Suppletion, Frequency And Lexical Storage., Andrew R. Hippisley Jan 2001

Suppletion, Frequency And Lexical Storage., Andrew R. Hippisley

Linguistics Faculty Publications

Suppletion impacts on theories of the lexicon, language change and language acquisition, and for this reason “is of considerable interest” (Mel’čuk 2000: 511). An observation often made is that there exists a relationship between suppletion and frequency (c.f. Bybee 1995, Greenberg 1996). A lexeme where there is a suppletive relationship between its word-forms usually falls within the group of higher frequency items. Because the relation is with high frequency, suppletion sheds light on the mental lexicon. High frequency words correlate with quick processing speeds, for example lexical decision times, suggesting a memory effect: the more frequently an item is accessed, …

Basic Blue In East Slavonic, Andrew R. Hippisley Jan 2001

Basic Blue In East Slavonic, Andrew R. Hippisley

Linguistics Faculty Publications

Russian’s second BLUE term goluboj ‘light blue’ constitutes a well-known exception to the Berlin and Kay basic color-term typology. If other Slavonic languages do not have a second BLUE term, then the special position of Russian requires explanation; if there is evidence pointing to two basic terms for BLUE, we have a second set of data for investigating the evolution of this unusual color system. The languages genetically closest to Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian, are examined. Findings of the list task, a simple and elegant test for psychological salience of color terms, provide strong evidence that Ukrainian and Belarusian have …

The Tension Between The Need And Exploitation Of Migrant Workers: Using Msawpa's Legislative Intent To Find A Balanced Remedy, Mark J. Russo Jan 2001

The Tension Between The Need And Exploitation Of Migrant Workers: Using Msawpa's Legislative Intent To Find A Balanced Remedy, Mark J. Russo

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Comment concludes that the recent Maine federal district cases represent an irreconcilable spike in a national and international trend to afford more protection to a vulnerable class whose resources are the object of urgent demand. However, the search for a proper remedial weight in the balance between migrant worker protection and the provision of competitive farm labor is not a new problem.

Individual Phonological Awareness Intervention For Children With Phonetically-Based Reading Difficulties, Kara E. Hilgenberg Jan 2001

Individual Phonological Awareness Intervention For Children With Phonetically-Based Reading Difficulties, Kara E. Hilgenberg

Masters Theses

Many researchers have reported that phonological awareness training is highly related to the acquisition of pre-reading skills (Ball & Blachman, 1991; Lundberg, Frost, & Peterson, 1988) and that phonological awareness should be a part of any good reading curriculum (Adams, 1990; Blachman, 1989). In addition, when phonological awareness is taught in the classroom it has been proven that class averages of phonological awareness skills improve (Blachman, 1991; Barnes, Smitley, & Throneburg, 1998). However, the research also suggests that students with speech and/or language disorders often exhibit poor reading skills (Gillam & Carlile, 1997; Menyuk & Chestnick, 1997). The purpose of …

The Effects Of Collaborative Versus Traditional Service Delivery On Narrative Language Arts Curricular Goals, Shara C. Barlage Jan 2001

The Effects Of Collaborative Versus Traditional Service Delivery On Narrative Language Arts Curricular Goals, Shara C. Barlage

Masters Theses

This study investigated the improvement of narrative language arts curricular goals in 140 school-aged children in first and second grade from an east central Illinois elementary school. The progress of non-communication disordered children as well as children with documented speech-language deficits was evaluated. Five classrooms (3 first and 2 second grade) received collaborative classroom-based lessons from the speech-language pathologist (SLP) and classroom teacher. Narrative curricular goals were targeted during whole-class collaborative lessons provided once a week for 30 minutes and incorporated children's storybooks as the theme. The subjects with speech-language deficits in the collaborative group received speech-language services from the …

Phonemic Awareness: One Approach To Individualized Instruction, Kimberly M. Ochs Jan 2001

Phonemic Awareness: One Approach To Individualized Instruction, Kimberly M. Ochs

Masters Theses

This study examined the effectiveness of a recently developed set of individualized lessons for kindergarten children at-risk for reading problems because of limited phonemic awareness skills. Four participants were selected via teacher referral and a score below the 25th percentile on the Test of Phonological Awareness. Sixteen lessons (focusing on six phonemes) and weekly assessments followed the selection of the participants. Each child was individually instructed in two 10-15 minute sessions each week for eight weeks and then given an assessment at the end of each week. Single case design was utilized to document the effectiveness of the …

