Why Unary And Binary Operations In Logic: General Result Motivated By Interval-Valued Logics, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, I. R. Goodman Mar 2001

Why Unary And Binary Operations In Logic: General Result Motivated By Interval-Valued Logics, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, I. R. Goodman

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Traditionally, in logic, only unary and binary operations are used as basic ones - e.g., "not", "and", "or" - while the only ternary (and higher order) operations are the operations which come from a combination of unary and binary ones. For the classical logic, with the binary set of truth values {0,1}, the possibility to express an arbitrary operation in terms of unary and binary ones is well known: it follows, e.g., from the well known possibility to express an arbitrary operation in DNF form. A similar representation result for [0,1]-based logic was proven in our previous paper. In this …

Gender Equality And Women's Issues In Vietnam: The Vietnamese Woman—Warrior And Poet, Wendy N. Duong Mar 2001

Gender Equality And Women's Issues In Vietnam: The Vietnamese Woman—Warrior And Poet, Wendy N. Duong

Washington International Law Journal

Exploration of women's issues in Vietnam strengthens the emerging voice of the "exotic other female" in contemporary international feminist discourse. Any women's movement in Vietnam today must be cast as the revitalization of the Vietnamese woman's collective cultural identity, rather than as a Western imported feminist doctrine. The Vietnamese woman's collective cultural identity is based on the history and cultural folklores of Vietnam, including expressions of feminist ideas in law and literature, and a long history of warfare and collective sufferings, wherein women have been seen as martyrs, national treasures, and laborers in war and in peace. The advocacy of …

The Other Millennium: Review Of Yesterdays Future: The Twentieth Century Begins. Michael E. Stevens, Ed., George W. Geib

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The widespread public interest and accompanying media hype surrounding the millennium celebrations of December 31, 1999, produced several interesting projects among historians and documentary editors. One of those is this slender volume, published in 1999 by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Yesterday's Future uses the pen and eye of the print media of a century ago to look at one state's responses to the coming of a new century. Intended as part of a series, "Voices of the Wisconsin Past," the book is a selection of nearly one hundred reports and opinions offered to Wisconsin newspaper readers a hundred …

Where Has Rotuman Culture Gone? And What Is It Doing There?, Alan Howard, Jan Rensel Mar 2001

Where Has Rotuman Culture Gone? And What Is It Doing There?, Alan Howard, Jan Rensel

Pacific Studies

This article explores the now-problematic concept of “culture” and related terms in the context of a diffuse transnational Rotuman population, more than three- fourths of whom live abroad in Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, and Europe. We begin by reflecting on prevailing criticisms of the culture concept, then present data in historical perspective on Rotuman communities in five different locations: Rotuma, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawai‘i. In presenting these data we examine the patterning effects of four key variables, in- cluding (1) macrosocietal attitudes, (2) the nature of the migration flow, (3) the size of communities, …

A Speech Interface To Genealogical Data, Deryle W. Lonsdale Mar 2001

A Speech Interface To Genealogical Data, Deryle W. Lonsdale

Faculty Publications

This talk presents an interface that has been developed to enable users to access genealogical information via speech. Whereas the more traditional approaches for accessing data are prevalent in today’s commercial genealogical products (e.g. windows, icons, and point-and-click methods), hands-free access to information is becoming increasingly popular. There would seem to be a potential demand for speech-based access to genealogical information, particularly among enthusiasts who might require mobile access, or those who are uncomfortable with or unable to use manual methods. Yet software to perform this function for genealogical access does not appear to be widely available yet.

The Place Of Form In The Fundamentals Of Law, Robert S. Summers Mar 2001

The Place Of Form In The Fundamentals Of Law, Robert S. Summers

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The author explains that there is scope for a general theory about the nature and place of form in the fundamentals of law. Form organizes the institutions, rules and other varieties of law, and the system as a whole. All such constructs have non-formal elements, too, but form unifies each construct and provides its criteria of identity. Appropriate form makes a system of law possible. It also tends to beget good content in the law. It is indispensable to the basic needs of a legal system, and when such an end is organizational, as with democracy, liberty, and the rule …

Gender, Literature, And Film In Contemporary East Central European Culture, Anikó Imre Mar 2001

Gender, Literature, And Film In Contemporary East Central European Culture, Anikó Imre

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Gender, Literature, and Film in Contemporary East Central European Culture," Anikó Imre discusses gender, literature, and film in Hungary in the context of East Central European national cultures of the 1980s and 1990s. Anikó Imre analyzes the analogous gender structures that underlie both nation and literature in these transitional cultures. She challenges both social science studies of post-communist transitions and studies of East Central European literatures and cultures for their traditional neglect of gendered desire as a political factor. Thereby, Imre adopts a deconstructionist, feminist, and post-colonial approach to Hungarian "postmodernist" literature and film, which, similar to …

Testimonial Poetry In East European Post-Totalitarian Literature, Albena Lutzkanova-Vassileva Mar 2001

Testimonial Poetry In East European Post-Totalitarian Literature, Albena Lutzkanova-Vassileva

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Testimonial Poetry in East European Post-Totalitarian Literature," Albena Lutzkanova-Vassileva reexamines the belief that postmodern literature and deconstructive writing have parted literary and theoretical discourse from reality, thereby obstructing and annihilating our access to history. Lutzkanova-Vassileva exemplifies her prognosis in an inquiry into post-totalitarian and postmodern Bulgarian literature and its texts of poetry. Born in the turmoil of communism's debacle, the analysis is an attempt to illustrate that, contrary to denying reference, postmodernism solely rejects the reduction of reference to a world that is perceptible and cognitively masterable. Rethinking what many have seen as a self-referential literature, with …

Translation Studies, Cultural Context, And Dante, Reuven Tsur Mar 2001

Translation Studies, Cultural Context, And Dante, Reuven Tsur

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Translation Studies, Cultural Context, and Dante," Reuven Tsur explores limits of legitimacy in translation studies. Tsur's approach is a critique of the theoretical assumptions and their application in Edoardo Crisafulli's cultural interpretation of Seamus Heaney's decisions in translating the Ugolino episode in Dante's Inferno. Crisafulli claims that Heaney's choices show internal consistency, and can be accounted for by appealing to "the Irish situational context." Instead, Tsur argues that Crisafulli's cultural interpretations are arbitrary and that a more satisfactory account can be offered through an analysis of constraints within a conception of the aesthetic object as an elegant …
