Word Ways

Articles about American placenames in Word Ways have generally reflected their great diversity. But what about their commonality? There's lots of duplication among the names of American places. Isn't it time that we had an article appreciating that fact.

The Potential For Support Of Gardner's Theory Of The Naturalist Intelligence In Selected Elementary School Library Media Centers, Traci L. Haines May 2001

The Potential For Support Of Gardner's Theory Of The Naturalist Intelligence In Selected Elementary School Library Media Centers, Traci L. Haines

Theses and Dissertations

The concept of teaching to the ability of the child is complex. Each child absorbs, analyzes and processes information differently. Howard Gardner developed a series of eight intelligences describing the variety of ways in which children learn. This study focused on the Naturalist Intelligence, an ability to recognize and discriminate different concepts in nature. A naturalist learner has strong observational skills and is good at sorting and classifying (Checkley, 1997). This evaluation compares randomly selected samples of the collections of two elementary school library media centers in order to determine whether the books in the 500s support Gardner's Theory of …

The Relationship Between Social And Emotional Intelligence In Children, Shannon Herring May 2001

The Relationship Between Social And Emotional Intelligence In Children, Shannon Herring

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The relationship between social and emotional intelligence was investigated. The study sample consisted of 31 females and 28 males who were between the ages of 9 and 12. The student participants completed the Social Skills Rating System-Student Form (SSRS), which assesses social competence, and the Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version (EQ-i:YV), which measures emotional intelligence. Parents of the children also completed the Social Skills Rating System-Parent Form for comparison purposes. Both forms of the SSRS yielded statistically significant correlations with the EQ-i:YV. The results indicate that the instruments designed to assess emotional intelligence and social intelligence were highly related. The …

A Visit With Dr. Letrix, Michael Keith May 2001

A Visit With Dr. Letrix, Michael Keith

Word Ways

When I checked my e-mail that day, one address ([email protected]) caught my eye, though I didn't grasp its significance right away. When I opened it, the message just said "Twelfth Night, Act I, Scene V, Clown's 13th speech, 2nd sentence". I quickly pulled a copy of Shakespeare from the shelf and checked the reference, to find the admonishment.

There are two bibles in the world of Scrabble. There's the American bible, the Official Tournament and Club Word List, and there's the British bible. Official Scrabble Words, 4th Edition. Both sources are used widely throughout the world that plays English-language Scrabble. Some countries use one or the other source, and some countries use both sources together. The combination of these two sources is often referred to as "world dictionary".

Yes & No, Michael Keith

In the following poem, the first and last stanzas use only those letters found next to even digits (2, 4, 6, 8) on the telephone dial, while the middle two stanzas use only odd ones (3, 5, 7, 9). This method of dividing the alphabet puts about twice as many words into the first group (which gets the vowels AIOU) compared to the second (which gets only EY), while Q and Z cannot be used at all.

Gay Marriages And Civil Unions: Democracy, The Judiciary And Discursive Space In The Liberal Society, Mae Kuykendall May 2001

Gay Marriages And Civil Unions: Democracy, The Judiciary And Discursive Space In The Liberal Society, Mae Kuykendall

Mercer Law Review

The various states have given provisional answers to the socially volatile quest by gay couples for legal recognition of their relationships as marriage. The provisional quality of the policy-making is related to the status of the language of marriage as a contested site. The language evolves, but pressure exists to stall public acknowledgment of changes in descriptors for basic relationships. The prominence of language as itself a matter of dispute gives new and broadened meaning to classic arguments defending the judicial role on the grounds that courts function well to advance public discourse, particularly if they do not impose final …

Weaving Women’S Studies Into The Institutional Web: A Case Study, Frances Kraljic, Inez Martinez May 2001

Weaving Women’S Studies Into The Institutional Web: A Case Study, Frances Kraljic, Inez Martinez

Journal of International Women's Studies

Kingsborough Community College [KCC], one of six in the City University of New York [CUNY], a University containing eleven senior colleges, a medical and a law school, and a Graduate Center, is the first and only community college in CUNY to have a Women’s Studies [WS] Program. It took a long, long time to obtain this Program, and it has taken multi-faceted efforts to weave it into Kingsborough’s life in such a way as to (thus far) keep it. Because we believe that WS are particularly important at the community college level, we are sharing the story of the development …

Latino Children's Kindergarten Entry: Views Of Parents And Teachers, Shanda Stephens May 2001

Latino Children's Kindergarten Entry: Views Of Parents And Teachers, Shanda Stephens

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study examined parental and teacher expectations of kindergarten readiness of Latino children. The perceptions of Latino mothers, Latino fathers, and kindergarten teachers were analyzed and compared. Specifically, parents' and teachers' responses were compared in three areas: perceptions of what parents can do to prepare children for kindergarten, priorities for requisite kindergarten entry skills, and rankings of the importance of specified skills to be emphasized in kindergarten. Differences between kindergarten teachers' expectations for nonnative English-speaking children and native English-speaking children were also examined.

