Computing Cyclomatic Complexity With Cubic Flowgraphs, Yongming Tang, Ali H. Dogru, Franz J. Kurfess, Murat M. Tanik Sep 2001

Computing Cyclomatic Complexity With Cubic Flowgraphs, Yongming Tang, Ali H. Dogru, Franz J. Kurfess, Murat M. Tanik

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Two new methods for the computation of cyclomatic complexity especially for decomposable representations are introduced. Building software by integration is a developing paradigm, especially enabled by the emerging component technologies. Decomposition of the design for a top-down approach is a prerequisite for this paradigm. Cubic flowgraphs are instrumental in providing formalisms for decomposition and integration. Cyclomatic complexity analysis of a design representation that is decomposable is the goal of this research. In addition to introducing cyclomatic complexity computation using cubic flowgraphs, preservation of cyclomatic complexity in the decomposition of the cubic flowgraph is also presented.

A Nonlinear Motion Cueing Algorithm With A Human Perception Model, Robert J. Telban Sep 2001

A Nonlinear Motion Cueing Algorithm With A Human Perception Model, Robert J. Telban

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

The objective of a motion system, when used in conjunction with a visual system, is to stimulate the pilot so that he can perceive the required motion cues necessary to fly the simulator within the same performance and control activity as the aircraft. An example of a motion system is the six-degree-of-freedom hexapod shown in Figure E.l. Platform motion allows the pilot to react more quickly to simulated aircraft motion as compared to visual stimuli alone, thus enabling him to co1Tect (and reduce the magnitude) of any deviation sooner than having to wait for the information visually. Without motion cues …

A Transaction Model To Improve Data Availability In Mobile Computing, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Bharat Bhargava Sep 2001

A Transaction Model To Improve Data Availability In Mobile Computing, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Bharat Bhargava

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We incorporate a prewrite operation before a write operation in a mobile transaction to improve data availability. A prewrite operation does not update the state of a data object but only makes visible the future value that the data object will have after the final commit of the transaction. Once a transaction reads all the values and declares all the prewrites, it can pre-commit at mobile host (MH) (computer connected to unreliable mobile communication network). The remaining transaction's execution (writes on database) is shifted to the mobile service station (MSS) (computer connected to the reliable fixed network). Writes on database …

Stochastic Functional Differential Equations On Manifolds, Rémi Léandre, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed

Articles and Preprints

In this paper, we study stochastic functional differential equations (sfde's) whose solutions are constrained to live on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to such sfde's. We consider examples of geometrical sfde's and establish the smooth dependence of the solution on finite-dimensional parameters.

Whose Limit Is It Anyway?, Joseph E. Borzellino

Mathematics

In a tongue-in-cheek manner, we investigate the notion of limit. We illustrate some of its shortcomings and show that addressing these shortcomings can often lead to unexpected consequences.

Comment On “Photodetachment In Combined Static And Dynamic Electric Fields”`, Ilya I. Fabrikant, M.V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The theoretical analysis of C. Rangan and A. R. P. Rau [Phys. Rev. A 61, 033405 (2000)] on the process of photodetachment of H- in a strong static electric field, which calls into question the predictions of B. Gao and A. F. Starace [Phys. Rev. A 42, 5580 (1990)] and also of M. Q. Bao et al. [Phys. Rev. A 58, 411 (1998)], is shown in this Comment to be incorrect. First, we point out that a number of assumptions of Rangan and Rau’s analysis rest on tenuous theoretical grounds. Second, we adduce two completely independent and different …

Invariant Spinor Representations Of Finite Rotation Matrices, N. L. Manakov, A. V. Meremianin, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Our recent results [N. L. Manakov et al., Phys. Rev. A 57, 3233 (1998); 61, 022103 (2000)] on the invariant representations of finite rotation matrices (FRM’s) of integer rank j (in terms of tensor products of vectors connected with a space-fixed reference frame) are generalized here for the general case of arbitrary (i.e., integer or half-integer) rank j. This extension is carried out by using new spinor representations of FRM’s in terms of specially introduced spinor-annihilation operators. We demonstrate that all widely used, standard representations of FRM’s follow as special cases of our invariant representation for particular parametrizations …

Decomposition Of Protein Tryptophan Fluorescence Spectra Into Log-Normal Components. Ii. The Statistical Proof Of Discreteness Oftryptophan Classes In Proteins, Yana K. Reshetnyak, Edward A. Burstein