The Nonverbal Communication Of Pain As Recognized By Alternative Health Care Providers, Jodi L. Pope Jan 2001

The Nonverbal Communication Of Pain As Recognized By Alternative Health Care Providers, Jodi L. Pope

Masters Theses

Recognizing nonverbal messages of pain in a health care setting is essential. The nonverbal communication of pain is a communication aspect typically overlooked in modern health care environments. This research surveyed alternative health care providers to determine what nonverbal behaviors they recognize as pain indicators and how they react to those behaviors. Massage therapists and chiropractors from a Midwest county filled out surveys and participated in a focus group. Fifty nonverbal pain indicators, such as guarding body parts, postural inequalities, gait, and clenched fists, among others, were charted. Several other topics such as learning how to determine nonverbal pain indicators, …

A Comparative Study Of Standard American English And Non-Standard American English Accents, Casey S. Gleason Jan 2001

A Comparative Study Of Standard American English And Non-Standard American English Accents, Casey S. Gleason

Masters Theses

Through the birth and maturation of the American society, dominant cultures have developed and become the accepted norm of America. However, with the constant flow of immigrants entering America, a variety of cultures and languages entered, also. The English language has remained the dominant language, while Standard American English has remained the dominant accent. Those who do not display Standard American English (SAE) often fall victim to a lower level of speaker credibility than those who speak SAE. One's sex may also affect speaker credibility due to different communication styles. The affect one's combination of accent and sex has on …

Winks, Blinks, Squints, And Twitches: Looking For Disability And Culture Through Our Son’S Left Eye, Philip M. Ferguson, Dianne L. Ferguson Jan 2001

Winks, Blinks, Squints, And Twitches: Looking For Disability And Culture Through Our Son’S Left Eye, Philip M. Ferguson, Dianne L. Ferguson

Education Faculty Articles and Research

In this article, we argue that while an appreciation of disability's cultural context is fundamental, we should be careful not to replace one essentialist version of disability with a new one. We look at the relational patterns that emerge from the specific circumstances of significant intellectual disability. This article follows Clifford Geertz’ well‐known account of the multiple layers of cultural context and interpretive richness raised by even a seemingly simple act such as winking. By exploring the meaning of son's ability to wink, we argue that intellectual disability may be interpreted as the absence of culture. The article goes on …

The Present Past: A Survey Of Work By David Leach, David Leach, Robert And Elaine Stein Galleries Jan 2001

The Present Past: A Survey Of Work By David Leach, David Leach, Robert And Elaine Stein Galleries

Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff

In 1982 printmaker and painter David Leach created a photo intaglio print titled Broken Line (fig .1) that records an illusion, a seeming change in angle of a twig partly immersed in water, an effect resulting from light refraction. The image might almost serve as commentary on Leach's production as artist. He has stated that in 1982 he realized he was not a "post-studio" artist. 1 That conclusion caused him to move away from the conceptualist investigations that had become the focus of his art by the later 1970s and for which work he had established a reputation. Partly out …

Felt Sensing Of Speech Acts In Written Genre Acquisition, Randall Popken

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

This paper theorizes about the experiential dimension of acquiring rhetorical genres—specifically the way developing writers rely on felt sensing when they encounter the "core" of genres: illocutionary speech acts.

The Inherent Limitations Doctrine: How The Specification May Inherently Limit The Scope Of The Claims, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 124 (2001), Adam G. Kelly Jan 2001

The Inherent Limitations Doctrine: How The Specification May Inherently Limit The Scope Of The Claims, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 124 (2001), Adam G. Kelly

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

In several recent decisions, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has established that a patentee’s express words, as disclosed in the specification, may be read into the claims to limit the scope of the invention. In addition, the Federal Circuit in Scimed and Bell Atlantic has held that not only may a patentee explicitly limit a claim term in the specification, but she may also do so “by implication.” Thus, a specification may inherently limit the scope of a claimed invention constituting what the author calls the “inherent limitations doctrine.” This new wrinkle in claim interpretation …

Crossing Ovah' : A Phenomenological Examination Of Healing In African Americans Of The Southeastern United States, Lalisa Alita Anderson

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

No Abstract submitted, substituted introduction: Researchers have examined healing from the perspective of the healer and they have explored the structure and function of healing systems (1,2,3,4). However there is a paucity of research that explores healing from the context of those who have experienced it (5). It has been noted that many mental disorders in the United States remain either untreated or poorly treated, especially in the African-American community (6). The 1999 Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health states that at present the United States mental health system is not equipped to meet the needs of racial and ethnic …