The parent sample consisted of 35 Latino mother/father pairs. All were parents of children who entered kindergarten …

Student Perceptions Of Service-Learning In The Community College, Ruben Michael Flores May 2001

Student Perceptions Of Service-Learning In The Community College, Ruben Michael Flores

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

United States Census Bureau projections predict that Whites' share of the population should decline from 75% in 1990 to 68% in 2010. Thus, mechanisms must be employed to facilitate cooperation and support among and across people from different ethnic and racial groups. This examination seeks to determine if service-learning is such a mechanism. The researcher utilized student experiences and perspectives, through a mixed qualitative/quantitative study, to determine the impact that a service-learning course had on a diverse group of students attending an urban community college.

The researcher originally sought to determine whether a community college service-learning course changed students' perceptions …

Proposition And Propaganda In The Hindered Hand: Or The Reign Of The Repressionist, Candace Paulette Thomas-Dismuke May 2001

Proposition And Propaganda In The Hindered Hand: Or The Reign Of The Repressionist, Candace Paulette Thomas-Dismuke

Theses (Pre-2016)

Sutton E. Griggs' The Hindered Hand or the Reign of the Repressionist is discursively reconstructed to prove its meritious qualities as a brilliant display of propaganda. Contextually, the speech acts of Ensal Ellwood, Earl Bluefield, Tiara Merlow, and Gus Martin are evaluated in this research to prove that Griggs is able to manipulate speechpatterns to conform to his audience's preferences regarding language. Theoretically, the double voice, hidden polemic, and functional uses of language are the theoretical approaches applied to the text. Insights from Henry Louis Gates' parodic narration, double voiced hidden polemic in African American literature and Roger Fowler's expressive …

Pedagogical Effects Of Service-Learning In A Human Exceptionality Course: A Comparison Of Two Approaches, John Clinton Mayhew Jr. May 2001

Pedagogical Effects Of Service-Learning In A Human Exceptionality Course: A Comparison Of Two Approaches, John Clinton Mayhew Jr.

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Service-learning. as a pedagogical approach for increasing social responsibility in students. has increasingly gained acceptance in higher education. With its emphasis on reflection and reciprocity. service-learning combines content-area learning with authentic community-based experiences in order to enhance understanding of the course content and to promote civic responsibility. Although several studies have investigated the effects of service-learning at the college level, few studies have specifically focused on the use of service-learning in special education.

The purpose of this study was to examine the service-learning component of an undergraduate human exceptionality course. One section of the course utilized an unlimited choice (UC) …

Computational Evolutionary Linguistics, Tracy Vancort May 2001

Computational Evolutionary Linguistics, Tracy Vancort

HMC Senior Theses

Languages and species both evolve by a process of repeated divergences, which can be described with the branching of a phylogenetic tree or phylogeny. Taking advantage of this fact, it is possible to study language change using computational tree building techniques developed for evolutionary biology. Mathematical approaches to the construction of phylogenies fall into two major categories: character based and distance based methods. Character based methods were used in prior work in the application of phylogenetic methods to the Indo-European family of languages by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. Discussion of the limitations of character-based models leads to a …

Individualism In The Age Of Internationalism, Alyson Cole May 2001

Individualism In The Age Of Internationalism, Alyson Cole

Michigan Law Review

In the brief conclusion to The Empowered Self: Law and Society in the Age of Individualism, Thomas M. Franck asserts that he cannot satisfactorily summarize his book's argument. Even if it were achievable, he clarifies, he would not engage in such an endeavor, since it would "preempt the reader's autonomy and subvert his or her individual rights" (p. 278). That the author himself rejects the desirability of doing what reviewers generally do (i.e., condense and inevitably simplify complex tomes) is perhaps a somewhat awkward way to commence a discussion of his book. Nevertheless, this comment illustrates the extent to which …
