Thinking Out Of The Box: One University's Experience With Foreign-Trained Teachers, Belinda Bustos Flores May 2001

Thinking Out Of The Box: One University's Experience With Foreign-Trained Teachers, Belinda Bustos Flores

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Texas like many states is facing a teacher shortage. The author suggests that the teacher shortage should be considered in light of the diverse school population. Across states there is a need for well-prepared teachers to work with linguistically and culturally diverse school populations. Thus, areas such as bilingual education continue to be critical shortage areas. While different attempts are currently underway to increase the number of preservice bilingual educators, another way districts have addressed this issue is to employ foreign-trained teachers as paraprofessionals or as teachers.Texas like many states is facing a teacher shortage. The author suggests that the …

A Communicative Journey From Dysfunctional-To-Functional In A Therapeutic Community For Substance Abuse, Victoria Jean Cramer May 2001

A Communicative Journey From Dysfunctional-To-Functional In A Therapeutic Community For Substance Abuse, Victoria Jean Cramer

Communication

The research question for this study explores change in the lived experience of the substance abuser whose life is moving from dysfunctional-to-functional and investigates how communication grounds this change in human interaction. Communication appears in experience as one changes from addictive substance dysfunctionality to a balanced functionality. The communicative processes, in the setting of a therapeutic community, are constructive to such transitions. The methodology for answering this question of how suggests addressing the lived experience of transition. Narrative analysis of the eight open-ended interviews produced three emergent themes. Those emergent themes are (1) isolation, (2) self-disclosure, and (3) connectedness. The …

An Analysis Of Participatory Communication For Development: Insights From Feminism And Social Construction, Alexa Mackellar Dare May 2001

An Analysis Of Participatory Communication For Development: Insights From Feminism And Social Construction, Alexa Mackellar Dare

Communication

This study examines participatory communication for development from a communication perspective. The purpose of this study is to elaborate on communication's central position in creating, maintaining and enacting participation. I use both a social construction perspective and a feminist perspective to analyze and elaborate on participatory communication for development. Implications for both the practice and the theory of participatory communication emerged from the analysis. Implications include the theoretical elaboration of dialogue, process, trust, and knowledge as informed by communication theory as well as practical suggestions for facilitation and responses to common critiques of participatory approaches to development. The feminist analysis …

The Man Behind The Bunny: Interview With Eduardo Kac, Sheila A. Malone May 2001

The Man Behind The Bunny: Interview With Eduardo Kac, Sheila A. Malone

SWITCH

An interview with artist Eduardo Kac about his work with transgenic art; specifically the work with Alba, the glowing rabbit. The interview focuses on Kac’s processes and collaborations with Louis-Marie Houdebine. Kac and Houdebine worked together in France to genetically create Alba’s glowing fur. Eventually, the collaboration came to an end and resulted in a legal battle between Eduardo and the Director of the Institute in which Alba was created, as they did not release her into Eduardo's care. The article concludes with a discussion of the use of a rabbit specifically for this project.

Multidisciplinarity And Cognitive Science, Barbara Von Eckardt May 2001

Multidisciplinarity And Cognitive Science, Barbara Von Eckardt

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The aim of Schunn, Crowley and Okada’s (1998) study is to address the question of whether the current state of cognitive science, as represented by Cognitive Science and the Cognitive Science Society, “reflects the multidisciplinary ideals of its foundation.” To properly interpret and respond to their results, we need to ask a prior question: What is cognitive science’s multidisciplinary ideal? There are at least two conceptions—a “localist” conception, which seems to be implicit in Schunn, Crowley and Okada’s discussion, and a “holist” conception. I argue that while both have been endorsed by some cognitive scientists, there are reasons for preferring …

Alu Insertion Polymorphisms And The Genetic Structure Of Human Populations From The Caucasus, Ivane Nasidze, Gregory M. Risch, Myles Robichaux, Stephen T. Sherry, Mark A. Batzer, Mark Stoneking May 2001

Alu Insertion Polymorphisms And The Genetic Structure Of Human Populations From The Caucasus, Ivane Nasidze, Gregory M. Risch, Myles Robichaux, Stephen T. Sherry, Mark A. Batzer, Mark Stoneking

Faculty Publications

An analysis of 8 Alu insertion loci (ACE, TPA25, PV92, APO, FXIIIB, D1, A25, B65) has been carried out in six populations from the Caucasus, including Indo-European-speaking Armenians; Altaic-speaking Azerbaijanians; North Caucasian-speaking Cherkessians, Darginians, and Ingushians; and South Caucasian (Kartvelian)-speaking Georgians. The Caucasus populations exhibit low levels of within-population variation and high levels of between-population differentiation, with the average Fst value for the Caucasus of 0.113, which is almost as large as the Fst value of 0.157 for worldwide populations. Maximum likelihood tree and principal coordinate analyses both group the Caucasus populations with European populations. Neither geographic nor linguistic relationships …

The Relationship Of The Language-Based Characteristics Of A Selected Group Of Post-Secondary Esl Students To Pass Rates On The New Jersey Basic Skills Reading Test, Tina Previtera May 2001

The Relationship Of The Language-Based Characteristics Of A Selected Group Of Post-Secondary Esl Students To Pass Rates On The New Jersey Basic Skills Reading Test, Tina Previtera

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between selected language-based predictors of reading competence and the reading performance of a group of college-level ESL students receiving Basic Skills instruction. It appeared that a language barrier was preventing this group of students from passing their Basic Skills Reading requirement. It was hypothesized that this resulted in a lack of necessary skills for comprehending standard English. Based on theoretical perspectives obtained from a review of the literature, the language-based characteristics needed to obtain a passing score on the Basic Skills Reading are vocabulary, short-term verbal memory, and broad linguistic …

The Effectiveness Of Increased Support By Special Education Teachers On The Academic Achievement Of Learning Disabled Students In Main Subject Area Inclusionary Classes At The Secondary Education Level When Compared To No In-Class Support, Kelly A. Fitzhenry

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of increased support by special education teachers on the academic achievement of learning disabled students in main subject area inclusionary classes at the secondary level when compared to no in class support. This information can help analyze the effectiveness of an inclusion program, validate successful inclusive educational policies that should be continued, and pinpoint the need for revision. Grade point average data of included learning disabled students in Core English II, Core B Math, and Introduction to Earth Science during the 94-95 academic year when no in class support was …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify current best practices when modifying an early childhood curriculum to facilitate inclusion of children with disabilities. A questionnaire consisting of twenty items pertaining to the benefits and barriers to an inclusive preschool program was distributed to thirty-four educators who service preschoolers with disabilities directly or indirectly.
