Watershed Based Analysis Of Fecal Coliform Within The Back Bay Of Biloxi And Its Surrounding Streams, Matthew Edward Renick Aug 2001

Watershed Based Analysis Of Fecal Coliform Within The Back Bay Of Biloxi And Its Surrounding Streams, Matthew Edward Renick

Theses and Dissertations

In the development of the watershed, hydrodynamic, and water quality models for Back Bay of Biloxi in Mississippi, the Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources (BASINS 2.0) - Nonpoint Source Model (NPSM) was selected as the watershed model. The hydrodynamic and water quality models DNYHYD5 and EUTRO5 were selected as the tidally influenced bay models. The watershed model simulated nonpoint source flow and pollutant loadings for all sub-watersheds, routed flow and water quality, and accounted for all major point source discharges in the Back Bay of Biloxi watershed. Time varying output from the watershed model was applied directly …

The Design And Implementation Of An Image Segmentation System For Forest Image Analysis, Zhiling Long Aug 2001

The Design And Implementation Of An Image Segmentation System For Forest Image Analysis, Zhiling Long

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Forest Service (USFS) is developing software systems to evaluate forest resources with respect to qualities such as scenic beauty and vegetation structure. Such evaluations usually involve a large amount of human labor. In this thesis, I will discuss the design and implementation of a digital image segmentation system, and how to apply it to analyze forest images so that automated forest resource evaluation can be achieved. The first major contribution of the thesis is the evaluation of various feature design schemes for segmenting forest images. The other major contribution of this thesis is the development of a …

A Comparison Of Three Rapid Evaluation Procedures For Pine Savanna Wetlands, Cynthia Joan Henderson Aug 2001

A Comparison Of Three Rapid Evaluation Procedures For Pine Savanna Wetlands, Cynthia Joan Henderson

Theses and Dissertations

Inception of the Clean Water Act in 1972 resulted in regulation of activities in wetlands through Section 404. Regulatory agencies like the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) have tried to find methods to rapidly evaluate wetlands. This study compares three rapid evaluation methods, Hydrogeomorphic Approach (HGM), Wetlands Rapid Assessment Procedure (WRAP), and Wetland Evaluation System (WES), based on their scoring of a group of reference and mitigation wetland sites. Repeatability was studied by scoring a group of sites twice. The non-parametric Spearman?s correlation was used to compare the three methods. In this study, HGM was most repeatable followed by …

Hyper-Polynomial Hierarchies And The Polynomial Jump, Stephen Fenner, Steven Homer, Randall J. Pruim, Marcus Schaefer Aug 2001

Hyper-Polynomial Hierarchies And The Polynomial Jump, Stephen Fenner, Steven Homer, Randall J. Pruim, Marcus Schaefer

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Assuming that the polynomial hierarchy (PH) does not collapse, we show the existence of ascending sequences of ptime Turing degrees of length ω1/CK in PSPACE such that successors are polynomial jumps of their predecessors. Moreover these ptime degrees are all uniformly hard for PH. This is analogous to the hyperarithmetic hierarchy, which is defined similarly but with the (computable) Turing degrees. The lack of uniform least upper bounds for ascending sequences of ptime degrees causes the limit levels of our hyper-polynomial hierarchy to be inherently non-canonical. This problem is investigated in depth, and various possible structures for hyper-polynomial hierarchies are …

Heavy‐Element Diffusion In Metal‐Poor Stars, Brian Chaboyer, W. H. Fenton, Jenica E. Nelan, D. J. Patnaude, Francesca E. Simon Aug 2001

Heavy‐Element Diffusion In Metal‐Poor Stars, Brian Chaboyer, W. H. Fenton, Jenica E. Nelan, D. J. Patnaude, Francesca E. Simon

Dartmouth Scholarship

Stellar evolution models that include the effect of helium and heavy-element diffusion have been calculated for initial iron abundances of [Fe/H] = -2.3, -2.1, -1.9, and -1.7. These models were calculated for a large variety of masses and three separate mixing lengths, α = 1.50, 1.75, and 2.00 (with α = 1.75 being the solar calibrated mixing length). The change in the surface iron abundance for stars of different masses was determined for the ages of 11, 13, and 15 Gyr. Iron settles out of the surface convection zone on the main sequence ; this iron is dredged back up …

Yang-Lee Edge Singularities From Experimental High Field Magnetization Data, Christian Binek Aug 2001

Yang-Lee Edge Singularities From Experimental High Field Magnetization Data, Christian Binek

Christian Binek Publications

The isothermal magnetization m(H) of the metamagnet FeCl2 is measured in axial magnetic fields 0≤µ0Ha≤12 T at temperatures 34≤T≤53 K above the Néel temperature, where the system is essentially a two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet. The analysis of the data indicates experimental accessibility of the critical exponent µ of the Yang-Lee edge singularities. They manifest themselves in divergences of the density functions g(θ), which quantify the distribution of the zeros of the partition function on the Lee-Yang unit circle in the complex plane. In accordance with the hypothesis of universality, a critical exponent close to the theoretical prediction for the two-dimensional Ising …

A Hypnotist Teaches Math: The Effect Of Person Centered Math Support Classes On At-Risk Community College Students, Ron Bell Aug 2001

A Hypnotist Teaches Math: The Effect Of Person Centered Math Support Classes On At-Risk Community College Students, Ron Bell

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

The same elements which make Ericksonian hypnosis a highly effective therapeutic tool are found to be at work in an algebra support class called Math Success Orientation. Interpersonal dynamics of Carl Rogers’ person centered approach to counseling are also part of the philosophy of the class which has a four semester track record of improving both grades and attitude in at risk, math avoidant community college students. The article relates the history of the course with illustrations of how the elements of Person Centered Mathematics operate in the classroom. An appendix demonstrates the effect of the class on student grades

Improvement Of Image Alignment Using Camera Attitude Information, Yuri Rzhanov, Lloyd C. Huff, Randy G. Cutter Jr.

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

We discuss a proposed technique for incorporation of information from a variety of sensors in a video imagery processing pipeline. The auxiliary information allows one to simplify computations, effectively reducing the number of independent parameters in the transformation model. The mosaics produced by this technique are adequate for many applications, in particular habitat mapping. The algorithm, demonstrated through simulations and hardware configuration, is described in detail

Dual Perms, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

This article responds to the challenge set by Hugo Brandt Corstius in the May 2001 issue of Word Ways. He sought pairs of words that contained the same letters (i.e., permutations of each other), which were dual in the sense that a position occupied a vowel in one was occupied by consonant in the other. This article takes vowel to mean one of A, E, I, O, or U.

Emotional Intelligence In Adolescents: How It Relates To Giftedness, Sean Corso Aug 2001

Emotional Intelligence In Adolescents: How It Relates To Giftedness, Sean Corso

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The current study addresses the concept of emotional intelligence and how it relates to gifted adolescents. Until recently, it was not possible to test the theory of emotional intelligence. With the advent of the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory and BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version, it became possible for the first time, to measure emotional intelligence in adults and adolescents. However, up to this point, there has been very little if any empirical research conducted with gifted adolescents and emotional intelligence. In addition, there has been a long-standing debate within the scientific literature concerning the social emotional adjustment of academically …
