Mcmahan Jr, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present peculiar velocities for 85 clusters of galaxies in two large volumes at distances between 6000 and 15 000 km s−1 in the directions of Hercules-Corona Borealis and Perseus-Pisces-Cetus (the EFAR sample). These velocities are based on Fundamental Plane (FP) distance estimates for early-type galaxies in each cluster. We fit the FP using a maximum likelihood algorithm which accounts for both selection effects and measurement errors, and yields FP parameters with smaller bias and variance than other fitting procedures. We obtain a best-fitting FP with coefficients consistent with the best existing determinations. We measure the bulk motions of …

Monitoring Raccoon Populations To Maximize Efficacy Of A Fixed-Cost Control Budget For Reducing Predation On Sea Turtle Nests, Richard M. Engeman, Bernice Constantin, Ryan Noel, John D. Woolard May 2001

Monitoring Raccoon Populations To Maximize Efficacy Of A Fixed-Cost Control Budget For Reducing Predation On Sea Turtle Nests, Richard M. Engeman, Bernice Constantin, Ryan Noel, John D. Woolard

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The fundamental focus for the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge on Florida's east coast is to provide and protect nesting habitat for three threatened or endangered sea turtle species. Nesting and hatching by three sea turtle species spans from early spring to fall each year. Left unchecked, predation by raccoons would destroy a high proportion of turtle nests. Raccoon removal is applied to reduce nest predation, but available funding only allows for about a one person-month control contract. We maximized the economical efficiency of this control budget by using a passive tracking index to: 1) optimize the timing and strategy …

Supernumerary Spacing Of Rainbows Produced By An Elliptical-Cross-Section Cylinder. Ii. Experiment, Charles L. Adler, David Phipps, Kirk W. Saunders, Justin K. Nash, James A. Lock May 2001

Supernumerary Spacing Of Rainbows Produced By An Elliptical-Cross-Section Cylinder. Ii. Experiment, Charles L. Adler, David Phipps, Kirk W. Saunders, Justin K. Nash, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

We measured the supernumerary spacing parameter of the first- and second-order rainbows of two glass rods, each having an approximately elliptical cross section, as a function of the rod's rotation angle. We attribute large fluctuations in the supernumerary spacing parameter to small local inhomogeneities in the rod's refractive index. The low-pass filtered first-order rainbow experimental data agree with the prediction of ray-tracing-wave-front modeling to within a few percent, and the second-order rainbow data exhibit additional effects that are due to rod nonellipticity. Using Genetic Algorithms And Swat To Minimize Sediment Yield From An Agriculturally Dominated Watershed, Misgana K. Muleta, John W. Nicklow May 2001

Using Genetic Algorithms And Swat To Minimize Sediment Yield From An Agriculturally Dominated Watershed, Misgana K. Muleta, John W. Nicklow

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Non-point source pollution is well recognized as one of the most critical environmental hazards of modern times. In Illinois, non-point source pollution is the major cause of water quality problems, and soil erosion from agricultural lands is the major source of such pollution. Accelerated by anthropogenic activities, soil erosion reduces crop productivity and leads to subsequent problems from deposition on farmlands and in water bodies. Watershed management, however, promotes protection and restoration of these natural resources while allowing for sustainable economic growth and development. In this study a discrete time optimal control methodology and computational model are developed for determining …

Acceleration Of ³He Nuclei At Interplanetary Shocks, Mihir I. Desai, Glenn M. Mason, Joseph R. Dwyer, Joseph E. Mazur, Charles W. Smith, Ruth M. Skoug May 2001

Acceleration Of ³He Nuclei At Interplanetary Shocks, Mihir I. Desai, Glenn M. Mason, Joseph R. Dwyer, Joseph E. Mazur, Charles W. Smith, Ruth M. Skoug

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We have surveyed the 0.5-2.0 MeV nucleonˉ¹ ion composition of 56 interplanetary (IP) shocks observed with the Ultra - Low-Energy Isotope Spectrometer on board the Advanced Composition Explorer from 1997 October 1 through 2000 November 30. Our results show the first ever measurement (25 cases) of ³He ions being accelerated at IP shocks. The ³He/⁴He ratio at the 25 shocks exhibited a wide range of values between 0.0014 and 0.24; the ratios were enhanced between factors of ∼3 and 600 over the solar wind value. During the survey period, the occurrence probability of ³He-rich shocks increased with rising solar activity …

Solid Phase Extraction Gas Chromatography/Electron Capture Detector Method For The Determination Of Organochlorine Pesticides In Wildlife Whole Blood, S. A. Volz, J.J. Johnston, D.L. Griffin May 2001

Solid Phase Extraction Gas Chromatography/Electron Capture Detector Method For The Determination Of Organochlorine Pesticides In Wildlife Whole Blood, S. A. Volz, J.J. Johnston, D.L. Griffin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A gas chromatographic method for the analysis of 10 organochlorine pesticides in 0.5 mL of whole blood is described. Sample preparation involved an ethyl ether and hexane extraction, followed by a silica solid phase extraction cleanup. The pesticides are quantified by gas chromatography/electron capture detection. Method limits of detection ranged from 1.1 to 5.2 μg/L. The mean and standard deviation for the recovery of 10 pesticides was 97.9 ± 5.5%. Recoveries from whole blood were comparable to recoveries from plasma. This indicates that the preparation of plasma is unnecessary for the quantification of organochlorine pesticides in blood. This approach is …
