Education Faculty Articles and Research

The writers examine the globalization of capitalism and its implications for class, cultism, and multiculturalism. They cite the need for a revolutionary multicultural pedagogy that would connect the social identities of the marginalized and oppressed with their reproduction within capitalist production relations.

Language And Power In The Esl Classroom, Bonnie Jo Bustrum Apr 2001

Language And Power In The Esl Classroom, Bonnie Jo Bustrum

Masters Theses

Because of limited English proficiency and sociocultural knowledge, adult ESL students may be disadvantaged in determining, evaluating, and responding to American cultural demonstrations of power and authority through speech choices and nonverbal cues. As a first step toward a pedagogy that addresses this sociolinguistic need, this ethnography investigates aspects of power and language in the teacher-student relationship in the home countries of twenty-two adult ESL students. Student responses are analyzed and compared, and a pedagogical framework is proposed which may foster ESL students’ linguistic and social development toward greater access to information and a more informed process of enculturation into …

Tim Parks In Transatlantic Translation, Craig M. Scott Apr 2001

Tim Parks In Transatlantic Translation, Craig M. Scott

Articles & Book Chapters

While Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence in 2000, the author travelled to Milan to interview British-Italian author Tim Parks about his work to date on the occasion of publication of his (then) most recent novel, Destiny. Drawing on the interview, Parks’ own musings on his work on his website, and on a dozen of Parks’ published works, the author explores themes of writing as seduction, the tension between cultural distance and embeddedness as foundations of great writing, the dual centrality of language as style and language as being (as most clearly revealed in the …

Sankofa: A Study Into The Teaching Of History In The Ghanian Education System: A Case Study In Cape Coast Schools, Kyla Saphir

African Diaspora ISPs

I wanted to investigate how history is taught in the Ghanaian education systems at various levels and specifically in Cape Coast schools. I believe that history teaches people who they are and where they come from and thus equips them to learn from their past and prosper due to the analysis of the accomplishments and faults of their ancestors. I was curious to see how and what Ghanaians are taught about their past since their Western style education system has been structured after the British education system. I also wanted to find out how much is taught about the African …

Social Influence On Paranormal Beliefs, Barry N. Markovsky, Shane R. Thye Apr 2001

Social Influence On Paranormal Beliefs, Barry N. Markovsky, Shane R. Thye

Faculty Publications

In spite of strong public expressions of skepticism from the scientific community, polls show that more than nine out of ten American adults profess belief in paranormal phenomena. Some scientists view this as a social problem, directing much blame (but little research) at a variety of sources including lack of critical thinking skills, fads, need for transcendent experiences, failure of the educational system, and cultural cycles. Social impact theory provides an alternative focus: it views paranormal beliefs as a natural consequence of social influence processes in interpersonal settings. In this study, subjects in a laboratory experiment were informed that some …

The Influence Of Race On Ethical Decision-Making Regarding Nonsexual Dual Relationships, Beatrice Antly Tatem Apr 2001

The Influence Of Race On Ethical Decision-Making Regarding Nonsexual Dual Relationships, Beatrice Antly Tatem

Dissertations

Ethical decision-making is a crucial part of the daily practice of psychologists. Psychologists are faced with the challenge of developing ethical decision-making strategies that effectively address the dilemmas associated with dual relationships. Nonsexual dual relationship is defined in this research as a clinical professional relationship that occurs simultaneously with a nonsexual professional and/or personal relationship. Psychologists, regardless of the environment in which they work or the client population with whom they work, can experience a nonsexual dual relationship.

The current study investigated whether ethnographic therapist characteristics influence the interpretation and application of the APA Ethical Guidelines and thus psychologists’ decision-making …

How Peruvian Mothers Appraise Pneumonia And The Predictors Of Their Intention To Seek Medical Care When Their Children Have Signs Of Pneumonia, César Augusto Gálvez Apr 2001

How Peruvian Mothers Appraise Pneumonia And The Predictors Of Their Intention To Seek Medical Care When Their Children Have Signs Of Pneumonia, César Augusto Gálvez

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Pneumonia ranks first in health problems demanding attention, and second in the cause of mortality for children under five years old in Peru (Toledo, & Minaya, 1999). Studies about behavioral determinants that influence mothers to seek medical help for their child with signs of pneumonia do not focus on the contribution of the behavioral determinants to intention of seeking medical help.

Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and a cross-sectional design, the objectives of this study were to know first, Peruvian mothers' perceptions about knowledge and recognition of pneumonia, and about the government pneumonia campaign (GPC). Second, mothers' attitudes, …

"(Silence)": Scripting [It], Staging [It] On The Page, For The Stage, Clark Lunberry Apr 2001

"(Silence)": Scripting [It], Staging [It] On The Page, For The Stage, Clark Lunberry

English Faculty Research and Scholarship

The stage is no place for silence. The silence is no place for a stage. Like a white page upon which it is inscribed, presented as dramatic instruction—"(silence)"—the word is made into a mark, made into a bracketed moment, only to be instantly, noisily transformed into utterance. Mouths closed; the word erased but still seen, fully present and intended to form and function, to speak breathlessly. The speakers stop, pause, silent. On the page or on the stage, this instructed silence nevertheless stealthily expands and fills as a signified absence, inflating into a deliberately, paradoxically evacuated dimension; ink absorbed onto …

Investigating Probabilistic Constraint Dependency Grammars In Language Modeling, Wen Wang, Mary P. Harper Apr 2001

Investigating Probabilistic Constraint Dependency Grammars In Language Modeling, Wen Wang, Mary P. Harper

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This technical report concerns the development of a probabilistic Constraint Dependency Grammar (CDG) language model for speech recognition tasks. We have developed methods to quickly annotate a medium-sized carpus of sentences and extract high quality CDGs. We have also evaluated the quality of these grammars. Using the corpus of CDG parses, we have constructed and evaluated a language model that incorporates syntactically a.nd semantically enriched Part-of-Speech (POS) tags. The N-gram language model based on the enriched tags improves the perplexity and word error rate on the test corpus compared to a standard word-based N-gram language model and an N-gram POS-based …

Effects Of Adult Modeling On Literacy Behaviors Of Head Start Preschoolers, Stephanie L. Kerbel Apr 2001

Effects Of Adult Modeling On Literacy Behaviors Of Head Start Preschoolers, Stephanie L. Kerbel

Masters Theses

This project explored the uses of literacy artifacts in the dramatic play of preschool children from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds who live in poverty in Kalamazoo County. The purpose of this 9-week study was to determine the impact of adult modeling on the frequency and quality of use of literacy artifacts during the dramatic play of at-risk preschoolers. Two Head Start classrooms received different types of intervention: (a) a literacy-enriched dramatic play area with adult modeling for 5 minutes at the start of each play period ( once per week); and (b) a literacy-enriched dramatic play area without adult …

Is Feminism Bad For Multiculturalism?, Chandran Kukathas Apr 2001

Is Feminism Bad For Multiculturalism?, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Multiculturalism and feminism are in tension to the extent that multiculturalism is a doctrine that condones the tolera- tion of cultural communities which might not respect or value women's concerns or interests. This has led some feminist think- ers, notably Susan Okin, to ask whether multiculturalism is bad for women. This paper agrees with Okin that there is a tension between feminism and multiculturalism - some of her critics to the contrary notwithstanding - but argues that multiculturalism should take preceden

A Time To Keep Silent And A Time To Speak: The Functions Of Silence In The Lawyering Process, Stefan H. Krieger Apr 2001

A Time To Keep Silent And A Time To Speak: The Functions Of Silence In The Lawyering Process, Stefan H. Krieger

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this Article is to explore the theories of silence developed in other disciplines and apply them to an understanding of silence in different aspects of the lawyering process. This Article will first consider the purposes of speech and the general relationship between utterances and silence. It will then examine the various forms and functions of silence: pauses and hesitations; intervening silences; fore and after silences; silences to communicate assent; silences to promote discussion; silence as an assertion of power; deep silences communicating intense emotions; and silences to mark interpersonal distance. Then this Article will address cross-cultural differences …

Consumer Choice As The Ultimate Goal Of Antitrust, Robert H. Lande Apr 2001

Consumer Choice As The Ultimate Goal Of Antitrust, Robert H. Lande

All Faculty Scholarship

The mission of the antitrust laws need to be clarified, and this article asserts that the best way to do this is to interpret and enforce these laws in terms of consumer choice. This reformulation is necessary due to uncertainty and instability that exists in the field. This article will 1. define the consumer choice approach to antitrust or competition law and show how it differs from other approaches; 2. show that the antitrust statutes and theories of violation embody a concern for optimal levels of consumer choice; 3. show that the antitrust case law embodies a concern for optimal …

Charting A Course Through The Culture Storms: A Cautionary Tale, Ann Brosnahan, Faye Ch Lee Apr 2001

Charting A Course Through The Culture Storms: A Cautionary Tale, Ann Brosnahan, Faye Ch Lee

Journal of Extension

In our increasingly multicultural national and global societies, teaching about multiculturalism remains controversial and challenging. Based on experiences working with California's diverse population and current research in intercultural understanding, the authors describe an interactive diversity-training workshop for professionals and volunteers who work with children and youth. The workshop includes current research about intercultural understanding, an exploration of American cultural assumptions, and an opportunity for participants to identify strategies to improve their intercultural interactions. The model is based on sound adult learning theory, focuses on our capabilities rather than deficits, emphasizes our similarities rather than differences, and employs an ecological conception …