Physics Faculty Publications

The physical causes for wide variation of Stokes shift values in emission spectra of tryptophan fluorophores in proteins have been proposed in the model of discrete states (Burstein, E. A., N. S. Vedenkina, and M. N. Ivkova. 1973. Photochem. Photobiol. 18:263–279; Burstein, E. A. 1977a. Intrinsic Protein Luminescence (The Nature and Application). In Advances in Science and Technology (Itogi Nauki i Tekhniki), Biophysics Vol. 7. VINITI, Moscow [In Russian]; Burstein, E. A. 1983. Molecular Biology (Moscow) 17:455–467 [In Russian; English translation]). It was assumed that the existence of the five most probable spectral classes of emitting tryptophan residues and differences …

Decomposition Of Protein Tryptophan Fluorescence Spectra Into Log-Normal Components. I. Decomposition Algorithms, Edward A. Burstein, Sergei M. Abornev, Yana K. Reshetnyak

Physics Faculty Publications

Two algorithms of decomposition of composite protein tryptophan fluorescence spectra were developed based on the possibility that the shape of elementary spectral component could be accurately described by a uniparametric log-normal function. The need for several mathematically different algorithms is dictated by the fact that decomposition of spectra into widely overlapping smooth components is a typical incorrect problem. Only the coincidence of components obtained with various algorithms can guarantee correctness and reliability of results. In this paper we propose the following algorithms of decomposition: (1) the SImple fitting procedure using the root-Mean- Square criterion (SIMS) operating with …

Applying Habitat Equivalency Analysis For Coral Reef Damage Assessment And Restoration, J. Walter Milon, Richard E. Dodge (Editor) Sep 2001

Applying Habitat Equivalency Analysis For Coral Reef Damage Assessment And Restoration, J. Walter Milon, Richard E. Dodge (Editor)

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Quantifying economic damages and restoration measures for injuries to coral reefs has been a difficult task. In the U.S., habitat equivalency analysis (HEA) has emerged as a novel tool that combines biological and economic information to identify replacement habitats of an appropriate scale to substitute for the interim losses resulting from coral reef injuries. This article provides a review of the basic principles underlying HEA and a discussion of important considerations in applying HEA. These considerations include: how to describe coral reef functions and related human uses, recovery rates of coral reef organisms at injured sites with natural and active …

Infrared Spectroscopy Of H-Bonded Bridges Stretched Across The Cis-Amide Group: Ii. Ammonia And Mixed Ammonia/Water Bridges, A. V. Fedorov, John R. Cable, Joel R. Carney, Timothy S. Zwier Sep 2001

Infrared Spectroscopy Of H-Bonded Bridges Stretched Across The Cis-Amide Group: Ii. Ammonia And Mixed Ammonia/Water Bridges, A. V. Fedorov, John R. Cable, Joel R. Carney, Timothy S. Zwier

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Clusters of two model cis amides, oxindole and 3,4-dihydro-2(IH)-quinolinone, containing one and two ammonia molecules have been studied in the IR hydride stretch region using resonant ion-dip IR spectroscopy. The spectra confirm that ammonia is able to form hydrogen-bonded bridges across the adjacent amide N-H and C=O sites in a manner very similar to that of water. Such bridged structures require that ammonia assume the role of a hydrogen bond donor. Further similarities of the hydrogen bonding capabilities of ammonia and water have been revealed by investigations of ternary clusters containing an amide, one ammonia, and one water molecule. Experimentally, …

The Impact Of Test Suite Granularity On The Costeffectiveness Of Regression Testing, Gregg Rothermel, Sebastian Elbaum, Alexey Malishevsky, Praveen Kallakuri, Brian Davia Sep 2001

The Impact Of Test Suite Granularity On The Costeffectiveness Of Regression Testing, Gregg Rothermel, Sebastian Elbaum, Alexey Malishevsky, Praveen Kallakuri, Brian Davia

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Regression testing is an expensive testing process used to validate software following modifications. The cost-effectiveness of regression testing techniques varies with characteristics of test suites. One such characteristic, test suite granularity, involves the way in which test inputs are grouped into test cases within a test suite. Various cost-benefits tradeoffs have been attributed to choices of test suite granularity, but almost no research has formally examined these tradeoffs. To address this lack, we conducted several controlled experiments, examining the effects of test suite granularity on the costs and benefits of several controlled experiments, examining the effects of test suite granularity …

Applying An Integrated Urban Model In The Evaluation Of Travel Demand Management Policies In The Sacramento Region: Year Two, Mti Report 01-08, Robert A. Johnston

Mineta Transportation Institute

In this study, the authors apply an integrated land use and transportation model, the Sacramento MEPLAN model, to evaluate transit investment alternatives combines with supportive land use policies and pricing policies in the Sacramento region. The current study builds upon the year-one study (Johnson et. al., 2000) in two important respects. First, the study employs a second version of the Sacramento MEPLAN model that explicitly represents floorspace consumption in the land use component of the model. Second, the transit, land use and pricing policies evaluated in the year-two project as expanded and refined in this study in response to the …
