About Art, Baruch Blich
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, "About Art," Baruch Blich investigates why is art -- and especially modern art -- so difficult to understand? Why do art objects raise questions as to their status? Why scrutinizing art involves semiotics, philosophy of language, linguistics, epistemology, ontology, and even metaphysics? Why art is interpreted by psychoanalysis as well as by behaviorism and psychology of perception? What anthropology and sociology have to do with art and why do we witness art debated in the courtroom concerning copyright issues? In short -- what makes art a crossroad for many and sometimes conflicting disciplines? Is there something in …

Does Strength Of Phonological Representations Predict Phonological Awareness In Preschool Children?, Judith G. Foy, Virginia A. Mann
Psychological Science Faculty Works
Previous research has shown a clear relationship between phonological awareness and early reading ability. This article concerns some aspects of spoken language skill that may contribute to the development of phonological awareness, as manifested in rhyme awareness and phoneme awareness. It addresses the hypothesis that phonological awareness abilities are associated with measures that purportedly tap into the strength of phonological representations. We examined rhyme awareness, phoneme awareness, articulatory skill, speech perception, vocabulary, and letter and word knowledge in 40 children, aged 4 to 6, who were just beginning to be exposed to for-mat reading experiences in private preschools. The children …

Changing Roles Of Title I Reading Teachers In Light Of New Provisions And Teamteaching Model, Abha Gupta, Eileen S. Oboler
Changing Roles Of Title I Reading Teachers In Light Of New Provisions And Teamteaching Model, Abha Gupta, Eileen S. Oboler
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
We present the important and very complicated roles of the Title I Reading teacher in light of a new instructional paradigm: teamteaching. Following the 1994 reauthorization of Title I, Reading teachers often find themselves in multiple professional roles (Improving America's Schools Act, 1994). Based on observational data collected in our research on elementary school communities, five major categories of professional roles emerged (Oboler, 1993; Gupta and Oboler, 1998). We interpret Reading teachers' roles with respect to the new provisions found in the Interim Report, 1996, issued by the U.S. Department of Education (http://www.ed.gov/pubs/NatAssess), and Title I, Part A, Title I …
