Applying Habitat Equivalency Analysis For Coral Reef Damage Assessment And Restoration, J. Walter Milon, Richard E. Dodge (Editor)

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Quantifying economic damages and restoration measures for injuries to coral reefs has been a difficult task. In the U.S., habitat equivalency analysis (HEA) has emerged as a novel tool that combines biological and economic information to identify replacement habitats of an appropriate scale to substitute for the interim losses resulting from coral reef injuries. This article provides a review of the basic principles underlying HEA and a discussion of important considerations in applying HEA. These considerations include: how to describe coral reef functions and related human uses, recovery rates of coral reef organisms at injured sites with natural and active …

Infrared Spectroscopy Of H-Bonded Bridges Stretched Across The Cis-Amide Group: Ii. Ammonia And Mixed Ammonia/Water Bridges, A. V. Fedorov, John R. Cable, Joel R. Carney, Timothy S. Zwier

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Clusters of two model cis amides, oxindole and 3,4-dihydro-2(IH)-quinolinone, containing one and two ammonia molecules have been studied in the IR hydride stretch region using resonant ion-dip IR spectroscopy. The spectra confirm that ammonia is able to form hydrogen-bonded bridges across the adjacent amide N-H and C=O sites in a manner very similar to that of water. Such bridged structures require that ammonia assume the role of a hydrogen bond donor. Further similarities of the hydrogen bonding capabilities of ammonia and water have been revealed by investigations of ternary clusters containing an amide, one ammonia, and one water molecule. Experimentally, …

The Impact Of Test Suite Granularity On The Costeffectiveness Of Regression Testing, Gregg Rothermel, Sebastian Elbaum, Alexey Malishevsky, Praveen Kallakuri, Brian Davia Sep 2001

The Impact Of Test Suite Granularity On The Costeffectiveness Of Regression Testing, Gregg Rothermel, Sebastian Elbaum, Alexey Malishevsky, Praveen Kallakuri, Brian Davia

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Regression testing is an expensive testing process used to validate software following modifications. The cost-effectiveness of regression testing techniques varies with characteristics of test suites. One such characteristic, test suite granularity, involves the way in which test inputs are grouped into test cases within a test suite. Various cost-benefits tradeoffs have been attributed to choices of test suite granularity, but almost no research has formally examined these tradeoffs. To address this lack, we conducted several controlled experiments, examining the effects of test suite granularity on the costs and benefits of several controlled experiments, examining the effects of test suite granularity …

Applying An Integrated Urban Model In The Evaluation Of Travel Demand Management Policies In The Sacramento Region: Year Two, Mti Report 01-08, Robert A. Johnston

Mineta Transportation Institute

In this study, the authors apply an integrated land use and transportation model, the Sacramento MEPLAN model, to evaluate transit investment alternatives combines with supportive land use policies and pricing policies in the Sacramento region. The current study builds upon the year-one study (Johnson et. al., 2000) in two important respects. First, the study employs a second version of the Sacramento MEPLAN model that explicitly represents floorspace consumption in the land use component of the model. Second, the transit, land use and pricing policies evaluated in the year-two project as expanded and refined in this study in response to the …

What Is Eva?, Joel Stern

IIMB Management Review

There is no way to measure your performance contemporaneously, period by period. The way people try to incentivize net present value is by using stock options or restricted shares or something like that. But we have taken net present value, which is what the accountants call a stock concept, and converted it into a flow concept, one that can be measured contemporaneously year-by-year. We have put the incentives and the tools in place, to reinforce that. So on acquisitions, for example, you will not be the one to drop out of the bidding contest. I will show you how we …

Site-Dependent Differences In Artificial Reef Function: Implications For Coral Reef Restoration, Robin L. Sherman, David S. Gilliam, Richard E. Spieler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

There is an increasing use of artificial structure in coral reef restoration (for references, see Spieler et al., this volume). Often artificial reef structures are chosen for a restoration project simply because they were used elsewhere. However, it is questionable whether the results obtained at one restoration site can be extrapolated to another. In recent years, several studies have examined the effect of artificial reef site selection on formation of associated fish, algae, and/or invertebrate assemblages (Alevizon et al., 1985; Blinova et al., 1994; Bombace et al., 1994; Caley and St. John, 1996; Chang, 1985; Haughton and Aiken, 1989; Hixon …

Artificial Substrate And Coral Reef Restoration: What Do We Need To Know To Know What We Need, Richard E. Spieler, David S. Gilliam, Robin L. Sherman

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

To use artificial substrate effectively in coral reef restoration certain basic knowledge is required: (1) what is the artificial substrate expected to accomplish relative to the goals of the restoration effort and (2) what are the expected interactions of the selected substrate’s composition, texture, orientation, and design with the damaged environment and the biota of interest. Whereas the first point is usually clear, at least in general terms, the second is not. In this review, we examine: the functions of artificial substrate in restoration and some of the physical (i.e., composition; surface texture; color and chemistry; and design in terms …

Degradation Of Reef Structure, Coral And Fish Communities In The Red Sea By Ship Groundings And Dynamite Fisheries, Bernhard Riegl Sep 2001

Degradation Of Reef Structure, Coral And Fish Communities In The Red Sea By Ship Groundings And Dynamite Fisheries, Bernhard Riegl

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Reef degradation was investigated on 66 Egyptian Red Sea reefs—60 reefs for dynamite damage (using line transects) and six ship grounding sites (using 1 m sample squares). Ship groundings and dynamite fishing caused similar damage, reduction of the reef to rubble (65% of reefs were dynamited, mostly leeward, 58%). Changes in coral (line transect study) and fish communities (point count study) in impacted sites were documented. On impacted reefs, coral cover decreased, bare substratum and rubble increased, and fish dominance shifted away from Pomacentridae. Oceanographic conditions result in a stable pattern of coral communities (windward Acropora, leeward Porites). …

Monotone Solutions Of A Nonautonomous Differential Equation For A Sedimenting Sphere, Andrew Belmonte, Jon T. Jacobsen, Anandhan Jayaraman Sep 2001

Monotone Solutions Of A Nonautonomous Differential Equation For A Sedimenting Sphere, Andrew Belmonte, Jon T. Jacobsen, Anandhan Jayaraman

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We study a class of integrodifferential equations and related ordinary differential equations for the initial value problem of a rigid sphere falling through an infinite fluid medium. We prove that for creeping Newtonian flow, the motion of the sphere is monotone in its approach to the steady state solution given by the Stokes drag. We discuss this property in terms of a general nonautonomous second order differential equation, focusing on a decaying nonautonomous term motivated by the sedimenting sphere problem

Strike One—You’Re Out! Wildlife Services Helps Reduce Wildlife Conflicts At Airports

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

Collisions between aircraft and wildlife at airports have risen dramatically in recent years as a result of large population increases in many wildlife species, faster airplanes, and the increase in air transportation traffic. Every year between 1991 and 1997, wildlife strikes cost U.S. civil aviation more than $300 million and 500,000 hours of aircraft downtime. About 2,400 bird strikes to civil aircraft are reported each year, and more than 2,500 are reported by the U.S. Air Force. Since 1990, more than 300 deer collisions with aircraft have been reported to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Collision-Induced Electronic Energy Transfer From V=0 Of The E(0g+) Ion-Pair State In I2: Collisions With I2(X), Christopher J. Fecko , '98, Miriam Arak Freedman , '00, Thomas Alex Stephenson

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The collision-induced electronic energy transfer that occurs when I-2 in the E(0(g)(+)) ion-pair electronic state collides with ground electronic state I-2 has been investigated. We prepare I-2 in single rotational levels in v = 0 of the E state using two-color double resonance laser excitation. The resulting emission spectrum shows that the nearby (DeltaT(e) = -385 cm(-1)) D(0(u)(+)) electronic state is populated. The cross section for collision-induced E -->D energy transfer is found to be IS - 3 Angstrom (2). A range of D state vibrational levels are populated, consistent with a model in which overlap between the initial …

Framework For Internet Banking Security, Jai Ganesh, T R Madanmohan

IIMB Management Review

The way customers are using financial services is changing rapidly. Today’s financial services are characterised by individuality, mobility, independence of place and time, and flexibility. The Internet, based on client server technology, has facilitated this change. Financial services companies are using the Internet as a new distribution channel, offering complex products at lower transaction costs to more potential customers. This also allows customers to access the service from any part of the world at any time, which they are doing through a range of intelligent information access and processing devices which include PDAs and mobile phones. Financial institutions can use …

Stern Measures: In Conversation With Joel Stern, S Venkatesh

IIMB Management Review

The financial evaluation tool that his company devised and grew. Elaborating on how it differs from the accountants’ measure of value and is an accurate measure of shareholder value, Stern claimed that EVA was emerging as a strong consulting practice in India, thanks to the sharpness of the quantitative side of the Indian brain. Defending EVA against Prof Zimmerman’s criticism, Stern strongly positioned EVA as a tool for evaluation, incentivization, and strategic decision making

A Study Of The Effect Of Reception Of Works Of Art Through An Interactive Cd-Rom, László Halász, Károly Hantos, Balázs Faa

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article, "A Study of the Effect of Reception of Works of Art through an Interactive CD-ROM," Halász, Hantos, and Faa collected data on the aesthetic impact of art objects through multimedia. They constructed a CD-ROM out of various images, sounds and text. Items were offered to 135 secondary school subjects in the framework of directed interactive polychrome variations. The effect was studied partly by measuring viewing (reading) times for each item, and partly by semantic differential and attitude scales. The data for viewing time and phases, and of items of the semantic differential and attitude scales were analyzed …
